🔹A California resident with a weakened immune system has died from monkeypox, marking the first US fatality from the virus.

The Los Angeles County patient was "severely immunocompromised" and "had been hospitalized," the Los Angeles Public Health Department said in a statement Monday. The death was confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the statement added. No further information on the patient was released due to privacy concerns.

"Those with severe immunocompromise are less able to control the viral spread and are susceptible to mortality from the infection," Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert with the University of California San Francisco, told media reports.

😷🙃The world has “never been in a better position to end the pandemic,” Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, said at a Wednesday press briefing, speaking on the subject of daily global deaths from COVID-19 sitting close to record lows.

Worldwide, new cases of COVID-19 decreased by nearly a third last week compared to the previous week—to 3.1 million cases, WHO officials said Wednesday. A decrease in cases was reported in all six WHO regions, including the Americas, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Deaths also dropped—by 22% week over week, with just over 11,000 fatalities reported. COVID deaths reported last week were at the lowest level the world has seen since March 2020, mere months into the pandemic, Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

🚙President Joe Biden, a “car guy” with his own vintage Corvette, showcased his administration’s efforts to promote electric vehicles during a visit Wednesday to the Detroit auto show.

Biden traveled to the massive North American International Auto Show to plug the huge new climate, tax, and health care law that offers tax incentives for buying electric vehicles. He toured a mix of American-manufactured hybrid, electric, and combustion vehicles from Chevrolet, General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis on a closed-off convention center floor. He greeted union workers, CEOs, and local leaders.

“You all know I’m a car guy,” Biden told a roaring crowd of autoworkers, adding that cars “just give me a sense of optimism — although I like the speed too.”

🔻On Wednesday, Illinois Governor Jay Robert "J.B." Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation to enhance efforts to adequately respond to the hundreds of undocumented migrants arriving in Chicago from Texas.

"Governor J.B. Pritzker today issued an emergency disaster proclamation and activated approximately 75 members of the Illinois National Guard to ensure all state resources are available to support asylum seekers arriving nearly daily to Chicago from the State of Texas," the Office of the Governor said in a press release.

The release said more than 500 asylum-seeking migrants have arrived in Chicago since August 31, and buses carrying migrants are arriving nearly every day.

Last week, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency in the U.S. capital due to the arrival of thousands of undocumented migrants being bused to the area from Texas and Arizona.

▪️R&B singer R. Kelly was found guilty on Wednesday on multiple charges of child pornography and luring underage girls to have sex with him but not guilty of obstructing a 2008 state case that ended with his acquittal.

In his latest trial, Kelly - whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly was found guilty by a jury on six out of 13 counts, prosecutors said.

He was found guilty of three child pornography counts and three counts of enticing minors for sex but acquitted of seven other charges that included obstruction of justice and conspiracy to receive child pornography.

In Chicago, a conviction of just one count of child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years. The jury's verdict in U.S. District Court in Chicago came after jurors deliberated for 11 hours over two days.
