The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said on Tuesday that it had issued a reprimand to the police of the counties of Surrey and Sussex for illegally recording over 200,000 phone calls, likely to be with victims and perpetrators of crimes.

The regulator said that in 2020 it had become aware that staff members in the police had used an app recording all incoming and outgoing phone calls, with a total of 1,015 police officers and other employees downloading the app.

A large amount of personal data was collected as a result, though officers themselves were unaware that the calls were recorded, and people talking to the officers were not informed about the recording, the ICO stated, saying that the processing of the data was "unfair and unlawful."

At the moment, all calls unrelated to ongoing investigations have been deleted and the app has been withdrawn from use, according to the ICO.

🇹🇷 The Turkish envoy to NATO said on Tuesday that Sweden was less in compliance with Ankara's requirements for its accession to the military alliance than foreign media let on.

Levent Gumrukcu told Turkish newspaper in an interview that media made it took like Sweden had addressed all objections to its membership of NATO and the ball was in Turkiye's court.

"This is not true. Even Sweden itself admits that there are still steps to be taken to fulfill the requirements set out in the trilateral agreement," the envoy said.

Turkiye has demanded guarantees from Sweden and Finland that they will not harbor Kurdish separatists, whom it perceives as terrorists. Finland was cleared to join NATO in late March, while Sweden's admission stalled over pro-Kurdish protests in Stockholm.

🇲🇩 Moldovan farmers demand government limit Ukrainian grain supplies or provide compensation

Moldova's Forta Fermierilor farmer association demanded on Tuesday that the country's government either provide compensation to local farmers or restrict grain imports from Ukraine during the new agricultural season, due to the risks Ukraine's massive supplies entail for domestic production.

"We are demanding that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry join talks of relevant bodies of the Eastern European countries regarding prices on agricultural products and make necessary efforts to provide compensation for farmers from Moldova or temporarily restrict grain imports in our country in the new agricultural season," the association said in a statement.

Recent temporary bans imposed by some EU member states on grain supplies from Ukraine increase the risk of rising imports in other countries, including Moldova, farmers said."

SpaceX Rocket Fuel Creates Stunning Blue Spiral in Alaska's Northern Lights

A light blue spiral resembling a galaxy appeared amid the aurora borealis in Alaska over the weekend. This was caused by excess fuel jettisoned from a SpaceX rocket launched from California.

The fuel turned into ice at high altitudes and was visible as a big, swirly cloud in sunlight. Such occurrences are not common, but have been seen before. The polar launch of the rocket made it visible over a large area, and the phenomenon was captured on camera and shared widely on social media.

Dead 300-Kilogram NASA Satellite Set to Plummet Toward Earth

NASA has issued a warning that an old American satellite - the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) - is set to fall to Earth after spending over 20 years in orbit.

NASA engineers shut down the 300-kilogram spacecraft in 2018 due to data transmission problems. The agency predicts RHESSI will enter Earth's atmosphere on April 19. Although most of the vehicle is expected to burn up as it moves through the atmosphere, some parts may persist. However, the risk of them hitting someone on Earth is low, at 1 in 2,467.

Swedish Radio Leaves Twitter After Being Marked as 'Publicly-Funded Media'

Despite the fact that the announcement came almost immediately shortly after Swedish Radio, together with fellow national broadcaster SVT were both marked as publicly-funded media according to Twitter's new policy, the state media giant claimed that the decision had nothing to do with the new label.

SR social media manager Christian Gillinger suggested that Twitter "simply changed over the years" and became "less important" to the broadcaster. He furthermore reports indicating that only 7 percent of Swedes are on Twitter daily.

AI Could Undermine Democracy if Used in Elections, Elon Musk Says

Musk said it would be wise for governments to have a contingency plan against AI in the event of any potential fallout, including measures such as a "hardware off switch," power shutdown of server centers storing AI, or simply "disintegration" of server centers.

He also believes that digital and biological consciousness should not be treated equally, especially if "digital intelligence decides to curtail the biological intelligent."

VIRAL: Indian Civet cat sows fear and panic at Pakistani Parliament 🇵🇰

A wild cat snuck into Pakistan’s Parliament House on Tuesday. Although harmless to humans, it was nonetheless an unusual guest and it sent shivers through staff before police managed to catch the poor thing.

🤔 Ironically, it’s the second cat to make its way into the parliament building in as many days. Apart from the thrill of giving delicate lawmakers a nervous breakdown, it was probably seeking shelter from the rain.

In light of this trend, it is imperative to be prepared for that eventuality, and develop an electronic version of the pound sterling, the Bank of England’s deputy governor told the Innovate Finance Global Summit 2023 at London’s Guildhall.

💸 Ukraine's sovereign debt might reach record-breaking $173 billion by the end of 2023, former Ukrainian PM Mykola Azarov said

💬 "In absolute figures, by the end of the year a total amount of the public debt can reach record-breaking 6.4 trillion hryvnia - $173 billion. Even though a part of western assistance comes as grants, the most part of the money from the US, the EU, and other countries and organizations are just credits. And they will need to be paid sooner or later," Azarov said.

Ukraine's state budget is formed on the basis of the Western help, which allows to estimate the debt at 120% of the country's gross domestic product, he added.

💬 "But if we look at our pure profits, the debt will be 300%. Yes, a group of creditors granted Ukraine a deferral on the external debt payments until 2027. But the deferral does not mean that the debt will not need to be paid. Along with the debt, Ukraine's expenditures on the debt service also grow. This year they will double," Azarov added.
