"Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico warned on Monday that some NATO and EU countries are considering sending troops to Ukraine, a step that would risk direct war between NATO and Russia.
“Several NATO and EU member states are considering sending their soldiers to Ukraine on a bilateral basis,” said Fico, who was elected last year on a platform of opposing the proxy war in Ukraine.
Some NATO members have signed bilateral security deals with Ukraine, including Germany and the UK, but there’s no indication they’re considering sending troops at this time."

"French President Macron hosted over 20 fellow European leaders in Paris on Monday to discuss their next moves in Ukraine, including the possibility of a conventional NATO intervention, which he said they hadn’t ruled out for reasons of “strategic ambiguity” despite not reaching a consensus on this. His Polish counterpart Duda also confirmed that this subject was the most heated part of their discussions. The very fact that this scenario is being officially considered shows how desperate NATO has become.
Russia’s victory in Avdeevka, which was the natural result of it winning the “race of logistics”/“war of attrition” with NATO, prompted policymakers to contemplate what they’ll do in the event that it achieves a breakthrough across the Line of Contact (LOC) and starts steamrolling through the rest of Ukraine. They hadn’t previously considered this to be a serious possibility until last summer’s failed counteroffensive exposed the weakness of their military-industrial complex and tactical-strategic planning.
It's now a credible scenario that’s reviving speculation about a Polish-led intervention aimed at drawing a red line in the sand for halting any potential Russian breakthrough before it gets too far. This would preserve the G7’s “sphere of (economic) influence” in Ukraine while preventing that former Soviet Republic’s collapse and thus averting another Afghan-like foreign policy disaster for the West. The problem, however, is that Poland also doesn’t want to be put up to this only to be hung out to dry."

"French President Emmanuel Macron's words at the start of the week which opened the door to European 'boots on the ground in Ukraine' elicited shock, dismay and caution even from within the Western allies. NATO itself scrambled to assure the world that it has no plans to deploy troops inside Ukraine, with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg rejecting the idea in remarks, given it would certainly mean automatic WW3.
According to CNN, "Macron had told reporters at a news conference that while he and the other 21 European leaders present did not agree on deploying military personnel, the prospect was discussed openly." Even typically hawkish countries Poland and the UK distanced themselves from such a possibility.
However one tiny NATO country did step up to back Macron's words. The Netherlands has said it won't rule out sending Western troops to Ukraine. Dutch Chief of Defense, General Onno Eichelsheim, told an Amsterdam-based news outlet that while it's a possibility it is "not yet opportune" to do so."I think you should keep all options open to see how you can best support Ukraine," Eichelsheim said.
According to more from the Dutch interview:
Ukraine has not asked the Netherlands to send troops and there is no point in discussing it at the moment, Eichelsheim added. If Western militaries were to go to Ukraine, it would have to be in a coalition, the Dutch military chef said. "This could either happen via NATO or via an alliance of 10-15 countries."

Putin threatens nuclear response to NATO troops if they go to Ukraine
"Vladimir Putin’s forces have rehearsed using tactical nuclear weapons at an early stage of conflict with a major world power, according to leaked Russian military files that include training scenarios for an invasion by China.
The classified papers, seen by the Financial Times, describe a threshold for using tactical nuclear weapons that is lower than Russia has ever publicly admitted, according to experts who reviewed and verified the documents.
The cache consists of 29 secret Russian military files drawn up between 2008 and 2014, including scenarios for war-gaming and presentations for naval officers, which discuss operating principles for the use of nuclear weapons.
Criteria for a potential nuclear response range from an enemy incursion on Russian territory to more specific triggers, such as the destruction of 20 per cent of Russia’s strategic ballistic missile submarines.
“This is the first time that we have seen documents like this reported in the public domain,” said Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin. “They show that the operational threshold for using nuclear weapons is pretty low if the desired result can’t be achieved through conventional means.”

"Russia has started diverting its LNG cargoes away from the Suez Canal and is using the longer route to China via the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, amid a higher risk of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters on Wednesday.
The longer route from Russia’s Yamal LNG project to China via Africa instead of the Suez Canal adds around 10 days to the travel time for LNG cargoes to reach their destinations in China and return to Russia, tying up more LNG tankers for longer periods at sea.
This adds to recent struggles of Russia’s top LNG exporter, Novatek, which has yet to begin shipments from its new export project, Arctic 2 LNG, due to a lack of ships amid tightened U.S. sanctions on the project."

"China remains the biggest challenge to the international trading system, the Office of the US Trade Representative said in its annual report to the US Congress on China’s WTO compliance released on Friday.
“It has been 22 years since China acceded to the WTO, and China still embraces a state-directed, nonmarket approach to the economy and trade, which runs counter to the norms and principles embodied by the WTO,” a release from the office quoted US Trade Representative Katherine Tai (戴琪) as saying.
“Even more problematic, China’s approach targets industries for global market domination by Chinese companies using an array of constantly evolving nonmarket policies and practices,” Tai said.
“This report details the breadth and scale of China’s nonmarket policies and practices and the serious harm that they cause to workers, businesses and industries in the United States and around the world,” she added. “It is a stark reminder that the members of the international trading system must continue to work together to defend our shared interests against these many harmful policies and practices, particularly in sectors targeted by China’s industrial plans.”
China’s “socialist market economy,” which it was pursuing when it joined the WTO in 2001, “has turned decidedly predatory,” the report says."

"When Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) in 2022 unveiled plans to begin building a new chip fabrication facility in Japan and start production this year, it looked like an implausibly aggressive schedule. Chip plants often take three years to complete, and, although the firm had moved faster on its own turf, this would be its first such attempt in Japan — where it would have to navigate foreign bureaucracies and regulations.
However, on Saturday, TSMC officially opened its Kumamoto fab, putting it on track to begin mass production later this year. The ribbon cutting marks an early victory for Japan as governments worldwide race to establish domestic chip capabilities in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic-era disruptions and growing geopolitical tensions. While the US has also courted TSMC — the leading producer of the most advanced chips — the firm has already pushed back start dates for both of its planned Arizona facilities after clashes with labor unions and delays in subsidy allocations.
The success in Japan stems from a combination of factors not easily repeated elsewhere: efficient government support, strict construction timetables and a low-cost workforce that flocked to the site and then labored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Smoothing the entire effort was a deep partnership with local champion Sony Group Corp, an investor in and customer for the chip factory."

Today the Russian Armed Forces carried out combined strikes on the so-called rear targets. Ukraine: in Konstantinovka, the blow fell on the temporary deployment points of engineer-sapper and mechanized units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In the Sumy region, the Zarutsky Lime Plant was hit.
In the special military operation zone, Russian units continue to hold the initiative in several directions. According to some reports, Russian troops have practically taken full control of Krasnoye (Ivanovskoye) near Bakhmut. Fighting continues on the outskirts of the village.
To the west of Avdeevka, fighting continues on the northern outskirts of Orlovka. At the same time, the Russian Armed Forces are firing at the enemy’s forward positions in the Semyonovka area, from where the Ukrainian Armed Forces regularly carry out counterattacks on Berdychi and Orlovka.
In the Zaporozhye direction, local advances of Russian units were recorded. In the area of Verbovoy and Novoprokopovka, the zone of control in forest plantations has been slightly expanded, and to the west of Rabotino, the RF Armed Forces are consolidating the achieved boundaries.
In the Kherson sector, the enemy continues to hold a bridgehead in Krynki. The activity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is noted on the islands in the Dnieper delta north of Krynki and Cossack Camps.
In the evening, the enemy once again hit the Russian airfields Belbek and Gvardeyskoye on the Crimean Peninsula with cruise missiles; there was no serious damage. The Ukrainian Armed Forces also fired at the Tendra Spit, but did not reach their target.
