On April 14, 1931, a general strike began in Spain, which ended in victory for the communist and republican forces. Workers took over municipalities and ministries. The Revolutionary Committee announced the overthrow of the monarchy.
Spain was declared a republic. Alfonso XIII fled the country.
Despite the fierce resistance of the bourgeoisie and world imperialism, the Second Spanish Republic carried out a number of important transformations during the 8 years of its existence:
— Introduction of an eight-hour working day.
— Expanding the rights of workers and women (maternity leave, unemployment benefits, overtime pay, accident insurance).
- Confiscation of church and landowners' lands in favor of the poor peasantry.
— Construction of 10,000 new schools.
— Separation of religion from the state and schools.
The people of Spain have always shown fierce resistance to the fascist-Bourbon tyranny.
The struggle continues to this day - for the overthrow of the exploiters, for the country's exit from the NATO bloc, for the punishment of the fascist executioners!
¡No pasarán!

Ban the Atomic Bomb, Painting, Hans Grundig GDR, 1954
Grundig (1901 - 1958) was a German artist who joined the Communist Party in 1926. Under the Nazis he was arrested multiple times and ultimately was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp between 1940 - 44. Amazingly he survived.
After the war he became an art professor in the German Democratic Republic. This was one of his last major works.

138 years ago, on April 16, 1886, Ernst Thälmann was born - an outstanding figure of German Communism.
Born in Hamburg. From the age of 14 he worked as a packer, driver, port worker, loader in the harbor, then was a ship's cabin boy and a fireman's assistant. In 1903 he became a member of the Social Democratic Party and joined its left wing. Since 1912, he headed the Hamburg transport workers' union. During the First World War he served in the artillery. He conducted propaganda work among German soldiers, exposing the imperialist nature of the war.
At the end of 1918, having returned from the front, Thälmann immediately joined the revolutionary struggle of the Hamburg workers. In 1919, he was elected leader of the Hamburg organization of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD). In 1920, after the split of the USPD, the Hamburg organization led by Thälmann joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). In 1921 Thälmann was elected to the Central Committee of the KPD. In 1923, under his leadership, the Hamburg Uprising was carried out.
Since 1924, Thälmann was a member of the Politburo of the KPD Central Committee, and from 1925 - Chairman of the KPD Central Committee. In 1924, in the fight against the forces of fascist reaction, the advanced workers of Germany created the "Union of Red Front Soldiers.
After the establishment of Hitler's dictatorship, Thälmann continued to lead the underground struggle of the Communist Party, but in March 1933 he was captured by the Gestapo and imprisoned. A powerful movement arose in Germany and throughout the world for the release of Thälmann. The Nazis did not dare to put him on trial, fearing that Thälmann would use the trial to expose fascism and to propagate the ideas of communism. Neither torture nor 11 years of solitary confinement broke the fighting spirit of the leader of the German workers. In August 1944, Thälmann was transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he was executed on August 18, 1944, on the direct orders of Hitler.
