The candidate will receive a scholarship of 1,200 € per month with an additional 150 € per month for material and travel expenses over a standard funding period of 3 years funded by the Faculty 09 - Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management. The candidate will join the Chair of Land Use Systems with focus on Agroforestry, Department of Landscape Ecology and Resources Management and will work in close collaboration with the externally funded DFG Research Unit 5664 "Agroforestry for sustainable multifunctional agriculture (FORMULA)".
FORMULA is part of a cooperation between Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in Muencheberg. The research unit investigates topics of soil carbon storage and trace gas emissions, water and nutrient fluxes, species diversity and functional biodiversity, agronomy, resource efficiency and crop stress in two alley cropping systems in Hesse and Brandenburg. The research focusses on the interactions along gradients between trees and crops.
Your tasks at a glance
• Implementation and maintenance of cosmic-ray neutron sensing equipment to understand field-scale impacts of agroforestry on soil moisture and water availability, mainly at the study site at Gladbacherhof (Hesse)
• Supervision and maintenance of a microclimate sensor networks at the agroforestry test sites at Gladbacherhof (Hesse).
• Analysis of large and complex datasets.
• Close cooperation with work on water and nutrient fluxes in FORMULA.
• Publication and presentation of project results in peer-reviewed international journals, at conferences and to the public.
Your qualifications and competences
• Completed scientific university degree in environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, ecology, geosciences or a related degree programme.
• Creativity and interest in developing and implementing your own scientific approaches.
• Strong technical and analytical skills in field experiments. Ability to organise work processes.

We have an opening for a fully funded PhD position in the Catchment and Eco-hydrology group at LIST. The candidate will work on combining long experimental datasets with machine learning techniques to identify deficiencies in current hydrological models.
This PhD position is part of the JCAR ATRACE project. The candidate will join a community of PhD students from multiple institutions, collaborating to reduce flood and drought risk in Central Europe.

The newly established Actionable & Computational Terrestrial Hydrology Lab (a.c.t. hydro lab, led by Dr. Yifan Cheng) at the Department of Geology at the State University of New York at Buffalo is excited to invite applications for multiple motivated students pursuing Ph.D. or M.S. degrees in Geological Sciences, specializing in computational hydrology. In a.c.t. hydro lab, we develop novel numerical modeling methods to better assess the resilience of water-related sectors under climate change, with a special interest in cold regions. We collaborate with social scientists, experts from water-related sectors such as power, ecosystems, as well as local communities to enhance the salience, tangibility, and usability of our data and model products. Basic qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Earth and Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Experience in coding (e.g., Python, Fortran, C++) and data analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred qualifications
A Master’s degree in related field
Experience with physically based hydrologic models
Enthusiasm for actionable science and interdisciplinary research involving experts from hydrology and broad water-related sectors
Proficiency in programming languages and prior research experience in the relevant fields is highly desirable
