You know it's funny, traditional Marxist analysis makes a pointed distinction between base (material conditions) and superstructure, (social/cultural conditions) but as capitalism goes on, the distinction fades. The term "consumer culture" is often thrown around. The idea that consumption comes to co-opt cultural concepts is an interesting one, if somewhat obvious.

TIL in 1763 the Paxton Boys massacred two villages of Susquehannock Indians. The militia proceeded to march on Philadelphia with the intention of killing every Indian in Pennsylvania. They were met by Benjamin Franklin who helped prevent further slaughter of the peaceful Native Americans
