Why Russia’s Pantsir remains the air defense system of choice for foreigners

The uniqueness of the Russian gun and missile system Pantsir-S1 pertains to its capability to “defend itself on its own”, with the help of supersonic missiles and 30 mm cannons, Russian Army colonel and veteran military analyst Viktor Litovkin told Sputnik.

He added that:

• The Pantsir is equipped with two twin cannons and 12 missiles, which can fly at a range of up to 20 kilometers and shoot down air targets at a height of 15 kilometers.

• “This system’s great achievement in that its radar is capable of detecting targets at a distance of over 20 kilometers. Moreover, the S-1’s target detection altitude and target destruction altitude are at zero meter.”

• When it comes to target detection, the Pantsir outperforms the US-made Patriot air defense system, which cannot track the targets flying at an altitude of between 60 and 100 meters.

• The S-1 could be based on a tracked or wheeled platform and that this air defense system could even be installed on a warship.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently touted the Pantsir as the weapon that is being snapped up like hot cakes on international defense markets.

🇨🇳 China successfully launched the world's first commercial artificial intelligence satellite into orbit, China Central Television reported. The launch took place at 11.06 local time (3.06 GMT), overseen by specialists from the floating Taiyuan Cosmodrome…
What we know about China's launch of the world's first AI commercial satellite?

On Saturday, February 3, China's Smart Dragon 3 carrier rocket blasted off from an off-shore launch facility in Guangdong province and successfully delivered nine satellites into Earth’s orbit.

One of these satellites, Xingshidai-18, has been touted by Chinese media as the first in-orbit artificial intelligence (AI) commercial satellite in the world.

▪️Xingshidai-18, also referred to as Rongpiao, is an integrated sensing network satellite made by Guoxing Aerospace Technology Co., Ltd., a company based in the city of Chengdu in China’s Sichuan province.

▪️According to CGTN, Xingshidai-18 is outfitted with a “sixth generation ‘satellite brain’ system” developed by the satellite’s maker, and is designed to perform “verification of the synaesthesia fusion AI algorithm” upon reaching orbit.

▪️Smart Dragon 3 (Jielong 3) is a 31 meter tall, 2.65 meter wide solid propellant carrier rocket that weighs 145 metric tons and can deliver up to 1,500 kg worth of payload into low orbit.

That same day, China conducted another successful space launch when a Long March 2C carrier rocket successfully brought a group of eleven Geely-02 constellation satellites into orbit.

Germany’s ‘silly’ investment project to defy China is 'totally unrealistic' – expert

The German government’s plan to reduce dependency on China for critical minerals by allocating around €1 billion ($1.1 billion) for raw materials investments is “a very silly project”, Thomas W. Pauken II, a veteran China and Asia-Pacific affairs observer and author, tells Sputnik.

He said that it remains unclear whether Germany itself of someone else could be behind the idea with the $1.1 billion raw materials investments.

“It could have been Brussels, London or Washington. And if that is the case, they will encourage Germany to make investments in their specific regions and member states in their countries or allies. However, is $1 billion sufficient to totally transform their minerals, their supply chains and regard to natural resources? This is absolutely absurd. This is a drop in a bucket.” W. Pauken II stresses.

Most of the imports are now coming from China, which holds superiority in terms of the mining and the processing of critical raw materials. The EU is, in particular, currently importing 93% of its magnesium and 86% of its rare earth metals from Beijing.

The current project seems to be part of the EU’s controversial efforts to wage a trade war with China, which shows no sign of yielding to the bloc’s pressure.

What new advanced anti-drone weapons is Russia deploying in the Ukrainian conflict?

Over the course of the conflict, Moscow has shown that, aside from a sizeable arsenal of sophisticated attack and surveillance drones, it also has a wide assortment of weapons designed to counter such threats.

Here are but a few examples of Russia's man-portable anti-drone weaponry:

▪️Airat-100 is an anti-drone rifle developed by St. Petersburg-based company ZMKh. The current (third) iteration of this weapon weighs 4.5 kilograms and is capable of suppressing drone command and navigation signals at a distance of up to 1.5 kilometers;

▪️Argus-Antidron is an ant-drone rifle developed by NPO Kaysant. This 5.1 kilogram weapon visually resembles an anti-tank rocket launcher but instead of launching rockets, it scrambles control signals for small drones and quadcopters at a distance of up to one kilometer;

▪️The Garpiya (Harpy) is an anti-drone rifle that has already seen use by Russian forces in the Ukrainian conflict zone. This weapon emits a powerful electromagnetic impulse that disrupts a drone’s communications at a distance of up to two kilometers.
