The Washington Post notes that Ukrainians are being sent to their deaths on the left bank for politics. Again we've seen similar articles in the BBC, NYT, and Kiev Independent but today's article notes:

With their counteroffensive stalled, Ukraine’s military and political leaders were eager to show their Western backers some progress — any progress.

But the 21-year-old marine, Dmytro — who is being identified only by his first name in keeping with Ukrainian military rules — recounted fording a river of death for little reward, aside from some political messaging.

Dmytro described being “tossed like a piece of meat to the wolves” during the crossing, which takes 30 minutes to an hour. His account was corroborated by six others involved in the operation to lodge a toehold on the river’s Russian-occupied east bank.

“We bear many losses,” said another marine, 22. “We simply lose people, but there is no result.”

Frustrated by reports from Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Ministry — which in November stated that it had “managed to consolidate positions on several strongholds” on the Dnieper River — the marines recounted wounded soldiers drowning, unable to swim with their injuries or sucked to the river bottom by their heavy packs. The crossing was so dangerous that the bodies of some marines, killed in the first wave to cross the river two months ago, were left behind.
- Day 1
The shelling began almost immediately.

Communication failed, Dmytro said, and the pair could not contact their mortar team to strike back. On the Ukraine Control map — which pins the location of video-recorded missile strikes — the river is clotted with dots corroborating accounts of heavy fire.

By 8 a.m., only 12 of 30 marines were uninjured. Two died.

Soviet Film School
Иван Васильевич менят профессию (1973)

Ivan Vasilyevich Changes Professions Other
Watch on YouTube (eng sub)

Ivan the Terrible...
more like Ivan the Hilarious
...

This movie is what you might get by replacing BIll and Ted with two grown comedic actors—one who bears a strikingly resemblance to Tsar Ivan IV Vasilyevich—add Back to the Future and go back in time to 1970s Moscow to film it.

The titular character is played by Yury Yakovlev, who is a dead ringer for John Cleese, and also plays in my favorite Russian film, Kin-Dza-Dza! He plays the role of both Ivan the Terrible and modern day Ivan the Annoying. Alexander Demyanenko reprises his role as Shurik for the last time, here as the inventor of the time.

Right now, I'm sitting here on my back stoop, typing this in 0 degree weather, dragging on a Camel. Why do I mention this? Because I'm also thinking about a character in the movie who pulls out a pack of Marlboros at the exact right comedic moment. He's the Soviet Marlboro Man.

The character I call Мальборо Мэн dresses as a Russian prince after getting stuck in the 16th century. He's dancing there in a hall full of music, food, and beautiful women. I'm alone, the sun is setting, my fingers are burning enough to remind to go in soon.

But ya know what? I'll keep my stoop and Camels. Besides who wants to live in the 16th century? Even if they do have eggplant caviar. How would I ever get to my third divorce with nothing but a bunch of chaste maidens walking around?

If in Operation Y Natalya Igorevna is "radiant", Natalya Seleznyova is stunning. She plays Zinaida, an actress who dreams of being a Soviet starlet, Luckily, she's only been divorced three times and is preparing to leave Shurik for her director, who has promised he will leave his wife...honestly.

This is my favorite of the Shurik trilogy. That may make me a blasphemer in Russia; I'm not sure. But if I start running please use the time machine to open a portal in your wall before the Tsar's men kill me.

A common situation in Kiev: a young man with neo-Nazi symbols is asked whether it is acceptable to install a Jewish menorah in the city center.

State Dept's Matt Miller: “It is for the Pakistani people to choose their government.”

Ryan Grim: “Not only is the former prime minister in jail but you’re also seeing something extraordinary: members of his party are filing for office and are being arrested and abducted at the filing office… How can the Pakistani people choose their government if there are not candidates to choose from?”
...
Miller: “We want to see free and fair elections that are conducted in accordance with Pakistan’s laws. It’s not for the U.S. to dictate to Pakistan the exact specifics of how it conducts its elections…We will continue to support democratic suppression."

Matt Lee: “You just said you will continue to support democratic suppression.”

Miller: "I said expression, expression.”

🤣 I think you actually said what you meant.

"The defeat of the West is not a victory for Russia. The West is destroying itself..."

Historian and demographer Emmanuel Todd, who predicted the collapse of the USSR in his book “The Final Collapse” back in 1976, this time predicted the defeat of the West and said that humanity is on the eve of changing the world.

The main reason for the impending defeat of the West, according to Todd, was “the evaporation of Protestantism, which led to the disappearance of what constituted the strength and specificity of the West.”

South Korea announced an evacuation from the island of Yeonpyeongdo in the Yellow Sea (home to over 2 thousand people).

“We received a message from the military about the situation related to the provocation from North Korea, after which we announced the evacuation,” said a representative of the local administration.

Today, South Korean Marine Corps exercises were to take place in the area of the island.

Civilians and military personnel in South Korea were not injured as a result of the “provocation” by the DPRK, there was no damage, the shells fell north of the de facto inter-Korean maritime border, writes Yonhap

-It seems South Korea was training it's marines into NATO compliance of how to retreat before accomplishing anything.

Basically North Korea just did some artillery drills, which South Korea itself was planning to do.

Residents of South Korea’s front-line island of Yeonpyeong say the South Korean military has asked them to evacuate because it plans to launch firing drills later Friday. (AP)

- Not in response to North Korean artillery drills.

If South Korea is complaining because North Korea did some artillery drills that itself is planning to do, I think this is much ado about nothing.

Study: Only two NATO countries in Europe spend 2% of GDP on defense without damaging public finances

Of all European NATO members, only Estonia and Lithuania managed to achieve the 2023 defense spending target of 2% of GDP while maintaining a “sustainable” position in public finances. Experts from the German Institute for Economic Research (Ifo) came to this conclusion.

In addition to Estonia and Lithuania, seven European NATO members (Latvia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia) achieved defense spending levels of 2% of GDP, but their macro-financial position did not meet the Maachtricht criteria: either public debt exceeded 60% of GDP , or the budget deficit was above 3% of GDP. A similar situation was observed in Great Britain.

Vucic did not live up to Biden's hopes, Serbia remains close to Russia - The Washington Post

The Joe Biden administration’s bet on the “authoritarian” Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic, whom the current US leadership considered capable of gradually pulling Serbia out of Russia’s zone of influence, apparently did not materialize.
Vucic continues to assure Western partners that he is doing everything possible for the country to join the European Union, but his government maintains close ties with Moscow, The Washington Post states in its editorial.

This was once again evident following the results of recent opposition protests against, as its representatives claimed, “massive” violations in the early elections held on December 17. When the protesters were dispersed, Vučić said that the protests were actually an attempt to overthrow the government and accused the West of supporting such destabilization. And his Prime Minister Ana Brnabic directly thanked the Russian intelligence services for warning Belgrade about the impending Maidan-style coup attempt.

Vučić is one of the most skillful politicians in the Balkans, and he has always been able to find a balance between Russia and Western countries. Meanwhile, although the Biden administration, wanting to test the Serbian leader, has so far avoided harsh rhetoric against Belgrade, Vučić repaid it by continuing to engage in “tightrope walks.” For example, he never imposed sanctions on Russia after the start of the operation in Ukraine.

Now Vučić is likely to swear to Western leaders behind closed doors that he is still on their side and that his statements are nothing more than “window dressing.” However, given how poorly Biden’s reconciliation policy has worked, it may be time for Washington to think about “trying something new,” American journalists conclude.
