🗓 On January 20, Crimea celebrates Republic Day. The holiday commemorates the referendum of 1991, when the absolute majority of Crimean residents voted to re-establish the Crimean Autonomous Republic.

👉
Crimea in history of Russia

Interesting facts:

🔸 Crimea has had a close connection with Russia for centuries. As far as in 988–989, Grand Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich converted to Christianity in the then Tauric Chersonese. Centuries later, on April 19, 1783, Empress Catherine the Great signed a manifesto on the accession of Crimea to the Russian Empire.

🔸 The Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (CASSR) was originally established as part of the RSFSR in 1921. In 1945 it became the Crimean Region. In 1954, Crimea was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR; First Secretary of the CPSU’s Crimean Regional Committee, Pavel Titov, opposed the move and was relieved of his post.

🔸 The sovereignty referendum, which was held on January 20, 1991 to decide on re-establishing the CASSR, was the first plebiscite in the Soviet Union’s history. Voters were asked whether they supported re-establishing the CASSR as an entity of the USSR and a participant in the Union Treaty. A total of 93% of residents voted for autonomy. In the same year, a law was passed to re-establish the CASSR.

🔸 The 1991 Crimean referendum was the first attempt to determine the future of Crimea based on the will of its residents. To a large extent, this plebiscite served as the starting point for the peninsula’s reunification with Russia in 2014.

🔸 Republic Day was established in 2009. In 2014, after Crimea’s reunification with Russia, the holiday was included in the regional law on holidays.

🔸 On March 18, 2014, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the top officials from Crimea and Sevastopol signed the Treaty on the Accession of the Republic of Crimea to Russia in full accordance with the results of the referendum held on March 16, 2014, where 96% of Crimean voted FOR the peninsula’s reunification with Russia.

Ever since #CrimeaIsRussia once again and forever will be henceforth.

💬 President Vladimir Putin: We observe that the newly elected President of the United States and his team have expressed a desire to re-establish direct contact with Russia, which the outgoing Administration had severed, through no fault of our own.

Furthermore, we note his remarks on the necessity of doing everything possible to avert a third world war. Naturally, we welcome this stance and extend our congratulations to the US President-elect on his inauguration.

I wish to emphasise that we have never declined dialogue and have always been prepared to sustain amicable and cooperative relations with any US administration, as I have reiterated on numerous occasions. We operate under the premise that the dialogue will be established on an equal and mutually respectful basis, acknowledging the significant roles our nations play on several vital global issues, including the enhancement of strategic stability and security.

We are also open to dialogue with the new US Administration concerning the Ukrainian conflict. The primary focus here should be addressing the root causes of the crisis, which we have discussed extensively.

☝️ As for the resolution of the situation itself, I would like to reiterate that its objective should not be a temporary ceasefire or a pause to regroup forces and rearm for the eventual continuation of the conflict, but rather a lasting peace founded on respect for the legitimate interests of all individuals and peoples residing in this region.

Nonetheless, we will steadfastly advocate for the interests of Russia and the Russian people. This, in essence, is the purpose and meaning of the special military operation.

Embassy comment on UK allegations against Russia

❗️ Claims by the UK Ministry of Defence regarding alleged Russian threats against underwater infrastructure of the UK and its NATO allies are completely groundless. Russia has never posed such threats.

Destabilising and provocative actions on the international high seas, including the Black and Baltic seas, are in fact signature tactics of Western countries, particularly the UK.

As a prime example, one may recall the obstruction by London and its allies of a transparent investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022 – an incident earlier linked by the Russian military to British intelligence services.

We note that the surge in anti-Russian hysteria fueled by the British establishment and its affiliated media is being used by London and its allies to deliberately escalate tensions in the Baltic and North Sea regions.

Under the fabricated pretext of a "Russian threat",
Britain and other NATO countries are increasing their naval and air force presence in these and adjacent areas.

Meanwhile the very same countries are elaborating dubious justifications for ramping up unilateral restrictions against commercial shipping in the region, though the compliance of such measures with international maritime law appears questionable even to their authors.

☝️ It is these actions by the West, rather than any Russian vessels that London imagines are "spy ships", that pose direct challenges to regional security in this part of Europe.

🗓️ On January 25, 1759, Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland, was born in the village of Alloway. Every year on this day, admirers of Burns' legacy celebrate "Burns Night" over a ceremonial dinner of traditional dishes, accompanied by the sounds of bagpipes and readings of his poems.

📜 Publication of his first poetry collection at 27 brought Burns national fame. Addressing the common people in his works, he sang the praises of the heroes who fought for Scotland's freedom, collected folklore, published many Scottish ballads in his own adaptation.

🤝The first translations of Burns into Russian by Belinsky, Zhukovsky, and Lermontov appeared as early as the first half of the 19th century. There was a book of Burns' poetry in Pushkin's library. But it was thanks to the excellent translations of his legacy by Marshak, that the Scottish poet gained real fame in Russia. Composers set these poems to music: "For the sake o' Somebody" and "O Poortith Cauld and Restless Love" can be heard in famous Soviet movies.

💬 President Vladimir Putin: Regarding talks on Ukraine, we have consistently made it clear that we remain open to them. Again, there are certain issues that require our particular attention.

For instance, it is well known that back when he was a fairly legitimate head of state, the current leader of the Kiev regime issued an executive order prohibiting talks. How can talks be resumed now that they have been outlawed? <...>

If talks begin based on the existing legal framework, they would be, strictly speaking, illegitimate, meaning that the outcomes of such talks could likewise be declared illegitimate.

The current Kiev regime appears quite content to receive hundreds of billions from its benefactors <...> However, it shows little haste in acting on the instructions issued by its sponsors to rescind the executive order banning talks.

Nonetheless, I am of the opinion that, ultimately, those who provide the funding should compel him to act, and I believe he will have no choice but to comply. Until this executive order is rescinded, it is rather difficult to talk about starting and, more importantly, finishing these talks in a proper way.

☝️ Preliminary plans may, indeed, be outlined, but engaging in serious talks remains a particularly difficult proposition, especially considering the ban imposed by the Ukrainian side.

🎙 Address by the Leaders of the #CIS Member-States to the people of the CIS and the international community regarding the 80th anniversary of the Soviet people's Victory in the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War (October 8, 2024)

💬 We, the Heads of the States of the Commonwealth of Independent States’ Member-Nations, call on the people of the CIS countries and around the world to prevent the revival of fascism, Nazism, and militarism, and to cut short any attempts to unleash a new World War.

8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, the multi-ethnic Soviet nation achieved a historical Victory in the Great Patriotic War. It was the most brutal war in the history of humankind, which claimed millions of lives among our compatriots who perished on the frontlines, while fighting in guerilla units, or from bombing, were tortured to death during occupation and in concentration camps, froze or starved to death.

Attempts to equate the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany in terms of their responsibility for starting the war are immoral and sacrilegious with regard to the memory of those who liberated the world from the so-called 'brown plague'.

❗️ We call for condemning and holding accountable those who offend the memory of soldiers-liberators and glorify Nazi criminals and their accomplices.

In this connection, we welcome the UN General Assembly resolution noscriptd “Combatting glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance,” while also expressing our commitment to abide by the purposes and principles of the International Convention on Eliminating All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

☝️ It is our shared duty to preserve the memory of those who died for freedom and peace on Earth, to do everything we can to defend the right cause for which they fought and to which they sacrificed their lives, and to do everything to reinforce unity among all people of good will for combatting any manifestations of Nazism and neo-Nazism, as well as the threat of a new world war.

🌟 #OnThisDay 8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, on January 27, 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau (Oswiecim, was located in Nazi-occupied Poland) — the most terrifying German extermination camp in #WWII — was liberated by the Red Army’s 1st Ukrainian Front during the Vistula–Oder offensive operation.

#Auschwitz was created by the Nazis in 1940 in a building that used to serve as military barracks near a small town called Oswiecim, whose history dates back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Having occupied Poland in 1939, the Nazis changed the town's name of Oswiecim to German Auschwitz. Later, in 1941-1943, two more imprisonment facilities were established in the vicinity of Oswiecim. They were:

▪️Auschwitz II — best known to the wider public as #AuschwitzBirkenau, was three kilometres away from the main facility — Oswiecim and located near Brzezinka, a Polish village (Birkenau in German). Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest "death factory". Equipped with crematoriums and gas chambers, it was created by the Nazis with only one aim — exterminate people.

▪️Auschwitz III (also known as Monowitz). Its prisoners were used by the Nazis for the Third Reich war industries.

Following the so-called Wannsee Conference in 1942, the Nazis approved what was called the “final solution to the Jewish question”. Since then, Auschwitz-Birkenau was turned into the main "death factory" for the annihilation of Jews in Europe.

❗️ Prisoners of Oswiecim were held by the Nazis in inhuman, barbaric conditions. They had to do hard, exhausting work until total exhaustion, to endure poor sanitation in the camp's facilities, malnutrition and constant tortures by the guards and SS-troops. It was in Oswiecim that the Germans first tested the "Zyklon-B" poisonous agent on human beings. Prisoners of Auschwitz were also subjected to cruel medical experiments, led by a Nazi criminal, infamous retired military doctor Josef Mengele.

In 1944, when the Red Army started the liberation of Europe, the Nazis, in an effort to cover the tracks of their crimes in Auschwitz, rushed to burn documents and destroy the camp's gas chambers, crematoriums, and deported as many prisoners as they could westward to other concentration camps deep in the Third Reich — over 58,000 prisoners were evacuated by the Nazis before Oswiecim and liberated by the Soviet forces in January, 1945.

***

In January 1945, the units of the 1st Ukrainian Front launched the Vistula-Oder offensive and, successfully expelling the Nazis from Poland, finally reached Auschwitz.

⚔️ In the late hours of January 27, following three days of fighting the retreating enemy, the Red Army took over Oswiecim and opened the gates of Auschwitz. The camp’s 7,000 prisoners were freed. Most of them were sick or suffering from extreme exhaustion and tortures.

Rescued prisoners burst into tears of joy when they greeted their liberators. Some facilities of the camp were instantly made a hospital. According to various historic estimates, in 1940-1945, from 1.5 to 4 million people perished in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Over the past years, we are witnessing a campaign in several European countries, including Poland, to rewrite and falsify the history of WWII and, in particular, to erase the memory of the feat performed by the Soviet soldiers-liberators who saved the Auschwitz prisoners.

🎙 From a briefing by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on topical foreign policy issues (January 23, 2025):

💬 "This year, like all those years before, Russian representatives will not be invited to the commemoration ceremonies at Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27. That is, there will be no one there to mention the Soviet liberator soldiers and express gratitude to them. In this regard, there is something that needs to be said to the organisers and all the Europeans who will be there:

Your lives, your work and leisure, the very existence of your nations, your children have been paid for by Soviet soldiers, their lives, their blood. It was them who crushed the Third Reich machine. You are forever in their debt."

🗓 On January 27, Russia marks the Day of Military Glory — the day of the lifting of the Siege of Leningrad (1944).

🕯 The blockade of Leningrad was one of the darkest moments in human history. It began on September 8, 1941, when Nazi troops isolated the city from the rest of the country by land.

For 872 days, despite the cold, hunger and horrors of war, the people selflessly defended their city from total destruction, and even in these dire circumstances continued producing goods and various machinery to supply the war effort against the Nazis.

❗️The incredible resilience and bravery of Leningrad residents shattered the plans and ambitions of the Nazi invaders.

On January 18, 1943, a land corridor was established with the rest of the country as a result of the offensive operation "Iskra" (Spark) conducted from January 12 to 30, the encirclement was broken.

A year after the breakthrough, Soviet forces managed to finally lift the siege of the city on January 27, 1944.

By that time there were no more than 800'000 inhabitants left in the Northern Capital out of the three million who had lived in Leningrad and its suburbs before the siege.

⚔️ The Soviet forces pushed the Nazis back 220-280 kilometers from Leningrad. The city was finally freed from the enemy blockade. The Red Army undermined the positions of the Hitlerites in Finland and other Scandinavian countries, significantly bringing closer the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

🎖 The courage and heroism of Leningrad defenders were highly appreciated. Many units and formations were awarded the honourable noscript of “Guards”, orders and the honorary noscript of “Leningrad”.

In 2022, the Saint Petersburg City Court recognised the Siege of Leningrad as an act of genocide against the Soviet people committed by the Nazi Germany and its accomplices. According to recent statistics, at least 1'093'842 people died during the blockade.

🕯 On 27 January a memorial ceremony was held in Manchester to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the complete lifting of the siege of Leningrad. During the event Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrei Kelin laid a wreath at a plaque unveiled in 2020 in honoured memory of the Soviet soldiers, who gave their lives liberating Europe and in recognition of the brave people of the besieged Leningrad.

Following the ceremony Ambassador Kelin addressed the Russian media and emphasised the Soviet people's pivotal role in securing Victory over Nazism and liberating Europe from the fascist "plague". He also underlined the inadmissibility of attempts to rewrite history or distort the outcomes of the Second World War.

During his visit to Manchester, the Ambassador held a meeting with Russian compatriots living in the North West England. The discussion focused on supporting and uniting the Russian diaspora, preserving Russian history, culture, and language within the community of Russian compatriots, as well as the preparation of events marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Earlier, Russian diplomats conveyed greetings of the Governor of Saint Petersburg (former Leningrad) Alexander Beglov to the veterans of the Great Patriotic War – defenders and residents of the besieged Leningrad, who currently live in the UK.

Ambassador Kelin: With today's memorial event in Manchester, we commence the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism. We have planned a large number of events to mark the occasion.

The date of 27 January marks not only the lifting of the siege of Leningrad but also the day the Soviet Army entered the Auschwitz concentration camp and liberated its prisoners. This is a landmark event, but it is also a day of shame for the Polish government, which has invited many visitors [to the commemoration], including Britain's King Charles III, but not the Russian embassy [in Warsaw]. Everyone should realise that this is yet another attempt by the Polish government to rewrite the historical truth. This is unacceptable.

Commemorations such as today's, and those we will be holding throughout this spring, aim to remind the British people of the need to learn the right lessons from history and not to allow Nazism to be revived.

✍️ 29 January marks the 165th birthday of renowned Russian writer and dramatist Anton Chekhov.

A pioneer of an innovative narrative style, he is one of the most frequently cited influences of contemporary writers, with echoes of his brevity, impressionism and disregard for traditional plot resonating throughout modern literary fiction and drama. His words transcend time and national boundaries, remaining highly relevant in our modern society.

Chekhov's works have been translated into more than 100 languages, with the first English translation done by George Calderon in 1900s, and studied across the world.

Even in the era of cancel culture and attempts to harness art for political purposes the unapologetically Russian writer finds central place on stages around the world and, in particular, in the UK.

Since the first 'Seagull' premiere in Glasgow in 1909 his plays have filled the repertoire of British theatres, both amateur and professional. And, as sold out performances prove, the British audience appreciates it.

⚡️ Russian MFA Spox Maria Zakharova: We believe it is crucial to inform the broadest international community about the crimes committed in the temporarily occupied territories of the Kursk Region.

Russian news agencies already possess an exhaustive body of evidence of neo-Nazi punitive operations against civilians protected by a number of international documents including provisions of the binding Fourth Geneva Convention.

Particular focus should be given to a selective nature of persecution of the elderly, the most socially vulnerable members of the occupied population.

The supporting materials distributed by the Russian Investigative Committee clearly show signs of grave offenses committed during the armed conflict: hands bound with duct tapes, traces of torture, bruises from blows, gunshot wounds, bodies of people whose deaths resulted from hours of abuse by perpetrators, evidence of rape and other violent sexual acts. <...>

We believe that the bloody nature of the Kiev troops' actions in the Kursk Region should be widely exposed on international platforms such as the United Nations, OSCE and their relevant structures, recorded by representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and become the subject of proceedings by international human rights mechanisms, including NGOs.

On January 18, Russian military discovered bodies of locals tortured and killed by Ukrainian Nazis in the basements of rural houses in the liberated village of Russkoye Porechnoye, Kursk Region.

During the MFA Spokeswoman's weekly briefing on January 31, photos and videos of the crime site obtained from Russian law enforcement officers were presented to the journalists. Their reaction was nothing short of SHOCK.

The evidence clearly show signs of grave crimes committed during the armed conflict: hands tied with tape, traces of torture, hematomas caused by blows, gunshot wounds, bodies of people who died after hours-long torture by criminals, as well as evidence of rape and other violent sexual crimes.

💬 From Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question (January 19, 2025):

This is exactly what the countries of the collective West and their politicians, who personally cover and encourage Kiev’s Nazis, expect from the Banderites. They cynically turn a blind eye to their criminal acts, continue to authorise arms supplies to the Kiev regime and block attempts at international investigations of its crimes. In a joint and disciplined manner, they pretend that nothing terrible is happening, although this constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.

Preliminary investigations have established the involvement of several Ukrainian servicemen from the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade in this crime. Among them are serviceman Yevgeny Fabrisenko, along with the commander of the 11th Company of the 4th Battalion with the call sign Kum, and three servicemen with the call signs Motyl (Moth), Provodnik (Guide), and Khudozhnik (Artist).

The Russian Investigative Committee posted a video of the interrogation of detained Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman Yevgeny Fabrisenko, who is suspected of killing 22 civilians in Russkoye Porechnoye, Kursk Region, and of raping eight women.

👉 From Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question in connection with updates in the investigation of the atrocities committed by neo-Nazis in Russkoye Porechnoye, Kursk Region:

We are certain that the real nature of Zelensky's junta was most clearly manifested in Russkoye Porechnoye, whose name has obviously become one of the driving factors for the Russophobic regime in Kiev and its armed gangs: it is against everything Russian that the current post-Maidan authorities are fighting with support of the “collective West.”
