US lawmakers introduce bill to enable states to verify citizenship of voters
"It’s simple: only American citizens have the right to vote in American elections. Proud to join Representative Chip Roy in this effort to equip states with the ability to verify citizenship status," US Congressmen Matt Rosendale said in a statement via Twitter.
The legislation, dubbed the Protecting American Voters Act, is also co-sponsored by Congressmen Pete Sessions and Michael Burgess.
The bill amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require the US Homeland Security Secretary and Social Security Commissioner to provide state governments, upon request, with information to verify the citizenship status of people registering to vote in federal elections, according to the bill text.
The measure, if signed into law, would apply to all US elections held after January 1, 2023.

Ilyushin Il-76: Russia's workhorse strategic airlifter
The Ilyushin Il-76 is a heavy airlifter used for transporting large loads long distances. It can carry up to 140 troops or 125 airborne force personnel, or a variety of vehicles or other equipment.
The aircraft has a distinctive glass nose which provides the navigator with an unparalleled view during landings. It is called the "humpback" by Russian pilots because of the placement of its wings above the fuselage.
Over 960 Il-76s have been built since its introduction in the 1970s and it is operated by several countries and civilian carriers. The cost of the aircraft is estimated to be around $65 million and can be chartered for between $4,800 and $6,700 per flight hour.

US Ohio-class nuclear Sub to visit South Korean waters
One of the US Navy's Ohio-class submarines, which are equipped with nuclear missiles, will visit South Korea soon. It is unclear if this is a one-time decision or part of a public signaling strategy, but some experts think it reflects efforts to counter the shrinking and readiness problems of the US submarine force.
Despite the submarines' core mission of remaining undetected, the importance of nuclear signaling in the competition with Russia and China makes the possible detection of US submarines worth it.
The US-South Korea relationship has seen a mix of cooperation and tension, but the US seeks to strengthen its alliances in the Asia-Pacific region under President Joe Biden.

🇫🇷 Police unions in France call for law to combat rioters
In a letter addressed to Macron, the unions said that police live in an "apocalyptic situation" faced with violence from the demonstrators and called for an emergency law against "thugs."
On April 14, the French Constitutional Council approved the key article of the pension reform bill, which would gradually raise the age of retirement in France from 62 to 64 years by 2030. The reform sparked a strong backlash, prompting people to take to the streets across the country.

🇷🇺🇹🇷🇭🇺 Russia continues to reliably supply gas to Hungary via the Turkish Stream pipeline under a long-term contract
In the context of the energy crisis and sanctions against Russia, the priority is to ensure the security of supplies, a representative of the Hungarian Ministry of Energy told Sputnik, adding that, under a long-term contract, Russia "reliably supplies gas" to Hungary via the Turkish Stream gas pipeline.
The representative added that the amount of gas in Hungarian storage facilities is 1.9 billion cubic meters, which is significantly more than at the end of the previous heating season, and will help to properly prepare for next winter.

📰 Soros, Fortress Investment Group may buy Vice Media in $400 million deal
The deal is expected to buy out other Vice investors, including private equity firm TPG Group, Sixth Street Partners and media mogul James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch.
Insider sources told US media that the current management team at Vice will likely remain in place, and that buyers plan to find a role for Vice co-founder Shane Smith.
The sale, which is part of a planned bankruptcy declaration, could go forward as early as next week, the sources said. Some of Vice’s debt held by TPG and Sixth Street may drop in value as part of the deal.
In 2019, the Soros group and Fortress were part of a consortium that invested $250 million in Vice, a cash infusion intended to help the company after it failed to live up to its $5.7 billion valuation in 2017.
