Beijing: There is “little chance of a meeting” between the defense ministers of China and the US due to a spat over sanctions
Beijing has warned that there is “little chance of a meeting” between the defense ministers of China and the US at an upcoming security forum in Singapore due to a spat over sanctions, a UK newspaper has reported, citing unnamed sources.
The sources claimed that arranging Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin’s talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore scheduled for June “is fraught with difficulty.”
According to the insiders, Li, who became defense minister in March, was placed under US sanctions over Chinese imports of Russian arms in 2018, when he was serving as a general.
The sources added that even though Washington assured Beijing that the sanctions do not prevent Austin from meeting Li in a third country, “it would be almost impossible” for China to agree to the two defense chiefs’ meeting while the restrictive measures remain in place.

🤨 The Republicans and the Democrats remain at odds over the US debt ceiling standoff amid growing speculation about the country’s possible default
If the US does default on its debt, it will be “very costly in terms of government jobs," Marc Ostwald, chief economist at ADM Investor Services International, told Sputnik.
Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that political brinkmanship over increasing the US debt ceiling may prompt far-reaching economic repercussions, even without the "catastrophe" of a default.

🏃♀️🇪🇸 Female running race organizers are being accused of sexism for giving the winner a food processor as a prize
"We apologize if any woman may have felt offended but it is a product that we believe does not have a sexist character and that it is ideal for any athlete who wants to improve their nutritional habits," the organizers of a women’s race in Spain said.
The apology came after Spain’s Secretary of State for Equality and Anti-Gender Violence Angela Rodriguez Pam criticized the prize. "They gave the winner a Thermomix and to the rest 0% [fat] products. If you win, you’re a housewife and if not, at least you’ll lose weight,” she stated.
Apparently, after the apology, the situation with "equality and anti-gender violence" has been normalized in Spain.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen: Default on US obligations would produce an economic and financial catastrophe
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that political brinkmanship over increasing the US debt ceiling may prompt far-reaching economic repercussions, even without the "catastrophe" of a default.
"In my assessment - and that of economists across the board - a default on US obligations would produce an economic and financial catastrophe," she said during a speech at a G7 meeting of finance ministers and central bank chiefs in Niigata, Japan on Thursday.
According to the Treasury Secretary, "Short of a default, brinkmanship over the debt limit can also impose serious economic costs."
Additionally, Yellen cautioned that a possible default in America “would spark a global downturn” and “would also risk undermining US global economic leadership and raise questions about our ability to defend our national security interests.”

US and Britain 'working in tandem' on Ukraine missile supplies
The US and its allies are providing Ukraine with lethal weapons, and the UK is reportedly considering supplying long-range cruise missiles to Kiev, which could potentially strike deep in Russian territory.
According to Russian military expert Ivan Konovalov, the US and the UK may be working together on this matter, with the UK providing the long-range missiles that the US is reluctant to send. Konovalov speculated that a confirmed missile strike deep in Russian territory might prompt a response against the "collective West", Ukraine's weapon supplier.
Dmitry Drozdenko, chief editor of the "Arsenal of the Fatherland" web portal, suggested that the UK may be more interested in continuing the Ukrainian conflict than the US and may be using it to deal with its own domestic problems.

The American Patriot air defense system could not shoot down the Russian Kinzhal missile, as it is not capable of intercepting targets at such a speed, a high-ranking source in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation told Sputnik.
“Fake news that the Russian Kinzhal missile was allegedly intercepted is an attempt at wishful thinking. The fact is that the flight speed of the Kinzhal missile exceeds the maximum combat modes of anti-aircraft missile systems supplied by the West to the Kiev regime, including Patriot“.
Earlier, the Pentagon said that Ukraine shot down the "Kinzhal" with the help of the Patriot missile defense system transferred to it.

🇰🇪 ICC case against Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto was Western 'conspiracy', Kenyan defense minister states
The "international conspiracy" was allegedly concocted by Western states, Kenya's "international partners" and now-opposition leader Raila Odinga in a bid to eliminate the threat to Odinga’s candidature at the presidential elections in 2013, according to Kenyan Defense Minister Aden Duale.
The minister noted that "The ICC case was a factor of who will become the president [in 2013] which was sponsored by the United Kingdom."
🗣 "Raila was assured by the West that he will be their presidential candidate. So to eliminate them [Uhuru and Ruto], they brought up the ICC cases. Ruto and Uhuru were the main threat which is why the other cases were dropped along the way," Duale said.
The case in question related to charges of crimes against humanity brought against Kenyatta and Ruto in 2012. The charges were dropped in 2014 and 2016, respectively, due to a lack of evidence
