🚙 BMW investing $1.7B in S Carolina as automaker shifts to EVs

BMW will invest $1 billion in its sprawling factory near Spartanburg, South Carolina, to start producing electric vehicles and an additional $700 million to build a electric-battery plant nearby.

The German automaker’s announcement Wednesday reflects its commitment to transitioning to electric-vehicle production in North America, in line with similarly ambitious plans by other major automakers.

The investment in the 7-million-square-foot vehicle factory, would add an unspecified number of jobs to the more than 11,000 workers there. The battery plant, to be built in nearby Woodruff, will employ 300, the company said, with hiring to begin within a few years. In addition, BMW said it has signed a deal with Envision AESC of Japan to supply battery cells for a new class of at least six electric SUVs that will be built at the plant in Greer by 2030.

💉 Cancer vaccine may be ready by 2030

Professor Ozlem Tureci and her husband, professor Ugur Sahin, with whom she cofounded the German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, said in an interview that they thought cancer vaccines could be widely available "before 2030."

The husband-and-wife duo founded BioNTech in 2008 originally to develop and produce treatments for individualized cancer immunotherapy, using mRNA technology. But when the pandemic hit, they adapted this technology to create one of the first and most effective COVID-19 vaccines with Pfizer.

In this recent interview, the two professors explained that their experience of developing the COVID vaccine could help accelerate their work on a cancer vaccine as it launched the mRNA technology into the mainstream. Many other pharmaceutical companies, including vaccine-maker Moderna, are also working on mRNA vaccines to target specific cancers.

🦠 Florida sees rise in flesh-eating bacteria amid Ian concerns

Florida has seen an increase in cases of flesh-eating bacteria this year driven largely by a surge in the county hit hardest by Hurricane Ian. The state Department of Health reports that as of Friday there have been 65 cases of vibrio vulnificus infections and 11 deaths in Florida this year. That compares with 34 cases and 10 deaths reported during all of 2021.

In Lee County, where Ian stormed ashore last month, the health department reports 29 cases this year and four deaths. The advisory said that people with open wounds, cuts, or scratches can be exposed to the bacteria through contact with sea water or brackish water. People with open wounds should avoid such water and seek medical care immediately if an infection is apparent.

😡 Russian sailors are hated, discriminated against and treated badly by both authorities and their colleagues around the world, the Danish trade magazine Lederne Søfart reported.

▪️ Carsten Ostenfeldt, who has a top position in the large international ship management company Anglo-Eastern, told the magazine that Russians are directly harassed during port calls, as the authorities, for instance, may spend up to six hours looking through their passports and papers.

💬 “Our Russian sailors are solid people who have been with us for many years, but we are in a situation where having Russian crew on board can cause major problems in ports”, Ostenfeldt said.

▪️ Since the start of Moscow's special operation in Ukraine, Russians in Europe and the West in general have been slapped with sanctions and faced discrimination, hostility and humiliation, including violent attacks — a process facilitated by lopsided media coverage and prejudiced political framing.

🇬🇧 UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s resignation, Chief Whip Wendy Morton’s attempt to step down and a Tory MP revolt over fracking have prompted new speculation among Conservative lawmakers that under-fire Prime Minister Liz Truss could be forced out of No 10 “within weeks or even days”, according to the British news outlet.

▪️ The outlet quoted an unnamed senior backbencher as saying that “this is the beginning of the end” for Truss. According to the source, “she [the PM] will be gone by Christmas, if not before.”

▪️ The insider was echoed by former Brexit adviser David Frost, who wrote in the article for The Telegraph that the UK Prime Minister “just can’t stay in office.”

🕐 UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has just "12 hours" to save her position amid growing tensions over what appeared to be ill-conceived economic reforms, according to a Tory member of parliament.

🗣 Tory MP Simon Hoare has argued that if the Prime Minister was given a "career review" today then "the score sheet isn't looking very good" and she does not have long to turn things around.

🤔 The comment comes as pressure on Truss over widely-criticized economic changes continues to grow, with Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and Home Secretary Suella Braverman already leaving the just over six-week-old government.

❗️ Moscow: EU mission for military assistance to Ukraine increases involvement of Europe in the conflict

▪️ The deployment outside Ukraine of a training mission for the Ukrainian military and military assistance provided by EU countries to Kiev increases the involvement of the European Union in the conflict in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

💬 "This step is on a par with the supply of lethal weapons to the Kiev regime, and qualitatively increases the involvement of the EU, making it, of course, a party to the conflict," Zakharova said at a briefing.
