This year's theme is 'Proud in culture, strong in spirit'.
Today and every day we celebrate the strength and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, to give them confidence and make them feel special, seen and included.
The date August 4th was historically used to communally celebrate the birthdays of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who did not know their birthdays as they were taken from their families – the Stolen Generations.

“More than 1,500 people from many walks of life gathered together for the Penelakut Tribe’s March for the Children in Chemainus Monday in a show of force for desired change and to call on governments to acknowledge the truths about Canada’s residential school system.
“Today we are walking for the children who didn’t have the chance to walk with us today,” Penelakut chief Joan Brown said to attendees. “I’d like to thank you all for being here walking with the survivors — walking together as one. We’re all holding each other up at this time. This is a very emotional time for a lot of the survivors and the families of children who were lost. Today we honour them. They were not forgotten.”

Between 2018 and 2019, about 18,000 First Nations children were in out-of-home care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are eight times as likely as non‑Indigenous children to have received child protection services.
A “staggering” 81% of First Nations children are on long-term guardianship orders, which means they are in state care to the age of 18 and are thus “at serious risk of permanent separation from their families, cultures and communities”.
