📝More than 80% of Harvard faculty identifies as liberal, survey finds

American universities face heavy criticism from conservatives who say the institutions are stifling free speech and promoting progressive ideas.

The Harvard Crimson, the Ivy League school’s student newspaper, released its annual survey of the faculty of arts and sciences in April, revealing that more than 80% of Harvard faculty respondents characterized their political leanings as liberal or very liberal, while only 1% of respondents stated they are conservative and no respondents identified as very conservative.

YouGov, a global public opinion and data company, surveyed more than 22,000 Americans about how a college education affects a person’s political ideology. Most college graduates say college makes people more liberal.

📊 A plurality of Americans believe the level of immigration into the US should decrease, according to a new Gallup poll — the first time the survey has shown that in eight years.

▪️ The poll found that 38% of Americans want less immigration, while 27% said they want more. Another 31% said they want immigration to remain at its current level.

▪️ The last time more Americans wanted immigration reduced was in 2014, when 41% held that opinion, 33% said they wanted present levels maintained, and just 22% said they wanted immigration levels increased.

🥴 President Joe Biden was criticized on Twitter on Monday for appearing to admit that he does not know what is in the Inflation Reduction Act, legislation that his administration championed.

🗯 "What we're doing today, what we passed yesterday, helping to take care of everything from health care to God knows what else," Biden said during a speech in Kentucky after touring the state's flood damage.

❗️ The legislation, which passed the Senate on Sunday on a party-line vote with Vice President Kamala Harris acting as the tiebreaker, will increase taxes for nearly all Americans while adding 87,000 IRS agents and actually increase inflation in its first years, according to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Budget Model.

😮 Two Muslim men have filed a federal discrimination suit against Alaska Airlines for being removed from a plane prior to takeoff after a passenger alerted the crew that the men were texting and speaking in Arabic.

▪️ According to a complaint filed last week in federal district court, the plaintiffs, Abobakkr Dirar and Mohamed Elamin, allege they boarded a flight from Seattle to San Francisco on February 17, 2020, and after being seated in their first-class seats, they started speaking and texting in Arabic. Another passenger, who did not speak Arabic, according to the complaint, saw some of Dirar's text messages and told the crew, who then removed Dirar and Elamin from the flight due to what they claimed to be a "ticket issue."

❗️ The Biden administration moved on Monday to suspend the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" policy.

▪️ US District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk earlier on Monday lifted an injunction that required the Department of Homeland Security to resume the policy, formally called Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).

▪️ In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it had stopped placing migrants in the Migrant Protection Protocols, a policy colloquially known as "Remain-in-Mexico." It also said it would process migrants already enrolled in the program, and allow them to continue their asylum cases inside the US.

😮 An Alabama boy admitted that he accidentally shot his mother to death after having initially fabricated a story about how she died, authorities said Monday.

▪️ The family of the 12-year-old boy, who has not been publicly identified, was cooperating with authorities, and his case will be processed in the family court system, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

▪️ The victim was identified as Ayobiyi Cook, 29, the sheriff's office said.

▪️ The shooting occurred just after midnight on Saturday in Forestdale, just north of Birmingham.

▪️ In an initial statement, the sheriff's office said a man was seen fleeing from the house where Cook's body was found shortly before someone called 911. There appeared to be no forced entry, the initial statement said.

🇯🇵 On this day, on August 9, 1945, another atomic bomb was detonated by the US over Nagasaki, after the first bombing took place three days earlier, in Hiroshima.

🔻Nagasaki was hit by a bomb with the codename “Fat Man”, which was even more powerful than the bomb dropped over Hiroshima. The bombing resulted in more than 73,000 fatalities and 35,000 more died due to wounds and long-term health effects.

🔻 The original target of the second atomic bomb was Kokura, which had a larger population and some major military facilities. On arriving at the target, the US plane found the city obscured by clouds and turned south to its secondary target: Nagasaki.

🔻Decades later, the US remains committed to the claim that the bombings were necessary and justified to make Japan surrender, though it was essentially defeated before the bombs were dropped. Historians agree that Americans essentially employed atomic weapons to flex their muscles in order to intimidate the Soviet Union.

🖥 A group of US defense experts and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) conducted a simulation of a hypothetical Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The experts believe that Taiwan will be able to repel the invasion, but China will sink most of the United States and Japan’s surface fleets.

🗯 "The results are showing that under most — though not all — scenarios, Taiwan can repel an invasion," CSIS Senior Adviser Mark Cancian said, as quoted in the report.

▪️ The experts conducted 22 rounds of simulation and in 18 of them, Chinese missiles were able to sink a significant part of the US and Japanese surface ships and destroyed hundreds of aircraft, according to Cancian.

♨️ The UK is braced for drought conditions to last until October, with rivers forecast to be low and exceptionally low in central and southern England, according to the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

"Game-changing for ordinary folks": US President Joe Biden touted that the Inflation Reduction Act will have a big impact on US families.

“When you sit down at that kitchen table at the end of the month, you’re going to be able to pay a whole hell of a lot more bills because you’re paying less in medical bills.”

While the US president apparently tried to praise the bill, the phrasing he used had an unintended effect on the public.

"What we're doing today, what we passed yesterday, helping to take care of everything from health care to God knows what else," Biden said earlier on Monday.
