US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin: US emphasizes to Ukrainians importance of weapons not falling in wrong hands

Russia’s Ministry of Defence has analysed the activities of the biological and veterinary laboratories in Mariupol:

Mariupol was used as a regional centre for the collection and certification of the cholera pathogen, when the city was under Ukrainian control;

According to documents, strains were being sent to the Public Health Centre in Kiev, then the biomaterials were transmitted to the United States. This activity had been carried out since 2014;

Almost the whole collection of pathogens was destroyed on 25 February 2022, but part of it (124 strains) was later taken to a safe storage by Russian specialists;

Typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, and gas gangrene pathogens are not typical of veterinary medicine, but they are in the collection. This may indicate the participation of the laboratory in a military biological programme;

The Russian MoD is examining material received from the Mariupol biolaboratories and will inform the public about the results soon

💊 US overdose deaths hit record 107,000 last year

The provisional 2021 total translates to roughly one US overdose death every 5 minutes. It marked a 15% increase from the previous record, set the year before.

The White House issued a statement calling the accelerating pace of overdose deaths “unacceptable” and promoting its recently announced national drug control strategy. It calls for measures like connecting more people to treatment, disrupting drug trafficking and expanding access to the overdose-reversing medication naloxone.

Last year, overdoses involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids surpassed 71,000, up 23% from the year before. There also was a 23% increase in deaths involving cocaine and a 34% increase in deaths involving meth and other stimulants.

🗳 Trump candidate loses in Nebraska, wins in West Virginia

Jim Pillen, a hog farm owner and veterinarian, defeated eight challengers, including Charles Herbster, a businessman who faced groping allegations late in the campaign, and Brett Lindstrom, a state senator and Omaha financial adviser who was generally viewed as a more moderate choice.

While Trump-endorsed candidates won primary races in West Virginia for the US House on Tuesday, the statewide loss in Nebraska was a setback for Trump. He has issued hundreds of endorsements and staged his signature campaign-style rallies in support of his preferred candidates, including Herbster, all in an effort to bend the GOP in his direction ahead of another possible presidential run in 2024.

In this Republican stronghold, Pillen will be a favorite in November’s general election against his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Carol Blood. Nebraska hasn’t elected a Democrat as governor since 1994.

☠️ US finds 500 Native American boarding school deaths to date

A first-of-its-kind federal study of Native American boarding schools that for over a century sought to assimilate Indigenous children into white society has identified more than 500 student deaths at the institutions so far, but officials say that figure could grow exponentially as research continues.

The Interior Department report released Wednesday expands to more than 400 the number of schools that were known to have operated across the US for 150 years, starting in the early 19th century and coinciding with the removal of many tribes from their ancestral lands.

Officials say causes included illness, accidental injuries and abuse. It has so far identified at least 53 burial sites at or near boarding schools.
