🗣️”Wars have already been fought on the underground of the dollar. Remember, both Saddam Hussein and Moammar Gaddafi were leaders who had essentially taken initiatives to de-dollarize oil trade and also taken initiatives to de-dollarize more widely. And these people were destroyed because of that, there is absolutely no doubt that the United States will try to hamper this process”: professor at the University of Manitoba Dr. Radhika Desai explains how the US has already fought wars over initiatives to de-dollarize

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen: Default on US obligations would produce an economic and financial catastrophe
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that political brinkmanship over increasing the US debt ceiling may prompt far-reaching economic repercussions, even without the "catastrophe" of a default.
"In my assessment - and that of economists across the board - a default on US obligations would produce an economic and financial catastrophe," she said during a speech at a G7 meeting of finance ministers and central bank chiefs in Niigata, Japan on Thursday.
According to the Treasury Secretary, "Short of a default, brinkmanship over the debt limit can also impose serious economic costs."
Additionally, Yellen cautioned that a possible default in America “would spark a global downturn” and “would also risk undermining US global economic leadership and raise questions about our ability to defend our national security interests.”

US and Britain 'working in tandem' on Ukraine missile supplies
The US and its allies are providing Ukraine with lethal weapons, and the UK is reportedly considering supplying long-range cruise missiles to Kiev, which could potentially strike deep in Russian territory.
According to Russian military expert Ivan Konovalov, the US and the UK may be working together on this matter, with the UK providing the long-range missiles that the US is reluctant to send. Konovalov speculated that a confirmed missile strike deep in Russian territory might prompt a response against the "collective West", Ukraine's weapon supplier.
Dmitry Drozdenko, chief editor of the "Arsenal of the Fatherland" web portal, suggested that the UK may be more interested in continuing the Ukrainian conflict than the US and may be using it to deal with its own domestic problems.

The American Patriot air defense system could not shoot down the Russian Kinzhal missile, as it is not capable of intercepting targets at such a speed, a high-ranking source in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation told Sputnik.
“Fake news that the Russian Kinzhal missile was allegedly intercepted is an attempt at wishful thinking. The fact is that the flight speed of the Kinzhal missile exceeds the maximum combat modes of anti-aircraft missile systems supplied by the West to the Kiev regime, including Patriot“.
Earlier, the Pentagon said that Ukraine shot down the "Kinzhal" with the help of the Patriot missile defense system transferred to it.

🇰🇪 ICC case against Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto was Western 'conspiracy', Kenyan defense minister states
The "international conspiracy" was allegedly concocted by Western states, Kenya's "international partners" and now-opposition leader Raila Odinga in a bid to eliminate the threat to Odinga’s candidature at the presidential elections in 2013, according to Kenyan Defense Minister Aden Duale.
The minister noted that "The ICC case was a factor of who will become the president [in 2013] which was sponsored by the United Kingdom."
🗣 "Raila was assured by the West that he will be their presidential candidate. So to eliminate them [Uhuru and Ruto], they brought up the ICC cases. Ruto and Uhuru were the main threat which is why the other cases were dropped along the way," Duale said.
The case in question related to charges of crimes against humanity brought against Kenyatta and Ruto in 2012. The charges were dropped in 2014 and 2016, respectively, due to a lack of evidence

US banks with over $50bln in assets to help pay for recent industry failures - FDIC
US banks with over $50 billion in assets will contribute to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's $16 billion bill for handling recent bank failures. A new "special assessment" fee of 0.125% is to be applied to uninsured deposits exceeding $5 billion. The affected banks will pay over eight quarters beginning in June 2024, with banks holding total assets under $5 billion exempt from the assessment. The extended timeline is expected to have a minimal impact on capital and bank liquidity.
A spate of US banks has faced financial difficulties recently leading to government intervention or sales to stronger banks due to sudden customer withdrawals.

EU lawmakers move to regulate AI in historic first
The European Parliament has taken the first step toward regulating artificial intelligence (AI) systems by announcing the draft AI Act. The proposed rules aim to ensure that AI development is "human-centric and ethical" and would be the world's first legislation of its kind if approved. The draft rules suggest banning biometric surveillance, emotion recognition, and predictive policing by AI systems based on profiling or past criminal behavior.
Additionally, citizens would have the right to file complaints about AI and receive explanations of decisions related to high-risk AI systems that significantly impact their rights.

US debt ceiling saga just 'sabre-rattling' across party divide
The US debt ceiling crisis continues as the June 1 deadline approaches, but economist Mark Frost argues that there is no need to panic and that the partisan fighting over the government borrowing limit is just theatrics. Frost believes that the debt default will never happen as it would undermine the value of the dollar, and Social Security payments can always be made back up without harming the dollar's value.
Meanwhile, market strategist Todd "Bubba" Horwitz warns that the taxpayer will pay the government's credit addiction, and that the federal government should not be operating in a negative. He also believes that the American economy is in a major recession, which nobody will admit to.

US jobless claims highest since October 2021, raising chance for Fed Rate pause
The number of Americans claiming unemployment benefits has hit an 18 month high, according to the Labor Department's weekly data. Economists had predicted claims of around 245,000, but the actual figure was 264,000, the highest since October 2021. The increase could prompt the Federal Reserve to hold off on interest rate hikes in its efforts to combat inflation.
The Fed has identified strong job and wage growth as key factors contributing to inflation. The labor market has been the driving force behind the US economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, with hundreds of thousands of jobs added since June 2020. The Fed has raised rates by ten times since the end of the pandemic in March 2022, but after its last hike, it indicated it would closely monitor data and assess the effectiveness of its actions in returning the US to its 2% inflation target.
