NATO began planning to increase its presence along its eastern flank “years” before Russia kicked off its special military operation in Ukraine, NATO Military Committee Chairman Rob Bauer has revealed

💬 “We’re talking about the biggest overhaul of our military structures since 1949. The planning for that started several years ago, but now we’re implementing it,” Bauer said, speaking to reporters at a press conference at the NATO Military Committee Conference in Tallinn, Estonia on Saturday.

📌 NATO underwent several waves of expansion between 1999 and 2020. The expansion took place despite former US Secretary of State James Baker’s verbal promise to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 not to expand the alliance “one inch” east of the former East Germany following that country’s incorporation into the German Federal Republic.

🖼 New York museums to disclose artwork looted by Nazis

Museums in New York that exhibit artworks looted by Nazis during the Holocaust are now required by law to let the public know about those dark chapters in their provenance through placards displayed with the stolen objects. At least 600,000 pieces of art were looted from Jewish people before and during World War II.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, said it had identified 53 works in its collection as having been seized or sold under duress. All of those objects were obtained by the museum after being returned to their rightful owners.

🚙Uber says ‘no evidence’ user accounts were compromised in hack

The hack, which was discovered Thursday, forced the company to take several of its internal systems offline, including Slack, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud Platform. Uber is continuing to investigate how a hacker, who claims to be 18 years old, was able to gain administrator access to the company’s internal tools.

Hackers used stolen credentials to access a private source code repository and obtain a proprietary access key, which they then used to access and copy large quantities of data associated with Uber’s users and drivers, including 57 million user records with 600,000 driver’s license numbers.

🔌 Crypto mining out of control in Biden administration.

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) published a report of the US crypto mining. The industry operations in the US pump out about as much greenhouse gas pollution annually as all the diesel fuel used on railroads, 25 to 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This amount of electricity is similar to all of the computer usage or all the residential lighting.

Under the Paris agreement, the US has committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent from peak levels by 2030. At this rate of growth, meeting the objectives of the agreement is further and further away.

🍻 Germany’s Oktoberfest opens after 2-year hiatus

The Oktoberfest has typically drawn about 6 million visitors every year to packed festival grounds in Bavaria’s capital. They will need significantly deeper pockets than at the last Oktoberfest, with brewers and visitors facing pressure from inflation. A 1-liter (2-pint) mug of beer costs between 12.60 and 13.80 euros this year, which is an increase of about 15% compared with 2019.

Brewing equipment is often fueled by natural gas, and prices for barley malt - or grain that has been allowed to germinate by moistening it - have more than doubled, to over 600 euros a ton. Glass bottles have risen by 80%, as glassmakers pay more for energy. Bottle caps are up 60%, and even glue for labels is in short supply. Inflation hit an annual 7.9% in Germany in August, and a record 9.1% in the 19 countries that use the euro currency.

▪️ Former President Donald Trump took the stage at the Save America rally in Youngstown on Saturday.

🗣 Ex-POTUS, while delivering remarks in support of Republican Senate Candidate J.D. Vance, said that the Germans could "be left without a country" due to the reduction in Russian energy supplies.

▪️ According to him, he had long warned Germany about such a threat, and even somehow gave Merkel a white flag to "surrender" to Russia.

🤔 Among other things, Donald Trump said President Biden was emptying the strategic oil reserve in an attempt to bring down fuel prices as much as possible ahead of the fall election, and predicted that with the end of the electoral season, gasoline prices will rise sharply again.
