Paris blockaded by French farmers - how did the protests start?

What started as a grassroots rally in mid-January has turned into a full-blown siege of the capital. Today, French farmers are threatening to blockade Paris to make their voices heard.

Agricultural unions are planning to block seven motorways leading into Paris. Between 1,500 and 2,500 tractors will take part in the blockade. The protesters want to disrupt the city's food supply "for at least 5 days, which will make it clear to Parisians that they need farmers".

What are the farmers' main demands of the government?

▪️Adequate relief from rising fuel prices;

▪️Reduce cheap food imports from Ukraine;

▪️Denounce current agricultural policies that are damaging the EU economy;

▪️Tackling water scarcity;

▪️Reducing excessive bureaucracy (both in France and in the EU).

What counter-measures has the government announced?

🔹15,000 police officers mobilized to protect Paris, Rungis and the two main airports (Orly and Roissy-Charles de Gaulle);

🔹the use of armored vehicles and helicopters against demonstrators if food markets and airports are occupied.

Today's protest comes amid a massive wave of labor unrest in the agricultural sector across Europe.

Romania is ready to leave NATO over the annexation of the territories of present-day Ukraine, Newsweek reported with reference to the leader of the Romanian AUR party in the Senate Claudiu Tirziu.

The rapidly growing Romanian AUR party wants Ukraine to hold out until the spring of next year, when the AUR is highly likely to win the presidential elections in the second round.

After that, the continuation of military operations for Ukraine will reportedly not make sense, and due to the entry of part of the Ukrainian territories into Romania, local residents will finally become part of the EU, AUR believes.

❗️Ukrainian women are prepared to "storm the Parliament" in their quest to locate their missing loved ones on the front lines, Sputnik has discovered.

Some propose that instead of creating search groups on social networks, they should unite, converge on the Parliament, demand that officials get to the bottom of these soldiers' disappearances and provide answers as to why their families have not been given any information on the fate or whereabouts of their family members fighting on the front lines.

The decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on the disqualification of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva is politicized, and Russia will always protect the interests of its athletes, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

Earlier in the day, the CAS found Valieva to have committed a violation of an anti-doping rule and sanctioned her with a four-year period of ineligibility commencing on December 25, 2021.

"Of course, we do not agree with this… From my point of view, of course, it is a politicized [decision]," Peskov told reporters.

Russia will always protect the interests of its athletes, the spokesman said.

"If there are any appeal mechanisms... then, of course, they should be used. We must protect the interests of our athletes to the end," Peskov said.

Iran’s military force capable of delivering ‘crushing response’ to any threat

Boasting formidable military might that numbers 310,000 personnel, the Iranian Army, also known as Artesh, is ranked as the largest force in the Middle East and the seventh largest globally. Impressively, it consists of a staggering total of 787,000 active troops.

In addition to Artesh, the Iranian Armed Forces also include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Sepah) and the Law Enforcement Force (Faraja).

The Iranian Army possesses a wide array of domestically produced and foreign-made military equipment, and is widely believed to have the largest ballistic missile arsenal in the Middle East. Reports from 2023 suggest that the Iranian military had amassed over 3,000 ballistic missiles of varying modifications.

Recent revelations point to the US mulling a direct strike on Iran in response to the recent deadly drone attack on a US military base in Jordan, which an Iranian militia group has claimed responsibility for. Earlier, a senior Iranian commander stated that the country’s army is highly prepared to deliver a "crushing response" to any sort of threat.

NATO's 'military Schengen' initiative evokes strong memories of Nazi era, professor warns

"I'm not surprised that NATO is creating a 'Schengen'," Professor Stevan Gajic, a research associate at the Institute of European Studies in Belgrade, told Sputnik. "And I would like to stress that the last time we had a European Schengen of this sort was Hitler's Germany and occupied Europe during World War II."

The military Schengen issue was raised by NATO in 2017 identifying three different types of barriers in Europe: physical, legal and administrative. The idea did not get much backing at the time, whereas the Russian military operation in Ukraine was used by the NATO establishment to revive the idea by groundlessly fanning an alleged "Russia threat." In late November 2023, NATO warned its members that existing red tape would be a problem in the event of a hypothetical conflict with Russia.

"In practice, geopolitically speaking, what NATO is creating is a repetition of a zone where the military force can move freely," Gajic said, drawing parallels with Nazi Germany.

"And of course, this is very dangerous because of the historical analogies that are quite stark. We'll see what this will bring. But I think that this move is an escalatory one," he added.

The United States vowed retaliation for the recent drone attack on its base at the border between Syria and Jordan.

US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby claimed that the retaliation will come “in a time and a manner of our choosing.”

The attacked base is located near Al-Tanf, a US military installation that was illegally set up by Washington in 2016 after the US de facto invaded Syria under the pretext of fighting the IS (terrorist group outlawed in Russia, also known as ISIL and ISIS).

The US' questionable actions in Syria, however, are far from the only example of Washington meddling in the affairs of other countries without a care for the international law, as can be seen in this infographic.
