Since the end of the Second World War, the imperialists have relentlessly sought to conflate Comrade Stalin with Hitler — a crude attempt to equate fascism with socialism. Trump rambles away at the West Point cadets graduation about how the Russians stole US hypersonic missile designs. This is utter nonsense of course because even if the Russians did steal it, how come the US still can't produce such a missile to this day? The other problem with Trumps lie is that the Soviet Union started designing missiles capable of going above Mach 5 in the early 1970s. So this is all a sad, pathetic cope from Trump who has resorted to screaming "they stole it from us" as if he were some orange version of Gollum.

Today I spoke with Garland Nixon about why it is that so many people in the west cling to the idea that there is a path to a better life for the masses within the present economic order.

Why does the prejudice remain, despite all the evidence, that if only the right saviour can be identified, heading up the right political project, some kind of benevolent ‘capitalism with kinder characteristics’ will emerge?

We discussed the history of imperialism and socialism since the first world war; how the socialist camp was born and continues to be the only force capable of defeating fascism and imperialism.

And we talked about how, with Nato taking a beating in Ukraine, a space has opened up for oppressed peoples elsewhere to take steps forward in gaining independence and sovereignty.

The essential lesson of the recent period being that countries that try to free themselves from neocolonial domination can make gains so long as they stand together and back one another up, understanding that the imperialists are still dangerous and will pick rebellious nations off one by one if given half the chance. Solidarity with the care workers at Enable who are taking strike action across Scotland over the next two weeks. These workers do vital, skilled work caring for vulnerable people and yet they have suffered from low pay for many years now. The Scottish government promised to increase their wages by providing £38 million in extra funding but this commitment proved to be a lie. The money that was assigned to this suddenly disappeared and the workers have been left no alternative but to go on strike. This strike could have been avoided had the SNP government actually paid the workers what they were promised of course but there is a bigger issue at stake here. The outsourcing of vital services to charities and for profit companies only increases costs and makes the service that is delivered much more threadbare. In order that both those who need the help of carers and the workers themselves can get justice such services need to be brought back under the direct control of government with a national collective bargaining agreement in place for all who work in the sector. We stand in solidarity with the Scottish care workers and hope their action is successful!

Here is an excellent presentation that discusses health in the U.S.S.R.
The health services in capitalist countries come as reforms, in a manner of placating the workers. The Labour reforms of '45-51 were essentially a way of rebuilding a country ravaged by war, but avoiding a drive to socialism.

The U.S.S.R. viewed health completely differently. Health care was a necessity, a priority. Not just another profitable service, but a right of all workers who strive to create a better life.

One would think that the point was clear. There was no point in overthrowing capitalism in October 1917 and building socialism all these years if we are not going to secure a life of plenty for our people. Socialism does not mean poverty and privation, but the abolition of poverty and privation; it means the organisation of a prosperous and cultured life for all members of society
