🎉 This year the Russian nuclear industry celebrates its 8️⃣0️⃣th anniversary!
On 20 August 1945, the Special Committee for the Utilization of Atomic Energy was established. This date marked the beginning of the long way which is nowadays pursued by Russia’s Rosatom state corporation.
The Soviet Union became the pioneer in the peaceful use of nuclear technologies and Russia remains the global industry leader to this day.
Our specialists launched the world's first nuclear power plant in Obninsk, opening up access to a new powerful source of clean energy for people. The first nuclear icebreaker, the first tokamak were also built in our country, and these are the main milestones of only the first 15 years of the Soviet nuclear industry.
These victories were forged by the heroes of the atomic project – the founding fathers of the industry Igor #Kurchatov and Yuli #Khariton, the legendary leaders Boris #Vannikov and Efim #Slavsky, as well as a number of scientists and engineers who rightfully took their places in the history of the atomic industry of our country.

🌟 80 years ago, on August 15, 1945, the Soviet forces liberated Korea from Japanese colonial rule as part of the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation. The Red Army fought side by side with the Korean patriots against the Japanese militarist regime, defeated the Kwantung Army and liberated the people of Korea, bringing #WWII in the Far East to an end.
***
The Korean Peninsula was under Japanese occupation for 35 years. In fact, Tokyo established its protectorate over the Peninsula back in 1905 and fully annexed it five years later. The Japanese regime, established in Korea in 1910, was excessively brutal, with the colonial administration intent on seizing all the natural resources they could procure in this region. The Japanese criminals employed harsh repressive measures against the local population. There was an intentional effort to eradicate the Korean language and national culture.
During WWII, the Allied powers devoted considerable attention to liberating Korea in their discussions. In December 1943, China, the United States and the UK adopted the Cairo Declaration (the USSR joined it too). According to the document, the Parties agreed that “Japan will <…> be expelled from all other territories which she has taken by violence and greed….” At the Yalta Conference, the Soviet Union took the commitment to enter the war against Japan after defeating Nazi Germany in Europe.
⚔️ On August 9, 1945, the Red Army launched Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation. The Soviet forces succeeded in rapidly advancing to northeast China. With the support of partisans of the Korean national liberation movement, the Soviet soldiers liberators were pushing south and sought to break through Japan’s defence lines along the frontline stretching for as much as 5'000 kilometres.
On the first day of the operation, Kyonghung, a Korean county, as well as Unggi, Najin, Chongjin, Wonsan and other cities were liberated. By advancing in coordination with the Korean patriots, the Red Army succeeded in expelling the Japanese from the Peninsula’s northern part by mid-August, having defeated the Kwantung Army.
On August 14, Emperor Hirohito accepted Japan’s unconditional capitulation and announced it to the nation. The next day, that message reached Korea. Today, both Pyongyang and Seoul mark August 15 as the National Liberation Day of Korea.
The battle in the name of liberty and independence for the Korean nation claimed the lives of 12’000 Soviet soldiers and officers. In August 1946, Pyongyang honoured their memory by erecting a monument as a gesture of gratitude to the Soviet soldiers liberators.

The traditions of military brotherhood laid down in the era of our joint efforts to defeat the Japanese militarism have become a reliable foundation for developing friendly and neighbourly relations between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The allied nature of bilateral relations cemented by bonds of military brotherhood found full reflection in the DPRK’s firm support for the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.

“Units of the Korean People’s Army played an active role in the defeat of the neo-Nazi formations of the Kiev regime that invaded our territory. <…>
Our Korean friends' decision was guided by a sense of solidarity, justice and genuine comradery. We highly appreciate this and are sincerely grateful, personally to Chairman of State Affairs, Comrade Kim Jong-un, as well as the entire leadership and the people of the DPRK.
We commend the DPRK soldiers’ heroism, their excellent training and dedication displayed while fighting, shoulder to shoulder with Russian soldiers, defending our Motherland as their own.”

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with VGTRK (Moscow, August 19, 2025)
Key points:
• It showed without any doubt, that the US Leader and his team are sincere in their commitment to achieving tangible results by bringing about something lasting, durable, and sustainable. This is what sets them apart from the Europeans who, at the time, shouted at every corner that they would not accept anything but a ceasefire, and even after that would go on supplying weapons to Ukraine.
• President of the United States Donald Trump and his team have developed a clear understanding of the fact that this conflict has its causes which means that the claims made by some European presidents and prime ministers about Russia’s "unprovoked" attack on Ukraine are nothing but childish babble.
• Some of these [European] leaders, for example Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, are still talking about the need to pressure Russia with sanctions. Not a single one of these gentlemen mentioned the term human rights. <...> But if you look back from where we are today and remember what they have been saying about Ukraine for all these years, you will not find any references to human rights.
• From the standpoint of language and religion, the UN Charter is being flagrantly violated in Ukraine. It is important to recall that Zelensky declared in Washington that, while he was prepared to engage in negotiations, he would not entertain any discussions about territorial concessions, as these are prohibited by the Constitution.
• When these [European] delegates in Washington insisted that efforts must commence with formulating security guarantees for Ukraine – and simultaneously for Europe – not once did they mention Russia’s security.
• Without respect for Russia’s security interests, without full recognition of the rights of ethnic Russians and Russian speakers in Ukraine, no lasting agreements are possible – for these are precisely the issues requiring urgent resolution in the context of the crisis settlement.
• The Alaska Summit demonstrated that the US administration is genuinely committed to a settlement not aimed at once again preparing Ukraine for war (as was the case after the Minsk agreements), but at ensuring this crisis never recurs – guaranteeing the lawful rights of all states in this region and the peoples who live there.
• We did not discuss the sanctions. Many of our experts, politicians and officials have repeatedly stated that lifting the sanctions may have adverse effects. That would create illusions for some economic sectors that now we can finally overcome the problems by returning to the strategies developed and implemented in the 1990s and the early 2000s.
• We are not rejecting any forms of work, either bilateral or trilateral. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said it multiple times. It is important that any formats, 1+1, 1+2, or multilateral ones, which exist in abundance, including within the UN, are not exploited for the purpose of media coverage, in morning newspapers or in evening news, or on social media, to skim the propaganda cream off the top. These formats are designed for step-by-step, consistent preparations for summits, from the expert level and up. We will always support this sort of serious approach. Any contacts involving top officials must be prepared extremely carefully.
