🚨 3 fatally shot at Iowa state park

Three family members were shot to death while camping in a state park in eastern Iowa Friday, and the suspected gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Officers found three people fatally shot in a tent on the campground, division assistant director Mitch Mortvedt said.

Officials immediately evacuated everyone from the park, a children’s summer camp on the grounds and the campground. Once the evacuation was complete, the only registered camper not accounted for was 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin, Mortvedt said.

Using a plane to help search the area, law enforcement later found Sherwin dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a wooded area of the park. The three victims were related, Mortvedt said

🚫 Mayors ask Biden to help with influx of asylum-seekers

The Democratic mayors of New York and Washington are asking the Biden administration to help with what they say is a surge in their cities of asylum-seeking migrants from border states, eliciting gleeful reactions from Republicans who say the pleas are evidence the US is in an immigration crisis.

About 5,200 migrants have been bused from Texas since April and more than 1,100 from Arizona since May. The governors call the practice a voluntary free ride that gets migrants closer to family or support networks.

The Border Patrol stopped migrants nearly 193,000 times in June, the first decline after four straight monthly increases. Texas has spent more than $3 billion in state funds on a massive security apparatus, without stemming the flow of migrants.

📲 T-Mobile agrees to $350 million settlement over its massive 2021 data breach

T-Mobile has agreed to pay $500 million to settle a class-action lawsuit stemming from the 2021 hack that it says exposed around 76.6 million US residents’ data. According to the proposed agreement filled on Friday, which you can read in full below, T-Mobile will put $350 million into a settlement fund to go to lawyers, fees, and, of course, to people who file claims. It’ll also be obligated to spend $150 million on “data security and related technology” during 2022 and 2023, in addition to what it had already budgeted for.

According to the settlement, that covers “the approximately 76.6 million US residents identified by T- Mobile whose information was compromised in the Data Breach.” The settlement agreement doesn’t contain estimates on how much each claimant can expect to receive, though it’s difficult to estimate that kind of thing until it’s clear how many people will make claims.

📡 US and UK joint data access agreement goes into effect on October 3

The US and UK have signed a Data Access Agreement that will allow law enforcement agencies in each country to request user internet data from the other, the Department of Justice and UK Home Office said in a joint release. The agreement was created in 2019 as the CLOUD Act to allow the nations to fight serious crimes including terrorism, child abuse and cybercrime.

Both agencies promise to "maintain the strong oversight and protections that our citizens enjoy," and not compromise or erode human rights. When the law was originally drafted, however, the Electronic Frontier Foundation called it "a dangerous expansion of police snooping on cross-border data."

📹 Ukrainian neo-Nazis continue scattering the PFM-1 landmines - known as 'Butterfly' mines - this time in the direction of Kharkov.

These dangerous weapons which are designed primarily to maim and kill civilians, have been scattered along the Russian border, near the village of Izbitskoye.

The 'Butterfly' is a small and easily concealed land mine that can disable anyone who steps on it. In Lisichansk, dozens of townspeople have been maimed by PFM-1 mines scattered by the Ukrainian armed forces.

It is worth remembering that Ukraine is a signatory of the Additional Protocols to the Geneva Convention and the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel mines back in 1997, and then repeatedly reported it was disposing its PFM-1 stockpiles.

As we can now see from the situation in the Special Military Operation zone, the military and political leadership of Ukraine has lied about having destroyed these weapons and use them, primarily against civilians
