Following her advice, I've bought:
> 2 identical smartphones
> 2 identical burner phones
I leave 1 smartphone & burner phone at another address.

My contacts list is synced using Nextcloud. That way both smartphones will sync contacts when they are switched on; no need to write anything down.

I've used KeePass password manager for years. I have it installed on both smartphones and my laptop to make sure I always have access to my accounts. The database file is again synced using Nextcloud. If I loose one or two devices, all I have to do is switch on another and I will have access to all my passwords.

For 2FA I use andOTP; you can use the same secret code on both smartphones.

I use the burner phones when I need to give a number but don't want to use mine.

Ironically, Google devices are some of the most private & secure IF you install a custom operating system. I use CalyxOS, it wasn't too hard using their new installer & guide.

I've been very impressed by it.
It's pretty much the same as stock Android but with all the crap taken out, permissions & settings that actually work and a lot of good stuff pre-installed. You end up with all the stuff you want from an Android phone; alternative app stores, privacy browsers, encrypted messengers, without any Google Services at all.

I've had zero issues and even though it's running on a relatively old phone, it's the fastest thing I've used.

It's encrypted as standard, I particularly like the words on the default lock screen. A clear gel case from a Chinaman with a Grandma Towlers sticker under it is de rigueur, see photo above 😁.

The SIM only plans are only a few quid and they refund you for what you don't use; not very jewish I'm sure you'll agree.

For the second smartphone use whatever you like.

For the two burner phones you can pick up free pay as you go SIM cards from corner shops, supermarkets, Cex, all sorts of places.
Because we are using 2G phones, I recommend O2 because they are the only one which still operates on both the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands, a big advantage for getting signal.
They also come in handy on trips when your regular smartphone has no signal.

CAUTION: peer-to-peer communications reveal one's IP address to each other, so using a reliable VPN, proxy, or TOR is advised. Briar is an exception to this rule, as it uses either Bluetooth range or the local network it's connected to; else all traffic goes through TOR. Ones without servers are ideal, such as: Jami, Tox, Ricochet, Status, Scuttlebot, ȱ, and PSYC-2. Some are still in development and may be prone to bugs.

Keep these options in mind when communicating with your clique. Many of us belong to private groups on Telegram which are presumably free from moderator surveillance (or at least interference), but ultimately we should transition to a more durable platform that will be unable to censor our messages. Try a few out and see what works for you and your crew.
