123 years ago, on December 24, 1900, the first issue of the all-Russian Marxist illegal newspaper Iskra was published.
The leader of the newspaper was Lenin; he wrote articles in Iskra on the most important issues of party building and the revolutionary movement (over 1900–03, more than 50 of his articles were published in Iskra). Lenin determined the ideological and political direction of the newspaper, developed a plan for each issue, edited articles, found authors, and took care of transporting the newspaper to Russia.
Iskra was an exponent of the revolutionary tasks of the new historical era. The newspaper's epigraph was words taken from the Decembrists' response to A.S. Pushkin: “A flame will ignite from a spark.” The newspaper helped workers, peasants, and advanced intelligentsia to correctly understand the events taking place in the country, and fostered a fighting, revolutionary spirit; became a platform for denunciations of the autocratic system. Iskra defended revolutionary Marxist theory from opportunism persistently and consistently introduced socialist consciousness into the masses of the proletariat, and led a principled struggle against bourgeois liberalism and the petty-bourgeois ideology of the Socialist Revolutionaries; fought against nationalism, national hatred, national oppression, colonialism; acted as a fiery preacher of the idea of proletarian internationalism. The newspaper paid much attention to important events in international life, especially the international labor and national liberation movements.
All the activities of Iskra were aimed at the struggle for the creation of a revolutionary party of the proletariat. The editors of Iskra, after a heated debate between Lenin and Plekhanov, developed a Marxist program (published in June 1902) & party rules.
A network of agents formed around the newspaper, who distributed the newspaper throughout the country, sent correspondence to the editor, and organized Iskra groups. Iskra agents later formed the core of the Bolshevik Party.

104 years ago, on December 26, 1919, the Council of People's Commissars adopted the historic decree “On the elimination of illiteracy among the population of the RSFSR.”
At the beginning of the 20th century, Russia occupied one of the last places in Europe in terms of education. According to the 1897 census, only 24% of people in Russia were literate. Illiteracy of almost three quarters of the country's population hampered its economic and cultural development.
The decree provided for the complete elimination of illiteracy. The entire population of the republic between the ages of 8 and 50, who could not read or write, was obliged to learn to read and write in their native language or Russian at will.
The elimination of illiteracy took place in the years when gigantic transformations were carried out in industry and agriculture, the way of life was changing, and people themselves were changing. The restoration of the national economy persistently required the elimination of illiteracy and the improvement of the culture of the entire people. The Soviet government allocated huge amounts of money to combat illiteracy.
For those studying to read and write, the working day was reduced by two hours for the entire duration of training while maintaining wages. The bodies of public education were given the right to organize classes for teaching the illiterates to use people's houses, churches, clubs, private houses, suitable premises in factories and factories and in Soviet institutions. The People's Commissariat for Education and its local bodies were given the right to involve the entire literate population of the country in the education of illiterate people as labor service, with payment for their labor according to the standards of educators. The People's Commissariat of Education attracted all public organizations to participate in the work to eliminate illiteracy.
In 1925, enthusiasts in the fight against illiteracy united in the voluntary society “Down with Illiteracy.” Local branches of this society were created throughout the country, which addressed the population with an appeal: “Everyone to fight illiteracy.” The whole country sat down to books. Everyone studied, from young to old.
Over 20 years, during educational programs in the USSR, over 60 million people were taught to read and write.

Journalist investigating the purchase of a luxury villa by Zelensky's mother-in-law has died in 'mysterious circumstances'.
The body of journalist Mohammed al-Alawi was found in a deserted area, according to Egyptian media quoting police. Multiple fractures and haematomas were found on his body, and his death was caused by a cerebral haemorrhage due to a severe head injury.
The publication's source said Al-Alawi was beaten by a group of people.
In August, Al-Alawi published an investigation into a luxury villa bought by Olga Kiyashko, Zelensky's mother-in-law. The villa was located in the so-called "city of millionaires" in Egypt.

This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister of the Donetsk People's Republic Artem Kramarenko.
"This year for the first time we harvested more than one million tonnes of all grain, leguminous and industrial crops. All field work was carried out on time," said Kramarenko.
He specified that sowing areas and volumes of winter wedge sowing are increasing in the republic.
