"The acts of a subordinate done in compliance with an unlawful order given by a superior are generally excused unless the superior’s order is one that a person of ordinary sense and understanding would, under the circumstances, know to be unlawful or if the order in question is actually known to the accused to be unlawful."
"...subordinates must refuse to comply with clearly illegal orders to commit violations to the law of war."
In the recent leaked call with Iran, John Kerry discussed secret Israeli military operations with Iran's foreign minister when he served as President Obama's Secretary of State [subordinate].
Furthermore, he went to speak to them during Trump's presidency, behind his back, to make deals against him.
Kerry is of "ordinary sense" and violated the Law of War. He knew it was morally wrong to do so.
