Wertham’s Influence
Reich’s ideas of promoting freedom, personal accountability, and work democracy as presented in The Mass Psychology of Fascism agitated Wertham in the same way Rulah of the Jungle did, her bare legs and long hair exposed seductively as she swung on jungle vines. In his 1946 New Republic review of the book he viciously attacked Reich's theories, saying Reich had “utter contempt for the masses” and was a “neo-fascist.” He ended his scathing write-up by urging all progressive intellectuals to take action against Reich and his “psycho-fascism.” This set the stage for Brady's destructive follow-ups.
It was only six months after Wertham’s review that Brady’s first attack, noscriptd The New Cult of Sex and Anarchy, appeared in Harper's magazine. And a month after that, in May 1947, The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich was published in the New Republic.
Wertham’s influence on the media continued unabated for, in a 1948 Collier’s Magazine article, there appeared a piece, Horrors in the Nursery, written by a Judith Crist. She sited Wertham's “findings about the evils of comic books.” Her wide assertions about how crime and horror comics led directly to juvenile delinquency and worse, fully supported Wertham’s ideas. However, throughout the article no actual science or studies were cited, and Wertham’s conclusions were accepted as fact even though they were baseless. He simply felt comics were bad for people and the media believed him. Regarding the inconvenient question of press freedom, Crist quotes Wertham, "...the publishers will raise a howl about Freedom of Speech and of the Press...nonsense. The time has come to legislate these books off the news stands and out of the candy stores."
In 1954, Wertham’s book, Seduction of the Innocent was published. He claimed it to be the result of “seven years of scientific investigation.” Yet, like his other publications, the book contains no scientific investigations. Instead, it is full of assertions based on what he believed to be true, and little else. Research done in 2010 by Carol Tilley on Seducing the Innocent: Fredric Wertham and the Falsifications That Helped Condemn Comics has confirmed that, “Wertham manipulated, overstated, compromised, and fabricated evidence—especially that evidence he attributed to personal clinical research with young people—for rhetorical gain.”
Comic Books and Bonfires
Wertham's 1940's articles, and his 1954 book, led to a massive witch-hunt by the government and other authorities, culminating in a senate subcommittee hearing to investigate the terrible scourge of American comic books. Even more disturbing was the action taken around the country by local activist groups.
As early as 1950, the mayor of Rumson, NJ, along with a local cub master and others herded forty Cub Scouts (not Boy Scouts) into a commandeered fire truck. For two days, they drove the engine through the borough with the siren blaring, collecting comic books for destruction.
In Missouri, a Girl Scout troop and St. Mary's Church created a massive bonfire of comics. Children were seen crying among the gathered crowds. One child of a poor rural family recalled being made to participate in the book burnings, even though he had never read a comic book. "The thing about it is that I didn't give the comic books much thought until that time, and when we started that bonfire, I started to think something really just wasn't right about it. I thought they were trying to use us, and I didn't think that was right. It got me pretty mad. I never did think about teachers in the same way after that."
In the end, the government concluded that they had no legal reason for banning comics. It was a simple matter of free speech. But the damage had already been done. In just two years, half of the comic books published in the US disappeared. Hundreds of artists and writers lost their jobs. Stan Lee, of the Timely/Marvel group, had to fire his staff in a day, one at a time.

People who had created memorable stories in a uniquely American art form found jobs bagging groceries and as security guards. The most creative company, EC comics survived by changing one of their comic book publications to something called Mad Magazine. Every other noscript was canceled.
In 1953, Ray Bradbury wrote his classic, Fahrenheit 451, a cautionary tale of an authoritarian future where government “firemen” sought books hidden in citizen's homes, and torched them in bonfires. It was only a few years since the Nazis had consigned thousands of books to the flames (including Reich’s), and not many years before we here in the United States burned comics and then Wilhelm Reich's books.
The part Dr. Fredric Wertham played was not directly involved in the court’s decision to burn Dr. Reich's books, and there Is no evidence he intended for schoolyards across America to host bonfires of comics. But his attempt to protect the public led, inexorably, to these acts of extreme censorship. The urge Wertham had to clamp down and extinguish ideas and expression of freedom not consistent with his thinking took possesion of him. It drove him, as it did religious leaders, and authoritarian parents and teachers, to use the power they had to enforce their beliefs.
As we reflect on Dr. Wertham's legacy, we can console ourselves with the fact that these book burnings took place in a different America, one that disappeared more than half a century ago. Except that this is not entirely true. In 2001 book burnings in New Mexico and Pennsylvania reduced Harry Potter novels to ashes. Reverend George Bender, of The Harvest Assembly of God Church commented, "We got some people mad at us, but it's good to have publicity.”
It is generally believed that Mildred Edie Brady, who was granted an interview by Reich by posing as one enthusiastic about his work, was the single person responsible for the US government’s campaign against Reich. It is true her article in the NR did lead, just two months later, to the FDA investigation. But Wertham’s book review in the same publication, six months earlier, may well have set the stage for Brady.
There is no hard evidence that Brady decided to visit Reich because of Wertham’s review of The Mass Psychology of Fascism. However, it’s not a far reach to question if she would have, or could have, written The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich had it not been for Dr. Frederick Wertham. If this is so, Reich’s books might not have been burned and he sent to prison where he died.

Dear Reader,
People long for deep emotional contact and, to varying degrees, may sense that it is on the decline. What may be less clear to them, however, is what exactly deep, undisturbed emotional contact looks like. How often do we have the opportunity to witness pure impulses of love and health? Case studies in this issue of the Journal bring us face to face with the profound emotional health of newborns, when the natural conditions of birth are not restricted. Seeing these infants respond to their mothers with trust and contentment, we become clear about what contact is. These expressions of unfettered life help us define and frame wellness, giving us context with which to better understand and defend against disturbances of contact and the emotional plague.
An editorial by Howard Chavis, M.D. highlights emotional contact, which is the essential core of a healthy life. He notes the remarkable ability of newborns, described in Dr. Chasapi’s case studies, to make and sustain energetic emotional contact immediately after birth. Contrast this with present-day psychiatry which has become mechanistic, and with AI, which, despite whatever advances it may offer, will never provide natural emotional energetic contact, the core of medical orgone therapy.
Virginia Whitener, Ph.D. recounts a time when a patient left an urgent voicemail, yelling “Call me! I need perspective!” Dr. Whitener explains that through her therapy she was heartened by her patient’s ability to recognize when her perception might be off. In this exchange, we also see the patient’s trust in Dr. Whitener, which comes through in her emotional message and in her confidence that Dr. Whitener will (and did) respond to her and restore her clarity of thinking.
Theodata Chasapi, M.D. recounts three homebirths and shares glimpses of the profound contact between mothers and newborns in the moments immediately after birth. These homebirths contrast starkly with the clinical and frightening experiences routinely suffered by newborns in hospitals. Revealed here is the astounding capacity of the newborn to make, and even initiate contact with the mother. These portraits of deep emotional contact and the tender beginnings of life underscore the importance of nurturing and protecting healthy expression whenever we are lucky enough to encounter it.
Christopher Burritt, D.O., in Part V of “A Family Deals with Its Emotions, A Mother’s Work,” helps a mother work through her feelings of anger and frustration: “Why is it weird for a mother to be home with her children? Why is it weird for me to take care of things at home and not also work somewhere else? I get it ALL the time!” she shouted.
In her series “Another Face of the Emotional Plague,” Virginia Whitener, Ph.D. considers two nefarious characters from Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville. In contrast to emotional plague characters who dissemble, the characters of Bartolo and Don Basilio scheme openly and with full awareness that their intentions are malevolent. An exploration of these characters and their interactions with others sheds light on the inner-workings of the emotional plague and the means by which it can draw others in, even those who initially stand in opposition to it.
Janice Natale, M.A. shares her experience of reading a Dr. Konia blog, particularly his explanation of functional thinking, and how it helped her make sense of the confusion generated by media sites and ongoing political commentary. Recently, Natale’s awareness of functional thinking led to a deeper understanding of the early economic policies of Benjamin Netanyahu, which served as a rational, and successful, response to Israel’s economic malaise.

An Appeal to Caution on "Desert Greening"
James DeMeo

Excerpt
"... I became a big critic of the Algeria project of Mr. Abdellaziz, http://www.desert-greening.com which already a few years ago produced results which parallel the alarming scenario I mention above, along with a few other bad surprises. While Algerian weather did appear to moisten somewhat (much remains to be documented here), specifically in 2007 the work there energized the ITCZ and massive floods appeared in Tropical Africa. There was a consequent displacement of the Saharan dry-air mass eastward out of the Morocco-Algeria region, then northward into Greece, triggering droughts and massive wildfires. That is what my preliminary analysis revealed. He is an amateur who does not know what he is doing, in my estimation, working over very long periods without a break, as if to "force" the atmosphere to do this or that, without understanding of the issue of natural life-energy pulsation."

America’s Wars Against the Emotional Plague Charles Konia, M.D. http://charleskonia.com/americas-wars-against-the-emotional-plague/ America has been actively battling the emotional plague on two fronts for decades; Militarily and knowingly in the Middle East…
The concepts of traditional psychology and depth psychology are bound up with word formations. The living, however, functions beyond all verbal ideas and concepts. Verbal language is a biological form of expression on a high level of development. It is by no means an indispensable attribute of the living, for the living functions long before there is verbal language.

WILHELM REICH AND THE COLD WAR: The True Story of How a Communist Spy Team, Government Hoodlums and Sick Psychiatrists Destroyed Sexual Science and Cosmic Life Energy Discoveries, by James Edward Martin. Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957), his colleagues, and his antagonists, are among the most influential groups of people of the 20th century. As a part of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic movement in Vienna, Reich is hailed as an innovator. His later work in the United States brought him to an ignominious end when he died in federal prison. Author and researcher James Edward Martin took up the subject of the controversial psychoanalytic pioneer and natural scientist, expecting to disprove Reich's suspicions that his detractors were predominantly communists and even Soviet spies. This led the author to dusty university archives across the United States and Europe, and to interview Reich's associates and relatives. He also made Freedom of Information Act searches of FDA, FBI and CIA files, investigating not only their files on Reich, but also of his major detractors. In this book, you'll meet Karl Frank, the leader of an underground anti-Nazi group of Germans, calling themselves "New Beginning." Frank was a friend of Reich's in Vienna in the 20s; he later worked for Allen Dulles' intelligence agency Office of Strategic Services. It was Karl Frank who confirmed to Reich that Mildred Edie Brady, the instigator of the FDA's persecution of Reich, was indeed a fully committed Soviet agent. You'll listen in on conversations with Michael Straight, who was the publisher of Mildred Brady's article in "The New Republic" magazine. You'll hear his explanation of his tangled past involvement with a notorious den of Soviet moles, the Cambridge Five spy ring that included Anthony Blunt, Kim Philby, Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess. You'll learn how Stalin's agents used Reich's own techniques of character analysis in a perverted way, in order to find psychological hooks into the minds of innocent people, conforming them to the red thread of conspiracy. You'll see what Mildred Brady, a cheerleader for the Emotional Plague, did to her own daughter. You'll travel to Arizona, and visit the places where Reich conducted his atmospheric medicine, under the noses of officials in the government's weather modification center, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics. You'll join Albert Einstein at Princeton as he tests Reich's discoveries, confirms them experimentally but not pursuing them. You'll meet the famed Dr. James E. McDonald and his colleagues at the University of Arizona, about McDonald's groundbreaking work on weather modification and UFO research - he was one of the first mainstream scientists to blow the whistle on a government cover-up. Wilhelm Reich and the Cold War is exceptionally well documented with numerous citations, in a fully indexed edition including an Appendix with newly uncovered documents from FDA and FBI files, damning Reich's persecutors. 420 pp.

For several thousand years the doctor/patient relationship has been one of the most significant as well as intensely emotional and intimate of all human bonds. In recent history, however, this connection has deteriorated. What goes on in the doctor's office has become a major source of stress for all. Both patients and doctors feel rushed during appointments, burdened by skyrocketing expenses and frustrated and aggravated by having to deal with insurance company and government bureaucracies. On February 5, 2011 at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts in Princeton, New Jersey, Board certified psychiatrists Peter Crist, M.D. and Edward Chastka, M.D. focused on this very compelling situation, leading an open discussion ennoscriptd "Is the Doctor Really In? - Making Each Visit Count," as part of the ACO's ongoing Social Orgonomy Presentation Series.

Their approach:
This presentation was different from past events in that it was an open discussion with the audience. Why did you make that change?
Dr. Crist: "We decided to experiment with this format so that we could engage the audience in a more informal discussion and focus on what matters most to them. We wanted to make a real connection with everyone who attended in as direct a way as possible."
Dr. Chastka: "And we wanted to listen to what people, both doctors and patients, had to say, not just talk to them."
What do you see as the primary cause of the lack of a genuine connection between doctor and patient?
Dr. Crist: "The doctor/patient relationship has been undermined by many different forces in recent years. The toughest change is that doctors have to deal with patients in a more mechanical way just to get paid. Because of insurance and government regulations, doctors are seeing more patients for shorter visits in order to make a living. The threat of malpractice suits has also been very destructive, and now most doctors have a figurative lawyer sitting in with them when they see patients and make medical decisions.
I want to be clear that this is not the doctor's fault. We're not blaming anyone, but rather focusing on what the problem is and what we can do about it. Both doctors and patients need to work together to make better contact. Doctors have become health care providers, and are no longer healers. A different kind of contact is essential for healing to happen, and we hope people left the discussion with new tools to help make that a reality."
Dr. Chastka: "Over the last, say, 100 years, people have been looked upon more and more as a biochemical machine, and the idea that there is a healing relationship between doctor and patient has lost its popularity even though there is a lot of information supporting its effectiveness. For example, studies in psychiatry with a control group of patients merely coming in and meeting with someone and talking, found that that alone was beneficial to the patient. However, because of health insurance, seeing a doctor is now more like dropping your car off at the mechanic, and that's not a relationship.
How has medical insurance contributed to the deterioration of the doctor/patient relationship?
Dr. Chastka: When health insurance first came about in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s there were no restraints - doctors no longer had to think about what it actually cost the patient, and the patient no longer had to worry about paying the doctor. This resulted in an explosion in medical costs -- not only in doctor and hospital fees but also with pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies. Since then we have gone even further down that road. People don't pay for their own regular medical care anymore and so prices are set in order to get the maximum amount from the insurance companies. The cost of medical care has lost any connection with reality, and the insurance companies decide whether the patient gets something or not. All of these things have contributed toward destroying the doctor/patient relationship and the true healing that it can bring about."

A Preliminary Investigation into a Prototype Device Based Upon Reich’s Spacegun

Introduction and Background
....
As early as 1940, Reich was experimenting with processes that would eventually lead to the invention of the cloudbuster – an array of long metal pipes, 9 to 12 foot long, grounded into water and pointed at the sky. Cloudbusters have scientifically evidenced effects upon weather conditions. If there is a continuum of aether-like energy in the sky, orgone, which is attracted to water and can be entrained in tubes, then it would be logical that such a device might work.
It all started with Reich observing that metal pipes, when aimed at the orgone waves he could see hovering above Lake Mooselookmeguntic in Maine, had some kind of effect upon those subtle energy waves. It appears that Reich always had a high degree of ‘energetic’ type ‘soft’ vision.
