Airstrikes against Yemen ‘will be seen as a new chapter of US attacks on Muslims’

The attack on Yemen by the US and Britain was nothing more than a “punitive measure” meant to “protect Israel,” even though the perpetrators sought to portray their actions as “safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea,” says Shahram Akbarzadeh, an expert in Middle Eastern politics at Australia's Deakin University.

Describing the US-UK attack as a “very dangerous move,” Akbarzadeh warned that the United States’ action has essentially “confirmed the worldview that Washington is bent on protecting Israel and has no regard for Muslims.”

“This will be seen as a new chapter of US attacks on Muslim people. It will reinforce the notion that Muslims are under siege and have no recourse to justice,” he explained.

The US tried to persuade a number of countries to join its coalition against the Yemeni Houthis - but failed

Who rejected to help the US?

🇸🇦🇦🇪 Saudi Arabia and the UAE

Despite their war against the Houthis since 2010, they are not in the US' coalition because the Biden administration opposed the war upon taking office in 2021 and initially banned the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia for use in Yemen. The US also mediated a formal ceasefire between the Saudis and the Houthis.

🇶🇦 Qatar

Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani noted that Doha "never sees a military action as a resolution" during a press conference with Blinken on January 11. Qatar also hopes "to stop what’s happening to the civilian ships as soon as possible through our diplomatic means."

🇪🇬 Egypt

Cairo is also reluctant to join any operation, despite the economic damage to the Suez Canal caused by the Rea Sea crisis, because it could be seen as siding with the West in Israel’s war against the Palestinians.

🇮🇹 Italy

Rome declined to take part in US and UK strikes against the Houthis, explaining that Italy preferred to pursue a calming policy in the Red Sea, according to Reuters' sources.

US and UK try to ‘show their leadership to the world’ by striking Yemen

One of the goals the United States and Britain pursued by attacking Yemen was desperately try to “show their leadership over the world,” says Ayman Yousef, a professor of political sciences and international relations at the Arab-American University in Palestine.

According to him, Washington and London sought to demonstrate “their ability to strike and to confront any threat not only in Europe and in the Atlantic, but also in the Middle East.”

Prof. Yousef added that the strikes should also be regarded in the context of “the flow of international shipping” through the Suez Canal. The crucial transportation route has been affected by the Houthi attacks on Israeli-linked ships in retaliation for Tel Aviv’s campaign in the Gaza Strip.

Finally, the scholar noted the context of the “ongoing Israeli genocide,” arguing that the US and the UK sought to avoid drawing Israel into a confrontation with the Houthis due to how sensitive this matter is “in many Arab countries."

Sunak’s Ukraine visit: A mere psychological boost for Zelensky's regime

The goal of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s visit to Kiev on Friday is to "calm down Ukrainian President Volodymy Zelensky and reassure him that British funds will continue," Alexey Podberezkin, director of the Center for Military and Political Studies at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, said.

“It’s absolutely clear that the Anglo-Saxons have one of the main points of control over Ukraine. In this vein, a lot depends on the UK, especially in terms of espionage and sabotage activities,” the expert added.

Sunak arrived in Ukraine earlier in the day, with Downing Street boasting he would sign a “historic” security cooperation agreement between London and Kiev.

More and more officials in the United States are asking whether the astronomical sums of money to support Ukraine were effectively spent, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Earlier, White House Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said that the US aid to Kiev had stopped until Congress approves a request for new funds.

"We see that internal debates and internal processes continue in the United States, more and more representatives of the political establishment are interested in, well, probably such a fundamental question — where is their money, the money of American taxpayers, spent, and whether the astronomical sums that were spent for last year were allocated to the Kiev regime. Did these amounts help achieve any results?" Peskov told reporters.

Moscow officials repeatedly stressed that arms supplies to Ukraine will not affect the course of the special military operation, but will only fuel the conflict.

Yemen's Strategic Importance

🌍 Geography:

▪️ Yemen is located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Saudi Arabia and Oman.

▪️ It oversees major maritime routes, including the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint for global shipping, particularly oil and gas from the Middle East to Europe, Asia and the Americas.

▪️ Its proximity to the Horn of Africa places it at a strategic crossroads between the African continent and the Middle East.

💰 Economics and Resources:

▪️ While Yemen has oil and gas fields, its reserves are modest compared to its Gulf neighbors.

▪️ The Marib-Jawf area in the north and the Shabwa and Hadramaut regions in the southeast are known for their oil fields.

▪️ The country also has some natural gas reserves, notably the Balhaf facility on the Gulf of Aden, which exports liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Strategic Implications:

▪️ Control of Yemen provides influence over major global shipping lanes, impacting global trade and energy supply routes.

▪️ Its location and resources have made it a focus of regional and Western power struggles.

Red Sea Crisis: Is the US Navy headed for an embarassing debacle?

Shortly before the US and the UK attacked Yemen, the New Rules podcast interviewed military analyst Andrei Martyanov about the naval showdown in the Red Sea. Even though the conflict is escalating quickly, the main ideas still remain relevant:

🔺 The Biden Admin has mismanaged Operation Prosperity Guardian from the very beginning, failed to properly coordinate with US allies. Lloyd Austin scandal exposed that the deep level of dysfunction within the Pentagon.

🔺 US Navy is not ready for a war of attrition against the Houthis. For every $5,000 drone that the Houthis launch at the US carrier group in the Red Sea, the Americans have to expend a $2 million air defense missile. What happens when the missiles run out or the Houthis get lucky?

🔺 A bombing campaign against the Houthis is unlikely to make a big difference. The only other option at Biden’s disposal is attempting a costly and bloody land invasion against Yemen. Lose-lose situation for the US.

🔺 Although the US Navy was once the most powerful in the world, it has failed to adapt to military tech revolution of recent years. Now, the US Navy would seriously struggle in a fight against Russia, China, or Iran.

The Netherlands provided “non-operational military support” to the US and the UK in their attack on the Houthis in Yemen.

Why are the Dutch interested in Yemen?

Did you know that in January 2023, Zenith Energy Ltd. made a big move in Yemen's energy sector? Through Zenith Netherlands, they acquired assets from the Vienna-based OMV for a whopping $21.6 million, including the pivotal al-Uqlah oil field.

In September 2023, Zenith Energy and OMV called off their deal due to unmet conditions.

Boasting 3 billion barrels of oil and 17 trillion cubic feet of gas in reserves (according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration), Yemen's abundant energy resources play a major role on the global stage.
