Hoje (27), completam-se sete anos do massacre na Sinagoga Tree of Life, em Pittsburgh, um dos ataques mais letais contra judeus na história dos Estados Unidos. Na ocasião, o supremacista branco e antissemita Robert D. Bowers invadiu o templo durante o Shabat, assassinando 11 pessoas e ferindo outras seis.

Bowers atirou por vários minutos e, ao tentar fugir, foi confrontado por policiais. Após troca de tiros, refugiou-se no terceiro andar e se rendeu pouco depois.

Esse foi o ataque antissemita mais letal da história dos EUA e marcou profundamente a comunidade judaica de Pittsburgh e o bairro de Squirrel Hill, símbolo da vida religiosa e cultural judaica na cidade. Sete anos depois, enquanto o antissemitismo continua a crescer em todo o mundo, o ocorrido é lembrete de que devemos permanecer unidos em condenar, de forma inequívoca e universal, o ódio aos judeus.

For the Tzarfati family, the nightmare that began on October 7, 2023, continues.
Their son Ofir went to a music festival in southern Israel to dance, to celebrate life… and was kidnapped by Hamas into Gaza and murdered in captivity.
They have already stood at his grave twice, mourning and burying the remains returned from Gaza in separate incidents.

Hoje (28) completam-se 60 anos da adoção da declaração Nostra Aetate pelo Vaticano. O documento é um marco nas relações entre judeus e cristãos, sobretudo após o Holocausto, ao refutar o mito antissemita de que os judeus seriam coletivamente responsáveis pela morte de Jesus.

Apesar disso, infelizmente, nos últimos dias — sobretudo após o massacre de 7 de outubro de 2023 — tem-se observado um ressurgimento de casos de antissemitismo cristão baseados nessa mesma ideia já rebatida pela Igreja Católica e por muitos teólogos cristãos. @igorhsabino

Nesta quarta-feira (29), durante sua audiência semanal no Vaticano, o Papa Leão XIV condenou publicamente o antissemitismo, repudiando tais perseguições “em qualquer época e contra qualquer pessoa”. O pontífice relembrou a posição oficial do Vaticano de repudiar o antissemitismo ao celebrar o 60º aniversário da "Nostra Aetate", um documento histórico que revolucionou as relações da Igreja Católica com as religiões não cristãs, assinado em 28 de outubro de 1965.

Nesse sentido, desde a declaração de 1965, a Igreja Católica não só condena o antissemitismo em todas as suas formas como também repudia a acusação de "deicídio", que culpa os judeus, como povo, pela morte de Jesus Cristo. Acusação essa que, ao longo dos séculos, alimentou e justificou diversas formas de perseguição contra os judeus, inclusive o Holocausto.

Em seu discurso, o Papa destacou ainda que seu posicionamento tem uma perspectiva bíblica: “E eu também confirmo que a Igreja não tolera o antissemitismo e luta contra ele, com base no próprio Evangelho”. A mensagem do líder católico foi recebida como um gesto importante diante do aumento global de ataques antissemitas desde o massacre do Hamas no sul de Israel em 7 de outubro de 2023.

A University of Washington student group is holding an off-campus lecture describing the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre in southern Israel a victory for the pro-Palestinian movement.
This is not political debate, it is public celebration of a massacre and a clear threat to Jewish students and faculty’s safety and dignity on campus.
