Like most personality disorders, many factors may contribute to the development of symptoms in borderline personality disorder. Because the symptoms are long-lasting, the idea that symptoms begin to emerge in childhood or at least adolescence is well accepted. However, the negative consequences of such symptoms may not show themselves until adulthood.
Symptoms are often present in adolescence and almost always by young adulthood. There may be a history of unstable relationships in the person's life and a higher-than-average likelihood of sexual abuse, family violence, and neglect in the person's childhood. This disorder is diagnosed much more frequently in females.

Practitioners of reality therapy acknowledge the influence of heredity and environment on humankind, but they reject the deterministic view of man as a helpless victim of these factors. Instead, reality therapy holds to an existential view of humankind which makes each individual responsible for his own diction and behavior. Glasser agreeing with Maslow (1971), believes that we have two primary needs above and beyond survival. These are the needs to give and receive love and to feel worthwhile. Generally, the two needs seem to run well together.
With responsibility defined as the ability to fill one's needs without infringing on the rights of others, or without depriving others of the opportunity to fill theirs, the responsible person becomes the mentally healthy person in the reality therapy system.

Biofeedback reduces the stress response and brings stability and calmness to the nervous system. It's very effective for migraines. Studies have shown that biofeedback can be just as effective as some of the preventive medications we use. About 85 percent to 90 percent of patients with chronic headaches respond positively to biofeedback. Biofeedback also serves as an excellent bridge in assisting patients wean off medications.

A wide variety of stimuli can produce pain- the sensation of discomfort or suffering. Virtually any external stimulus that can produce tissue damage can cause pain, including certain chemicals, electric shock and extreme heat, cold, pressure or noise. Pain can also be caused by internal stimuli, such as disease, infection or deterioration of body functions.
Pain begins when an intense stimulus activates small-diameter sensory fibers, called free nerve endings, in the skin, muscles, or internal organs. The free nerve endings carry their messages to the spinal cord, releasing a neurotransmitter called substance P. In the spinal cord, substance P causes other neurons to become activated, sending their messages through open spinal gates to the thalamus in the brain.
