Yesterday's ICJ ruling was in my opinion a big nothing, despite a mountain of damning evidence of Israel's violations of the articles of genocide. Despite its clear acknowledgement of large scale loss of life and humanitarian disaster that has befallen the people of Gaza. Despite acknowledging that the ongoing human catastrophe is a direct result of Israeli military action.

After citing all that evidence, all the proof of genocide being committed, all they were able to say was "we think Israel probably shouldn't do those things, and we give them 1 month to not do those things, though we haven't yet decided whether or not they are actually doing those things". This "ruling on provisional measures", contained no actual measures giving relief to the beleaguered population of Gaza.

The provisional measures called for by the ICJ are in effect nothing more than a polite request for Israel to please refrain from committing genocide. The ICJ did not demand a cease fire. It did not demand that Israel stop aerial bombing and demolition of civilian population centers.

One could argue that the ICJ ruling sets the stage for compulsion of Israel to eventually, some day comply with the genocide convention to which it is a signatory, and that Israel being held accountable for its actions in this way is unprecedented. These are true facts and it's about time. But the ICJ ruling failed to address the immediate, urgent needs of Palestinians in Gaza.

From a legal perspective, the ICJ didn't even go as far as saying that Israel *might* be charged with genocide in the future. The heaviest legal assertion made by the ICJ was to recognise the existence of a disagreement between South Africa and Israel, and the court's "prima facie" jurisdiction on the matter.

The ICJ ruling is just one more event which exposes the irrelevance, the bias, and colonialist nature of so-called global institutions which are actually Western institutions of global control. All the evidence which South Africa presented to the ICJ, all the evidence they presented as proof of genocide being committed by Israel - all that evidence is now an indictment of the ICJ, and of the collective West.

In short, the enemy can successfully defend Avdeyevka as long as he supplies its garrison. We are talking about supply along the Orlovka-Lastochkino-Avdeyevka line. These connections are, in turn, reinforced by the Tonenkoye-Severnoye-Pervomaiskoye line. As long as the enemy is able to supply Avdeyevka through these connections, he will (regardless of anything) throw resources there. This is precisely his favorite tactic - to turn populated areas into fortresses in order to inflict as many losses on us as possible.
But today, the Battle of Avdeyevka has truly entered a decisive stage.

The mp said that his colleagues from the "Servant of the People" were bought by the Russians to collapse the parliament and eventually lead Ukraine to a defeat in the war and loss of statehood.

To this end, 17 MPs from the pro-presidential party decided to resign their mandates in order to collapse parliament and the country as a whole from within.

"We have a parliamentary-presidential republic. Therefore, the disintegration of parliament will lead to losing the war and to the loss of statehood in general," Tishchenko said.

Earlier, the leader of the SN faction in parliament, David Arahamiya, said that 17 MPs from the Servants of the People want to resign their mandates.

Ugledar currently. I hate to see the name of that place after that terrible offensive. I should note marines fought well but the plan was terrible.

It was actually quite intact when they were launching that offensive. Sadly to ever take such a place it will have to be pummelled into dust as Ukraine always like to hide behind civilians.

Sergey Vakulenko, formerly of Gazprom and Shell, is an oil and gas expert whose work I trust (I have spent time working in this industry) wrote an interesting piece on Russian refineries, which as you all know have been subject to attacks by Ukrainian drones.

Russian oil refineries rarely generate much news. Yet since the start of 2024, they have barely left the front pages: first, there was an accident at Lukoil’s Kstovo refinery; then successful Ukrainian attacks on refineries in Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea, and Tuapse on the Black Sea. These incidents garnered so much media attention because they pose major questions about how well Russia’s energy industry is coping with the pressures of wartime.

On one hand, the additional income Russia receives from exporting the products made by its refineries instead of the oil they are made from, is relatively insignificant compared to what it makes from selling the crude oil. Ironically, Russia’s tax system means that the state loses money if energy companies export oil products instead of crude oil.

The two refineries attacked by Ukraine in January are export-oriented, and do not play a major role in the domestic market. However, if small drones with no more than 5 kilograms of explosives managed to reach Ust-Luga, which is 620 miles from Ukrainian territory, this means there are a total of eighteen Russian refineries with a combined capacity of 3.5 million barrels per day (more than half the Russian total) that are possible targets.

In the mind of a non-expert, a refinery full of highly flammable liquids can easily turn into a huge fireball. The reality is different. Russian construction codes—a relic of the Cold War—make refineries resilient against traditional air bombing. And they usually have plenty of firefighting equipment available. This means drones cannot destroy a whole refinery. They can, however, create a fire. And if they are lucky, managing to hit a gas fractionation unit, they may even be able to cause a bigger explosion.

After both the recent attacks, resulting fires were extinguished within a few hours, and the damage was successfully contained. It’s likely that the Ust-Luga and Tuapse refineries will be able to immediately resume operations, albeit with reduced throughput and limited product slate. Under normal circumstances, a full repair would be expected to take no more than a couple of months.

Though on the negative side (he now works for a US think tank so there has to be a negative angle...) he notes that while there are Russian or Chinese analogues to the parts and equipment that sanctions can delay getting the original western parts, so a repair that could be fixed in weeks might take months. This is due to regulations requiring plants are "fixed according to the service manuals of the original manufacturers, and using original part." This is only an issue I should note if there was some dumb luck in hitting something important.

1. From the beginning of the SMO to December 2023, the United States supplied Ukraine with more than 2 million 155-mm shells

2. At the beginning of the SMO, the price of the projectile was $1,200, but now in America it is $8,400

3. From October to December inclusive, America supplied Israel with 57 thousand 155-mm shells

4. At the beginning of the SMO, the United States produced 14 thousand shells per month, and they want to increase it to 80 thousand by 2025. Considering that instead of investing, the military-industrial complex corporations are sawing profits, now it comes out to 28 thousand a month, as journalists say.
And the Americans themselves, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Israel need them.

Production volumes in Europe are not named, but it is indicated that they are significantly less than the US

5. Russia fires 10.000-30.000 shells per day.

The idea, they say, is that by the end of 2024, Ukraine will be stronger than at the beginning.
In fact - and this is indicated by the publication almost directly - Kiev was told to copy Russia’s strategy of the end of 2022-autumn 2023 in the Western sense and without the Bakhmut meat grinder - so that now the Ukrainians would mold their “Surovikin lines”.
