Arqueólogos israelenses descobriram, pela primeira vez, uma inscrição assíria de cerca de 2.700 anos nas proximidades do Monte do Templo/Esplanada das Mesquitas, em Jerusalém. Gravada em um fragmento de cerâmica de 2,5 centímetros, a escrita em cuneiforme acádio menciona o atraso no pagamento de tributos, a data do primeiro dia do mês de Av e o título de um oficial real da Assíria conhecido como “o que segura as rédeas”. A análise do material indicou que a argila veio da região do rio Tigre, local de importantes centros do antigo império.

Segundo especialistas da Autoridade de Antiguidades de Israel, o artefato provavelmente fazia parte de um aviso de cobrança de impostos enviado pelo imperador assírio ao rei de Judá, em um contexto que reflete o relato bíblico do livro de Reis, quando o rei Ezequias atrasou o pagamento de tributos e provocou a ofensiva de Senaqueribe contra Jerusalém. O achado confirma, segundo os pesquisadores, que Judá havia se tornado um reino vassalo da Assíria após a destruição do vizinho Reino de Israel.

A inscrição foi encontrada em escavações realizadas no Parque Arqueológico Davidson, ao lado do Muro das Lamentações, em um edifício administrativo da época do Primeiro Templo. Para os arqueólogos, o fragmento representa uma conexão direta entre o povo de Israel e o antigo Oriente Médio, oferecendo uma das evidências mais concretas já descobertas das relações políticas e econômicas entre Jerusalém e o império assírio.
