Ilyushin Il-76: Russia's workhorse strategic airlifter

The Ilyushin Il-76 is a heavy airlifter used for transporting large loads long distances. It can carry up to 140 troops or 125 airborne force personnel, or a variety of vehicles or other equipment.

The aircraft has a distinctive glass nose which provides the navigator with an unparalleled view during landings. It is called the "humpback" by Russian pilots because of the placement of its wings above the fuselage.

Over 960 Il-76s have been built since its introduction in the 1970s and it is operated by several countries and civilian carriers. The cost of the aircraft is estimated to be around $65 million and can be chartered for between $4,800 and $6,700 per flight hour.

US Ohio-class nuclear Sub to visit South Korean waters

One of the US Navy's Ohio-class submarines, which are equipped with nuclear missiles, will visit South Korea soon. It is unclear if this is a one-time decision or part of a public signaling strategy, but some experts think it reflects efforts to counter the shrinking and readiness problems of the US submarine force.

Despite the submarines' core mission of remaining undetected, the importance of nuclear signaling in the competition with Russia and China makes the possible detection of US submarines worth it.

The US-South Korea relationship has seen a mix of cooperation and tension, but the US seeks to strengthen its alliances in the Asia-Pacific region under President Joe Biden.

🎖️
While Indian servicemen's contribution to the Second World War holds a special place, one of the widely lauded heroes 🇮🇳Havaldar Gajendra Singh Chand is invariably remembered on Russia's Victory Day, celebrated annually on 9 May.

During one of the trips to supply much-needed material for Soviet forces, he was badly hurt in the thigh. But he refused to give up and carried on, managing to deliver the cargo before falling unconscious. Days later, post-full medical attention at a hospital, he had the option to return home. However, Gajendra chose to rejoin and continued helping the USSR. For his exemplary grit and courageous assistance in ensuring the transit of military cargo for Soviet forces through Iran, Gajendra was awarded the Order of the Red Star, a coveted medal for his great contribution to the defense of the USSR in war and peacetime.

🇫🇷 Police unions in France call for law to combat rioters

In a letter addressed to Macron, the unions said that police live in an "apocalyptic situation" faced with violence from the demonstrators and called for an emergency law against "thugs."

On April 14, the French Constitutional Council approved the key article of the pension reform bill, which would gradually raise the age of retirement in France from 62 to 64 years by 2030. The reform sparked a strong backlash, prompting people to take to the streets across the country.

📰 Soros, Fortress Investment Group may buy Vice Media in $400 million deal

The deal is expected to buy out other Vice investors, including private equity firm TPG Group, Sixth Street Partners and media mogul James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch.

Insider sources told US media that the current management team at Vice will likely remain in place, and that buyers plan to find a role for Vice co-founder Shane Smith.

The sale, which is part of a planned bankruptcy declaration, could go forward as early as next week, the sources said. Some of Vice’s debt held by TPG and Sixth Street may drop in value as part of the deal.

In 2019, the Soros group and Fortress were part of a consortium that invested $250 million in Vice, a cash infusion intended to help the company after it failed to live up to its $5.7 billion valuation in 2017.

💸 US to fast-track $500mln arms for Taiwan amid narrative of China 'threat'

Washington, which has been pumping Taiwan with modern weapons to repel a Chinese “invasion,” reportedly intends to speed up the process even more, readying another military package for the island, worth $500 million. Moreover, to expedite the delivery, it intends to resort to the Presidential Drawdown Authority, sources were cited as saying.

The Presidential Drawdown Authority allows for quick delivery of "defense articles and services from Department of Defense stocks to foreign countries and international organizations to respond to unforeseen emergencies," as per the US State Department's website. In fact, such shipments can be made in a matter of days, even hours, of approval.

The attempt to evade the usually protracted process of arms contracting and production comes as US lawmakers have been raising a hue and cry over a backlog in already approved armaments meant for Taiwan reportedly worth $19 billion. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis have been blamed for the delays.
