You know it's funny, traditional Marxist analysis makes a pointed distinction between base (material conditions) and superstructure, (social/cultural conditions) but as capitalism goes on, the distinction fades. The term "consumer culture" is often thrown around. The idea that consumption comes to co-opt cultural concepts is an interesting one, if somewhat obvious.
