According to reports, the deal would involve a 60-day truce and the release of 10 Israeli captives

Hamas said on Monday that it had accepted a Gaza ceasefire proposal presented by mediators Qatar and Egypt, which comes as Israel is planning a massive escalation that involves forcibly displacing more than one million Palestinians from Gaza City and sending them south.

“Hamas, along with the Palestinian factions, relayed their acceptance of the proposal put forward yesterday by the Qatari and Egyptian mediators,” Hamas said in a statement, according to Al Jazeera .

According to an Arab diplomat speaking to The Times of Israel , the deal would involve the release of 10 living Israeli captives and a 60-day truce, during which the two sides would be expected to engage in negotiations for a long-term ceasefire.

The Times report said that Israel has received the proposal, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to dismiss the news and signaled he still planned to go ahead with the escalation in Gaza City.

Other Israeli officials outright rejected the idea of a deal with Hamas. “We fight only to win, and under no circumstances to stop halfway with a partial deal that abandons half of the hostages and could lead to ending the war in defeat,” said Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

Trump Says Israeli Captives To Be Released ‘Only After Hamas’s Defeat’

The US president’s statement comes as Israel is preparing to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza City ahead of its upcoming occupation

US President Donald Trump said on 18 August that Israeli captives will only be released once Hamas is “destroyed,” openly backing Israel’s plan to occupy Gaza City.

His comments come despite widespread internal concern in Israel over the fate of the captives and the threat posed to them by Tel Aviv’s upcoming assault.

“We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed!!! The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be,” the president said on his Truth Social platform.

“Remember, I was the one who negotiated and got hundreds of hostages freed and released into Israel (and America!),” Trump added, inflating the numbers of a previous exchange deal which saw 30 captives released.

“I was the one who ended 6 wars, in just 6 months. I was the one who OBLITERATED Iran’s Nuclear facilities. Play to WIN, or don’t play at all! Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT,” he went on to write.

Tom Barrack visited Beirut on Monday for talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun

US envoy Tom Barrack said on 18 August during his visit to Beirut that Israel should comply with the terms of the ceasefire that ended its war against Lebanon, now that the Lebanese government has agreed to begin the process of disarming Hezbollah.

“I think the Lebanese government has done their part. They've taken the first step. Now what we need is Israel to comply with that equal handshake,” Barrack said following a meeting .. with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Barrack claimed that the delegation, which included Deputy US Envoy Morgan Ortagus, carried “no threats regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah,” which was a “sovereign decision for the Lebanese state.”

“There is cooperation from all sides. We are not here to intimidate anyone. The positive outcomes will benefit Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Israel alike. Our focus is on future prosperity, not fear.”

Earlier this month, the Lebanese government agreed to a phased roadmap for Hezbollah to give up its weapons.

Israeli FM Urges Washington To Reject Extension Of UNIFIL Mandate: Report

Gideon Saar wrote a letter to Marco Rubio arguing that the UN interim force ‘failed’ its mission in Lebanon and must be ‘disbanded’

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar requested from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the mandate of UNIFIL activities in south Lebanon be terminated, according to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.

Saar sent a letter to his US counterpart arguing that the UN interim force “has failed its core mission – to prevent Hezbollah's entrenchment south of the Litani River – as evidenced by the recent war.”

“The force was intended to be temporary from the outset and has failed,” Saar said, according to the report.

“Saar emphasized that Israel seeks an immediate end to UNIFIL's mandate. As an alternative, he suggested a temporary extension of six months to one year to allow for a proper disbanding, enabling the Lebanese Armed Forces to redeploy in southern Lebanon and UNIFIL to evacuate its positions in an orderly way,” Israel Hayom wrote.

“During this interim period, UNIFIL's activities would focus on specific tasks, such as clearing explosives and mines, training the Lebanese army, and organizing the withdrawal of its forces. Saar further noted that the recent war and Hezbollah's significant weakening present a historic opportunity to achieve two goals: disarming Hezbollah and supporting the Lebanese army in asserting full sovereignty over its territory.”
