Honduras ready to join BRICS' new development bank
Honduras has issued a formal request to join the BRICS' New Development Bank (NDB), the office of President Xiomara Castro tweeted on Saturday.
The step came as Castro met the bank’s President Dilma Rousseff during her six-day visit to China. The NDB is based in the Chinese city of Shanghai.
The Saturday developments come a week after Rousseff told Argentine Economy Minister Sergio Massa that the NDB’s board of directors formally authorized a vote on his country’s admission to the bank, which is due to be announced at its next meeting, scheduled for August.
During a BRICS summit in June 2022, member states pledged to enhance the NDB, following the successful admission of Bangladesh, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Uruguay in September 2021.

Scott Ritter: Ukrainian counteroffensive runs into defensive wall
💬 "The sad truth of the matter is that there are no NATO forces capable of successfully executing the offensive tasks that have been assigned to Ukraine. No one doubts the courage and commitment of the Ukrainian forces which have been thrown against Colonel General Romanchuk’s defensive barrier. But courage and commitment cannot overcome the reality that NATO lacks the ability, both in terms of equipment and doctrine, to successfully defeat Russia in a force-on-force confrontation, especially one which has Russia playing to its doctrinal strength (defensive operations) while NATO seeks to do something (an assault against prepared defenses) that it has no experience in doing," Scott Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector and retired US Marine Corps intelligence officer, wrote in his article for Sputnik

Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline unlikely to launch soon after Ukrainian attack
On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that a Ukrainian sabotage group had blown up the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline in the Kharkov Region, adding that there are casualties among the civilian population.
The realistic prospect of the ammonia pipeline restoration and launch has been pushed back for a very long time," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershininsaid following talks at the UN headquarters in Geneva. The diplomat called the attack yet another example of Kiev's "unreasonable, irrational and criminal" policies.
The official said that exports of ammonia exports from Togliatti to Ukrainian ports were crucially important for Africa, Asia and South America, adding that the international community should not ignore the incident.

Saudi customs seize over 450,000 Captagon tablets in country’s northwest
"Customs of Al Hadithah prevented two attempts to smuggle more than 450,000 captagon tablets, which were found in trucks that arrived in the kingdom," the Saudi Arabian Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority said on Twitter.
The statement noted that in addition to the smugglers, two people in Saudi Arabia, who were the recipients of the captagon, were also detained.
In April, the Saudi Arabian General Directorate of Narcotics Control prevented an attempt to smuggle more than 12 million amphetamine pills in boxes with pomegranates.
In 2021, Saudi Arabia said that it was going to ban the import of Lebanese fruits and vegetables since most of the drugs come to the country from Lebanon and Syria.

Colombian gov’t, ELN armed group agree to ceasefire for 6 months - Cuban Minister
On Friday, the third round of negotiations between the Colombian government and ELN rebels, mediated by Cuba, was held in Havana.
"By announcing this agreement, the parties launch the ceasefire process," Rodriguez said, adding that the hostilities will be stopped for 180 days from August 3.
The radical left National Liberation Army consists of several thousand people and is the second largest armed rebel organization in Colombia after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. Colombia, the United States and the European Union designated ELN as a terrorist organization.
The negotiation process between the government of Colombia and ELN was launched in 2016 but stopped two years later. New rounds of negotiations between the parties were held in November-December 2022 and in March 2023 after Gustavo Petro was sworn in as the country's president.

Medical negligence in UK investigated as possible cause of about 40 deaths
Around 40 deaths at a hospital in Brighton are being investigated by police, following claims of negligence made by two surgeons who were dismissed after raising concerns about patient safety. The accidents allegedly occurred between 2015 and 2020 in the general surgery and neurosurgery departments, but investigations were delayed due to local obstruction.
The surgeons, Krishna Singh and Mansoor Foroughi, were reportedly let go after raising concerns about the volume of deaths and serious harm to patients.
Singh told newspaper that cost-saving changes had been driven in an unsafe manner, leading to higher complication rates and patient mortality, while Foroughi said that at least two of the deaths were the result of a surgeon suffering from Parkinson's disease.

🇮🇱 🎷Archeologists recreate 12,000-year-old bird-bone flute found in Israel
Archaeologists from France and Israel have unearthed the oldest Middle Eastern musical instruments - tiny flutes made from bird bones - at a site in northern Israel named Eynan.
The flutes date back to 10,000 BC from the Natufian culture period, when agriculture became more prevalent as the Ice Age gave way to warmer climates.
These findings may offer insights into the transition from hunter-gatherers to an agrarian society. Some of the flutes' bird bones had naturally hollow cores, but scientists were able to identify regular human-made holes that indicate their creation.
A similar discovery of flutes made from vulture and mammoth bones in southern Germany was made in 2008, estimated to be about 40,000 years old.

🇯🇵🇰🇵 Japanese Defense Ministry extends order to destroy North Korean missiles in case of threat
"Regarding the order on the introduction of measures to destroy ballistic missiles, issued on May 29, 2023, we will temporary extend it for the period after June 11, 2023," the Japanese Defense Ministry said in a statement.
North Korea's failed attempt to launch its Malligyong-1 military reconnaissance satellite on the Chollima-1 carrier rocket resulted in the rocket crashing into the Yellow Sea due to engine failure in its second stage, as reported by local media.
Tokyo lodged a protest with North Korea through Beijing's diplomatic channels after the missile launch, deeming it a threat to Japan's security. The International Maritime Organization passed a resolution denouncing the launch as a major hazard to global shipping security. North Korea issued a warning on June 4 that it might stop notifying the organization about forthcoming missile launches.

Trump: US left without ammunition due to military assistance to Ukraine
"Right now, we don’t have any ammunition. Ukraine has the ammunition, all of it just about," Former US President Donald Trump said, speaking to Republicans in the state of Georgia.
Trump noted that the United States during his presidency "had so much ammunition" and now "we have very little ammunition to protect ourselves."
The former president also promised to achieve peace in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if he is reelected to the presidency next year.
Trump added that he is "the only candidate who can make this promise," claiming he would prevent World War III.
On Friday, the US Defense Department said that Washington would provide a $2.1 billion military aid package to Ukraine, which included munitions for air defense systems, as well as missiles and laser-guided rocket system munitions, among other things.

Biggest ‘supervolcano’ in Europe inching toward explosion, scientists say
A long-dormant Italian supervolcano, Campi Flegrei, located to the west of Naples, is approaching its first eruption since 1538 with the weakening crust around it making an eruption more probable, according to a new study by researchers at University College London.
While an eruption is far from guaranteed, if it were to occur, it could have catastrophic consequences. Half a million Italians live atop the volcano, with 1.5 million more living near its potential blast radius. The study marks a "step change" in improving forecasts of volcanic eruptions worldwide, the lead author said.
Scientists will have to adjust their procedures for estimating the likelihood of new magma or gas routes reaching the surface.
