امسال بنیاد آلفرد نوبل جایزهی خود را به دو دانشمند فیزیولوژیست آمریکایی اعطا خواهد کرد، و به خاطر کشف بزرگی خواهد بود که آنها در فعالیت ژنتیکی سلولها صورت دادهاند. به خاطر کشف یک اصل مهم که فعالیت ژنها را تنظیم میکند.
در تک تک سلولهای بدن ما یک مجموعه اطلاعات ژنتیکی به صورت ۲۳ جفت کروموزوم وجود دارد، که مثل یک کتابچهی راهنما است. این کتابچه واقعا مثل یک کتابچه است! یعنی نسخههای آن در همهی سلولهایمان مثل نسخههای یک کتاب است. یعنی اطلاعات موجود در همهی آنها درست مثل هم است. هر سلولی همهی فعالیتهای خود را از روی اطلاعات موجود در این کتابچهاش انجام میدهد. اما عجیب اینکه هر سلولی فقط اطلاعاتی را از این کتابچه میخواند که به کارش مربوط میشود! سلولهایی که در بدن ما هستند شکلهای مختلفی دارند و کارهایشان شبیه هم نیست. در واقع هر دسته از آنها کارهای مشخصی را انجام میدهند که با کارهای دستههای دیگر فرق دارد. مثلاً سلولهای عضلانی داریم که شکل مخصوصی دارند و کار مشخصی انجام میدهند که تولید حرکت برای اندامها و اعضای مختلف است. سلولهای عصبی داریم، که شکلهای مخصوص خود را دارند و کارهای مشخصی انجام میدهند؛ مثل تولید حافظه، احساس، آگاهی و غیره. الی آخر. اما سلولها چطور میتوانند فقط اطلاعات مربوط به خود را از آن کتابچه بخوانند؟ مسئله به چیزی به نام تنظیم ژن مربوط میشود. یعنی در هر سلولی فقط ژنهای مربوط به شکل و ظایف آن سلول فعال میشوند نه همهی ژنهایی که در کتابچهاش هست.
کشفی که برندگان نوبل امسال پزشکی صورت دادهاند، به یک بخش از این تنظیم ژن مربوط میشود. عوامل بسیاری هستند که این تنظیم را به عهده دارند. مقداری از آنها قبلاً کشف شده بودند. کشفی که ویکتور آمبروس و گری روکون انجام دادهاند به یک عامل دیگر مربوط میشود که ظاهراً مهمتر از همهی عوامل دیگر است. این عامل یکجور رنا یا آر ان ای است، که چون برعکس رنای معمولی خیلی کوچک یا ریز است اسمش را ریزرنا یا میکرو آر ان ای گذاشته اند. رناهای معمولی هر کدام چند صد یا حتی هزار ژن در خود دارند، اما این ریزرناهاها هر کدام فقط از حدود ۲۰ ژن تشکیل میشوند. کارشان هم این است که در آن کتابچه یا دستورالعملی که در هر سلول هست، فقط ژنهای مربوط به شکل و وظایف آن سلول را فعال میکنند. با بقیهی ژنها کاری ندارند. آنها در واقع یکی از رازهای شکلگیری بدن را کشف کردهاند.
