NGP RaZVedka:

⚠️ News from the southern flank of Avdeevka.

This morning, in the area of the industrial zone, the crest, with the support of cannon artillery using cluster munitions, launched a counterattack and tried to dislodge our units from their occupied positions.
He had no success, was unable to advance even a meter, and several assault attempts were repulsed.

After a short break, with the onset of darkness, the crest resumed attacks with small assault groups, trying to use tactics as on the Zaporozhye front.
At the time of compiling the report, it had no success, was unable to advance in any sector, and 6 waves of attacks had already been repulsed.

No throwing of meat, no cluster munitions can budge a stubborn Russian soldier who is defending his land.

Believe and support our army, our soldiers have no equal when they feel the support of a huge country.
God is with us, brothers!

Channel Rabotyno:

Footage of objective monitoring of the defeat of Ukrainian Armed Forces positions in Pyatikhatki (Zaporozhye direction) appeared online.

We linked the video to the area and present you the results.
First of all, the video confirms the presence of Ukrainian Armed Forces forces in the village. And judging by the fairly intensive work of the artillery, there are not so few of them there.

It is also worth noting that Pyatikhatki is in fairly good condition (there are still intact buildings left).

Meatgrinder: Russian Tactics in the Second Year of Its Invasion of Ukraine
by Nagasaki Nightmare, 13 Nov 2023

Previous Parts:
I. Intro
II. Infantry

Tuesday - Combat Engineers
Welcome back to the land of the living; now pick up a shovel and start digging.
-Army of Darkness

The old joke about Russian shovels may well be an unintentional compliment to Russian Combat Engineers. RUSi starts by praising the speed, efficiency, and the scale at which Russian Engineers construct defensive lines.

It’s explained, two engineer companies are assigned to each brigade, one focused on mining and the other on force protection engineering…little methodological change [has been implemented] since the Cold War.

In certain combat situations it may be necessary for infantry to fulfill much of the obligation of constructing the second defensive line.

Defensive Lines or WtH is taking them so long?
Though much has been made of the Surovkin line, it is just a macrocosmic example of the typical Russian defensive doctrine, known as defense in depth. Each successive efensive lines consist of irregular spaced lines with a typical span of 700m to 1km, generally creating no less than 3 lines for a fully prepared defense.
* 1st: typical foxholes, infantry dug trenches, etc.
* 3rd: Entrenched positions
* Concrete firing posts where possible
* Obstacles
* 4 m deep x 6 m wide (anti-tank)
* dragon’s teeth (pyramidal concrete blocks)
* wire track entanglements (anti-armor)
* constructed for company size force
* company firing positions are wood block or ridge based cover
* depth from one line to the next generally 5 km
* 3rd: Fallback positions
* Encompasses everything from the 2nd line
* dugout positions for vehicles
* positions for reserve and elite assault units
* concrete, subterranean command posts

Why Does Russia Use Broken Lines?
Examples of where the broken lines prove most effect are in creating chokepoints and fire sacks. Both are areas in which an enemy can be drawn to concentrate, and so more effectively destroy them. But fire sacks are usually are formed with intent to permit enemy to advance to a depth where logistical and fire support becomes exceedingly difficult. The best example of a fire sack at the present time is in and around Rabotonye—which seems to be viewed by cheerleaders on both sides as a breakthrough by Ukraine.

This specific example also utlizes the tactic of hedgehog defense, but we’ll expand upon the topic on Sunday when we reach the outline of the failings in provision, use, and implementation of information provided by RUSi and NATO doctrine in general.

Just remember, if you can evidence a tactical success or failure, what you’re saying isn’t coping or dooming, so say it.

Mine Field
* Mines are irregularly dispersed and fields are unmarked
* Fields are a mixture of anti-armor (AT) and anti-personnel (AP)
* Magnetically induced AT mines are placed to initiate MLRS attacks
* Seismic sensors are often placed to trigger nearby mines.
* Known lanes in the fields are placed to allow movement in case of breakthroughs and counter-offensives
* Chokepoints and fire sacks are mined just as well

Bridges
The paper begrudgingly notes, ...the Russians have demonstrated persistent competence [in] the emplacement of bridges. Engineering corps are competent enough that Russia will sometimes destroy bridges that may need for further offensive operations if the value of disruption is approximately equal to the value of deployment. Russia has exhibited no signs of lacking in pontoon bridges.

❗️🇷🇺🇺🇦 Battle for Avdeevka: offensive of the Russian Armed Forces in the industrial zone and successes along the entire front
situation at the end of November 14, 2023

🔻Russian troops continue the operation to cover the Avdeevsky fortified area in pincers.

▪️In the north, Ukrainian formations under Russian artillery fire were forced to retreat from the village of Petrovskoye (Stepovoe) : at the moment, the settlement is in the gray zone, units of the Russian Armed Forces have secured a foothold on the eastern outskirts, expanding the zone of control along the railway track.

▪️There is also progress on the waste heap side: the Russian army has cleared the treatment facilities southeast of the ash dump of the Avdeevsky Coke and Chemical Plant. There is currently no advance from the commanding heights into the city or assault on the plant itself.

▪️Russian troops advancing from Yasinovataya managed to occupy up to 40% of the industrial zone in the southeast of Avdeevka and are now repelling attacks by Ukrainian formations on occupied lines.

▪️In the center, it was decided to inflict maximum fire damage on the Khimik microdistrict in order to raze the enemy fortified areas controlled by FABs to the ground.

▪️On the western flank there has been no advance towards Severny and Tonenkoe yet, but positional successes in the direction of Pervomaisky have nevertheless been outlined: the zone of control north of the village has been expanded, however, it is premature to talk about its imminent capture.

📍 Attention!

It’s been restless all day in Avdeevka!
Today, a large number of artillery shells, mines, and rockets flew across the city and nearby outskirts.
Aviation operated near the city.
From the south-eastern and north-western directions of the city, the sounds of military operations can be heard all day long (you can hear small arms fire and armored vehicles).

As of 19:30 Moscow time, on the near outskirts of the city of Avdeevka, very loud, several strong explosions swept through the city like a shock wave.

Mobile communications in Avdeevka (not everywhere) work intermittently.
Mobile Internet in the city is practically non-existent.

T-80BVM model 2023
by Nagasaki Nightmare, 14 Nov 2023

With the onboard Volnorez portable drone jammer system on board, the upgraded tank could be one of those game changers we always hear about. The specs on the EW system alone, up to 1 km omni-directional, wide-band jamming seem impressive.

Feature Overview
* Volnorez Drone Jaming EW System
* 1PN96MT thermal imaging sights
* Reverse now exceeds 20 km/h
* Relikt explosive reactive armor (helps protect against ATGMs and RPGs)
* More sophisticated targeting system

NOTE: I'm not a tank head. I've tried to hit highlights of the article, but in places its unclear to me what's different between this and the 2017 model, but the optics and EW are for sure upgrades.

To paraphrase an old Scottish punk band, Tanks not dead!

The Story of A Tank Crew From One of Their Own: Part II

We went out, the platoon commander lit a cigarette, we looked at each other, but didn’t say anything to each other. We jumped on the wheels and drove to the position in silence. We left. We exchanged thoughts on how to do it better, and who would work from where. They decided everything and went back to their crews. My guys and I prepared the equipment at night. We overloaded the BC purely for fragments. I explained to everyone during the process what would happen and what our task was. After all, the infantry has no one to rely on except us - we are their unbreakable support. Having finished, we tried to rest a little.

The next very early morning we rolled out into position.

I don’t like aiming in the dark: it’s really difficult and easy to make a mistake. But there is no choice. And we did it. There were many problems that morning - we couldn’t look up, the enemy’s electronic warfare was in the way. But the guys are professionals in their field and found a way. Without them there will be no accurate work.

During the work process, the second elephant caught long ones several times, which did not allow him to work at full strength. The guys rolled away. Sometimes technology fails. You can't foresee this. So all the responsibility fell on my sergeant's shoulders. I don’t think I lost the honor of the battalion. Helped the guys. All firing points in front of the advancing infantry were destroyed, as well as part of the manpower.

Good luck to everyone from the SOYUZ crew

The Story of A Tank Crew From One of Their Own: Part I

Our armor is strong, and our tanks are fast...

It all started in earnest one day before...

The battalion commander pulled me and the platoon commander away. He said that there was important work ahead. The infantry is coming tomorrow. Nothing heavy, guys, take it lightly. Our task is support. The exit is directly dangerous, which is why they called us. We are working from closed firing positions, all hope is on us. Of course, he marked everything on the map, we scored points in Alpina, and he gave instructions.
