Ernst Thälmann went to his death 80 years ago, unbroken. Today, his words reach us from 1944, undimmed and admonishing:

"The history of our life is harsh, therefore it requires people who give themselves entirely to the cause... For to be a soldier of the revolution means to maintain unshakable loyalty to the cause, such loyalty that is proven by life and death, means to show unconditional reliability, confidence, courage and energy in the struggle in any situation.
Let the flame that overwhelms us, blazing in our hearts and illuminating our spirit, like a bright torch lead us across the battlefields of our lives.

Loyalty and firmness, strength of character and confidence in victory - these are the necessary qualities, and only they allow us to stand firm in the battle with fate and fulfill our revolutionary duty, the high historical mission entrusted to us and lead the cause to the final victory of genuine socialism."

Before the demonisation of the Soviet Union sullied communism in the mind of the masses, many people in Western capitalist countries stood against any attacks on the first worker-led socialist country.
