The Federation Council has evaluated Russia's grain harvest for 2023

The projected grain harvest for this year is slightly lower than last year, at approximately 140 million tonnes. However, it is expected to meet domestic market demands and fulfill export commitments in full. Alexander Dvoinikh, the head of the Federation Council Committee on Agrarian and Food Policy and Natural Resources Management, shared this information in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Agricultural producers have harvested 5 million tonnes of vegetables in open fields, marking a 16% increase from last year.

Additionally, 1.3 million tonnes were harvested in greenhouses. Vegetable harvesting is still ongoing in the southern regions.

Threat of Conflict in the Korean Peninsula

After a meeting between leadership of South Korea and the US, ahead of a meeting of UN Command, North Korea has demanded an end to the "illegal war organization" According to the foreign ministry of the DPRK, “[it] is an essential requirement for preventing the outbreak of a new war and defending peace and security in the Korean peninsula"

In response to a previous request in 1994, the UN Secretary General stated UN Command was merely a recommendation by the Security Council, not a "subsidiary organ under its control.” Thus, dissolution of the force is at discretion of the US.

Besides UN Command, the US has two other military commands in South Korea, a combined Republic of Korea/US command and US Forces Korea. South Korea is host to 76 US military installations, a number surpassed only by Japan and Germany.

South Korea will take a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the years 2024-2025.

The US State Department is in disarray over an internal memo criticizing Biden for "disinformation" about the war in the Gaza Strip.

The memo, signed by at least 100 State Department and Agency for International Cooperation officials, accuses the Biden administration of “spreading disinformation” about the situation in the Gaza Strip and suggests that the United States is “complicit in genocide” and has demonstrated a “documented reluctance to de-escalate.”

The memo suggests that Washington, “even before October 7,” demonstrated a “reckless lack of strategic foresight” in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Meatgrinder: Russian Tactics in the Second Year of Its Invasion of Ukraine

This aptly named white paper was written for Ukrainian leadership and officers prior to Ukraine’s counter-offenssive. It wasn't intended for general readership. So, while it does stroke egoes, an attempt is made at a realistic appraisal Russian forces.

This is a 7 part retrospective, summation and commentary on the white paper published in May 2023 by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). In it, we’ll examine the following topics:

* Engineers
* Artillery
* Armor
* Electronic Warfare
* Aviation
* Command and Contro.

Finally, we’ll discuss the recommendations for Ukraine's commanders prior to the Counter-Offensive, how and why they failed.

Monday - Infantry
The paper notes that Russian military doctrine defines the following use of infantry, though it does not makes the distinction between what they cynically refer to them as “disposable”—and other assault forces. I'll refer to these 2 catergories as Assault and Elite forces.

There are four distinct infantry units:

1. Assault: What the paper refers to as “meat waves” were observed to attack at platoon strength in 2-5 man units using small arms. They attacked along a single of axis where potential weakness were found. This infantrymen advance to the line of contact, probe and locate enemy defensive positions, prepare advance positions for specialized and assault infantry and wear down enemy defensive capabilities.

2. Elite: Battled-hardened, and well-protected assault units. They are used once exploitable vectors of attack have been identified to breakthrough enemy defenses once they are softened by advance and specialized infantry. Among them you will find the VDV, Marines, Special Unit Ahkmat, and Wagner forces.

3. Specialized: Once assault units have established a depth of forward positions, Specialized infantry units move to forward positions behind them. These units include mortar teams, snipers, FPV drone operators, and artillery spotters. These are the primary cause of major attrition among enemy forces. Whether in a defensive or offensive posture, these units aid in the suppression of enemy fire, and pave the wave for assault infantry.

4. Line:These are formed from rank and file mechanized infantry. They replace assault and elite units, creating stable and defensible positions. In the absence of engineers or in high risk environments, they also dig trenches..

A specific tactic is noted by Ukrainian officers:

Assault infantry tend to advance in company strength with the support of armour and, among better Russian units, utilising a mixture of artillery systems. 152-mm howitzers fire until the assault is 400 m from the target position, after which fire is taken over by 122-mm howitzer or 120-mm mortar fire until the assault closes to its final assault positions. The final advance is covered by infantry mortars and then grenades are used before entering the target position.16 These troops tend to endeavour to turn the flank of a defensive position. On taking a position, they are often withdrawn and replaced by line infantry and additional disposable troops who set about fortifying the position so that it can be held as a base for further probing actions.

The section ends with the reluctant admittance that these forces are capable.
