An investigative report published on 1 February, 2024 by Access Now reveals that The Cradle Media’s name was used by malign actors on Whatsapp to infect the mobile devices of Jordanian “journalists, political activists, civil society actors, and human rights lawyers” with Israel’s Pegasus spyware.
The report specifically cites one attempt to infiltrate the device of prominent Palestinian-American journalist Daoud Kuttab by utilizing The Cradle’s name:
“The Citizen Lab’s forensic analysis also uncovered seven other attempts to infect Kuttab’s mobile device with Pegasus between April and August 2023. One of these was a sophisticated social engineering attack launched in July 2023, where the attacker impersonated a journalist from media outlet The Cradle inquiring about Jordan’s new cybercrime law while sending several malicious links.”
We believe this method was used on Jordanian politicians as well. In early December, The Cradle Arabic’s editor was contacted by the office of a prominent Lebanese official, asking if we were the employers of a woman, claiming to be a Cradle journalist, who had reached out for an interview with a Jordanian member of parliament via Whatsapp. Upon learning that The Cradle was a Beirut-based publication, the Jordanian politician reached out to his Lebanese colleague to verify her employment with us. Needless to say, we did not know the woman and relayed that message back, accordingly.
Upon further investigation, the Whatsapp photo of the impersonator was discovered to be lifted from a rather beautiful Greek travel agent’s Instagram account.
It is disturbing that journalists and journalism continue to be used by state intelligence agencies to conduct espionage on citizens. We would like to take this opportunity to clarify that The Cradle has no connection to any of the above malign activities, and will seek legal recourse when and if required to absolve our journalist-driven, independent publication from association with such schemes.

The Prisoners' and Ex-Prisoners' Affairs Commission reported on Thursday morning that 21-year-old cancer-stricken prisoner Asif Al-Rifai has suffered from a series of negative effects to his health condition in the prisons of the occupation, which are witnessing unprecedented punitive and arbitrary measures. In November, it was reported that Asif's condition had signficantly worsened due to the occupation's medical negligence.
The Commission said that the situation is "affecting all prisoners, male and female, where the prison administration has exploited all external circumstances to create a dangerous living and health reality, resulting in a cost paid from the lives, bodies, and souls of our fighters inside prisons and detention centers."
Prisoner Al-Rifai, a living witness to the extent of this occupation's criminality and hatred, is subjected to real medical neglect. Despite the spread of diseases in his body and his suffering from pain and problems in the liver, glands, and intestines, he is treated with negligence and not provided with the necessary treatments and medications that could help him overcome his disease. The outbreak of the war four months ago was an excuse for the occupation to leave him prey to his disease and pain.
Asif is not receiving chemotherapy, due to his body's weakness and inability to endure it, noting that he had undergone more than 20 chemotherapy sessions previously. Al-Rifai also suffers from a kidney problem that required the placement of an external urine bag connected to the kidney to assist him in relieving himself.
The Commission demands immediate intervention from human rights and humanitarian institutions and the World Health Organization to stop this unethical and inhumane crime and to provide treatments, medications, and food for all sick prisoners, whose conditions have become in real danger.
