“ France took note of the putschists' request. They do not have the authority to make this request, the ambassador's approval comes solely from the legitimately elected authorities of Niger,” the French Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier on Friday, the new authorities in Niger gave French Ambassador Sylvain Itte 48 hours to leave the country. Their statement was a response to the refusal of the French ambassador in Niamey to respond to the minister's invitation to the meeting.

On August 17, ECOWAS announced that they were ready for military intervention in the situation in Niger if diplomatic efforts were unsuccessful.
