The beautiful Rose of the Desert. The Syrian First Lady Asma al-Assad.
This lovely account by Eva Bartlett of a wonderful woman who truly loves and is respected by her people.
The west seeks to remove President Bashar al-Assad and his wife from Syria in favour of a comprador regime to further their hegemony, but Syria has bravely fought back. In spite of sanctions and terrorist attacks they have remained steadfast.
Now with the strengthening of ties with China the Rose of the desert can bloom again.

Statues continue to be torn down across Ukraine as part of an attempt to eradicate Russian culture and identity, yet here in Donetsk they remain untouched.
Statues of Alexander Pushkin and Taras Shevchenko - symbols of Russian and Ukrainian national identity respectively - stand close together, as we can see in my tour across the city.

Don't sit in the kitchen at home
Go to the council elections
Previously, the worker was dark
And now the council decides matters"

The Federal Republic of Germany annexed the German Democratic Republic today 33 years ago. The capitalist takeover of the former state-owned businesses that had been a source of employment for many GDR citizens was an economic catastrophe for them.
The transition from a state that prioritized collective ownership to a neoliberal laboratory for West German capitalists came at the expense of the East German people. For many, their right to work as they had known it abruptly ceased to exist.
Over three decades later, the economic gap between East and West Germany continues to be a dividing line in the country, and, if anything, it is widening. The challenges posed by rising homelessness, a cost of living crisis, and stagnating wages in present-day Germany starkly contrast to the economic stability and guaranteed employment and housing that the citizens of the former GDR enjoyed.
