Zelensky Ramps Up Pressure On White House To Green Light Long-Range Strikes Inside Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is insisting that US President Joe Biden give Kiev approval to hit targets deep inside Russia. The move would be a major escalation in Washington’s proxy war against Moscow in Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Zelensky has pushed President Biden to increase the range of US weapons sent to Ukraine and to lift restrictions on where those weapons can be used.

Now that Zelesnky has received long-range missiles and F-16s from the West, he wants Washington’s permission to strike targets in Russia far from the border. “We talk about this every day with our partners. We persuade. We present arguments,” he said during his nightly address on Saturday.

“We need the capabilities to truly and fully protect Ukraine and Ukrainians.” Zelensky continued, “We need both the permissions for long-range capabilities and your long-range shells and missiles.”

Former Pro-Censorship White House Official, Now Harris Deputy Manager, Aggressively Targets Online “Misinformation”

Rob Flaherty – Kamala Harris campaign’s deputy manager (originally a member of the team put together for the now failed Biden reelection bid) – has spoken about what that campaign is doing about “misinformation.”

That’s one of the favorite subjects – and often tools of political pressure – of the current Biden-Harris administration, and Flaherty is no stranger to any of it.

In the past, he served in the Biden administration as director of digital strategy and played a prominent role in exerting persistent pressure on Big Tech , to get these companies to censor even more content.

Now, Flaherty tells Politico that the Harris campaign’s handling of what it perceives as misinformation is “extremely aggressive” and that it is “constantly” on the lookout for it, “monitoring” the internet – again, “aggressively.”

The reason is to counter “the attacks that are coming in against the Vice President.”

That includes what Flaherty calls “deep detection of what is happening on the internet” on election day. The apparent intent is to come across as aggressive, perhaps as an intimidation tactic.

Flaherty’s other statements, such as hunting down “pockets of misinformation” (like posts that mention the wrong election date) along with threats of lawsuit speak to that.

According to him, the campaign has “a really robust legal team” that is considering its options regarding “voting misinformation” – and Flaherty says these options are many.

Regarding the channels the Harris campaign goes to, to implement “misinformation monitoring and pushing back” one is as expected – the presidential candidate’s own campaign accounts, but the other is quite controversial, yet clearly spelled out by Flaherty – traditional media.

“That’s all part of one big strategy,” the Harris aide shared.

Israeli officials also blasted London for the suspension, calling the move 'shameful'

Amnesty International UK has called London's decision to suspend 30 out of 350 active arms export licenses to Israel “gesture politics," calling the decision “too limited and riddled with loopholes.”

“The decision means that while ministers apparently accept that Israel may be committing war crimes in Gaza, [the government] is nevertheless continuing to risk complicity in war crimes, apartheid – and possible genocide – by Israeli forces in Gaza,” the organization's Chief Executive, Sacha Deshmukh, said on 3 September.

Trump’s Former Envoy To Israel: US Should Fund Israeli Annexation Of West Bank - News From Antiwar.com

Former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has called for the US to fund the Israeli annexation of the West Bank in a book that was released on Tuesday, which is noscriptd One Jewish State: The Last, Best Hope to Resolve the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict .

Friedman, who was ambassador from 2017 to 2021, wrote in the book that Israel needs financial assistance “to assert and maintain its sovereignty over Judea and Samaria,” using the biblical name for the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

He suggested the next Republican administration could work with Congress to redirect $1 billion meant to provide aid to Palestinians. “The easiest bucket to tap into and reposition is that of the United States,” he wrote.

While he was in office, Trump unveiled a so-called “peace plan” that would have seen Israel annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, a long, narrow valley along the West Bank’s border with Jordan. The proposal was dead on arrival since it was a non-starter for the Palestinians.

Miriam Adelson, the wife of the late billionaire Sheldon Adelson, has reportedly pledged $100 million to spend on Trump’s 2024 campaign, and she is expected to press him to support the Israeli annexation of the West Bank.

Friedman’s book was released one week after Israel launched its largest attack on the West Bank since 2002. Israeli officials say the operation will escalate and that the territory is being treated as the second most critical front, immediately after Gaza.

Times of Israel — Report: PMO Rejects Freedom of Information Request for Relevant IDF Intel Documents Ahead of Hamas Attack

The Prime Minister’s Office has rejected a freedom of information request for all or any documents that Benjamin Netanyahu received from the IDF Intelligence Branch in 2023 warning ahead of October 7 of the possibility of an attack by Hamas, Channel 12 news reports.

It says the IDF has stated that four “warning letters” were sent, but that the PMO has denied that it received any warning about a possible attack by Hamas from Gaza, and that all the Intelligence Branch documents it received prior to the invasion and slaughter assessed that Hamas was deterred from attacking.

The request for the material was made in a June 16 letter sent to the IDF and the PMO by the Movement for Freedom of Information and the Hatzlacha Movement for the Promotion of a Fair Society. After some back and forth, the PMO replied with a final rejection two days ago, the report says.

The initial request asked for “all the documents, interactions, assessments and briefings sent to the PM and his representatives in the course of 2023 regarding the dangers, risks and possible implications stemming from social processes, and their connection to the likelihood of war or a deteriorating security situation regarding any element, including Hamas,” the report says.

After the PMO said it had received no such warnings, the two movements suggested that the PMO make public all the IDF intel material it received referencing Gaza, after it is approved by the military censor to make sure there is no harm to national security.

In response, the PMO said it had consulted with Netanyahu, and it had been decided that the documents could not be published in light of their “security classification” and ongoing “sensitivity.”

The PMO also said there was only a single one-on-one meeting between Netanyahu and then-IDF intelligence chief Aharon Haliva in 2023, the report says.

Haliva announced his resignation in April, taking personal responsibility for the failure to prevent the October 7 Hamas invasion and massacre, and stood down in August.

Brazil’s High-Stakes Battle Over X Fuels International Backlash, Rights Groups Press For Legal Action

X users in Brazil, and the company itself, are receiving support from several legal and rights advocacy groups, including the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International, which has turned to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

The latter has authority over Brazil under the American Convention on Human Rights (ACHR). These developments come in the wake of Brazilian authorities’ decision to first ban X in that country, and then start fining those who use VPN to circumvent the ban.

According to ADF, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court and Superior Electoral Court have engaged in censorship that runs afoul of international law.

IACHR, a tribunal of the Organization of American States (OAS), is being asked to intervene on behalf of those now censored and fined in Brazil.

Brazil’s own Bar Association wrote to the Supreme Court to say that “a daily fine to individuals and legal entities in a broad and generalized manner represents a serious affront to the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.”

X owner Elon Musk, whose company has been engaged in an ever-escalating and more serious clash with those currently in power in Brazil over free speech, has welcomed the initiative.

This decision follows backlash after a secret meeting between the external affairs secretary and an Israeli diplomat

The Scottish government announced on 19 August that it was halting meetings with the Israeli government until significant "progress" is made in negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

This decision follows demands for the suspension of Scotland's external affairs secretary Angus Robertson after it was revealed that he met privately with Daniela Grudsky Ekstein, Israel's deputy ambassador to the UK.

Robertson later apologized for the meeting, saying that it was kept confidential at Israel's request.

The Scottish minister also committed to the decision that the government would decline any future Israeli invitations until it “cooperates fully with its international obligations on the investigation of genocide and war crimes.”

Robertson also mentioned that he initially agreed to a meeting with Israeli diplomats to emphasize Scotland's stance in favor of implementing a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The conversation, however, was not "strictly limited" to that topic, according to him.

‘Jenin Is Just The Beginning’: Israel Planning More Escalations In West Bank

Israel Hayom reports the West Bank has become the second most critical front

Israel is planning more significant escalations in the West Bank, and the Israeli military now considers the occupied territory the second most critical front, immediately after Gaza, Israel Hayom reported on Tuesday.

Israeli security officials told the outlet that while the directive for the West Bank is in its initial stages and that changes on the ground will take time, a new series of operations across the territory are imminent.

Last week, Israel launched its largest attack on the West Bank since 2002, with raids focused on Jenin and Tulkarm in the north. “The Jenin operation is just the beginning,” a security official told Israel Hayom .

The Israeli assault on Jenin continued for the seventh day on Tuesday as the city remains under siege. According to the Jenin municipality, the Israeli military has destroyed 70% of the roads and infrastructure in the city , and about 80% of the water has been cut off to residents.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 30 Palestinians have been killed and 130 others were injured in the West Bank since Israel launched the assault last week. The total deaths include six children and two elderly people. Since October 7, 680 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank.

‘UN Building Should Be Wiped Off The Face Of The Earth’: Outgoing Israeli Envoy — Aug 21st

The official has made headlines over the past year over his continuous attacks against the UN and other organizations that condemn the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza

Outgoing Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, on 20 August said that the UN main building in New York “should be closed and wiped off the face of the earth” and replaced with “a new body that truly represents noble values.”

“This building, which may look nice from the outside, is actually twisted and distorted,” Erdan added.

Erdan finished his tenure as Israel’s UN envoy on Monday, when his successor, Danny Ben Yosef Danon, took over. The controversial Israeli official has made headlines several times over the past year for his attacks on the UN and his attempts to disrupt sessions.

In November, the Israel envoy drew the ire of China’s UN envoy Zhang Jun after accusing UN officials and agencies of referring to Israeli victims as “mere footnotes.”

“Where was UN Women’s outrage at Hamas treating women like property and using them as human shields? Why is it that only now you have decided to talk about the women and children of Gaza?” Erdan said.

From Brexit To Trump: Brazil’s Uses Rise Of Populism To Justify X Ban

Yesterday’s order by Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes to halt the operations of the social media platform X has ignited international debate over free speech and governmental overreach. The order, which spans over 50 pages, cites concerns over the platform’s role in spreading what it deems anti-democratic speech and “misinformation” ahead of Brazil’s 2024 elections. US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Brendan Carr has voiced significant concerns over this move, describing it as a “broader blow against free speech.”

In his detailed ruling, Moraes explicitly references global political events such as Brexit and the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, describing them as “types of extreme ‘populist’ outcomes” that his decision aims to prevent. This linkage is critical to understanding the sweeping nature of the order, as Carr points out, “His opinion does not even try to hide it. He comes right out and points to Brexit and the 2016 election of President Trump as examples, in his telling, of the types of extreme ‘populist’ outcomes that he is attempting to avoid.”

Carr argues that such explicit connections to international political events signify an attempt to control political discourse in Brazil, a stance he describes as “Orwellian” and “dangerous.” The Commissioner stressed, “The opposite is true. Free speech is democracy’s check on excessive government control. Censorship is the authoritarian’s dream.”

Moraes defends the shutdown by labeling the free speech on X as “harmful” and “manipulative,” which could potentially influence the upcoming elections. He stated in the order, “diversity of political opinions expressed on the site might influence the people of Brazil ahead of their 2024 elections.” This assertion is part of what Carr criticizes as a “warmed over playbook of labeling political speech that runs contrary to his own orthodoxy as ‘misinformation’ and ‘disinformation.’”

The decision has been controversial within Brazil as well, with several legal experts pointing out that it potentially conflicts with the Brazilian Constitution, which expressly prohibits censorship of a political or ideological nature. Yet, de Moraes contends that the urgent nature of the situation requires stringent measures, as highlighted in his decision: “[The platform] has been used to coordinate actions against Brazilian democratic institutions.”
