Germany’s ‘silly’ investment project to defy China is 'totally unrealistic' – expert

The German government’s plan to reduce dependency on China for critical minerals by allocating around €1 billion ($1.1 billion) for raw materials investments is “a very silly project”, Thomas W. Pauken II, a veteran China and Asia-Pacific affairs observer and author, tells Sputnik.

He said that it remains unclear whether Germany itself of someone else could be behind the idea with the $1.1 billion raw materials investments.

“It could have been Brussels, London or Washington. And if that is the case, they will encourage Germany to make investments in their specific regions and member states in their countries or allies. However, is $1 billion sufficient to totally transform their minerals, their supply chains and regard to natural resources? This is absolutely absurd. This is a drop in a bucket.” W. Pauken II stresses.

Most of the imports are now coming from China, which holds superiority in terms of the mining and the processing of critical raw materials. The EU is, in particular, currently importing 93% of its magnesium and 86% of its rare earth metals from Beijing.

The current project seems to be part of the EU’s controversial efforts to wage a trade war with China, which shows no sign of yielding to the bloc’s pressure.

What new advanced anti-drone weapons is Russia deploying in the Ukrainian conflict?

Over the course of the conflict, Moscow has shown that, aside from a sizeable arsenal of sophisticated attack and surveillance drones, it also has a wide assortment of weapons designed to counter such threats.

Here are but a few examples of Russia's man-portable anti-drone weaponry:

▪️Airat-100 is an anti-drone rifle developed by St. Petersburg-based company ZMKh. The current (third) iteration of this weapon weighs 4.5 kilograms and is capable of suppressing drone command and navigation signals at a distance of up to 1.5 kilometers;

▪️Argus-Antidron is an ant-drone rifle developed by NPO Kaysant. This 5.1 kilogram weapon visually resembles an anti-tank rocket launcher but instead of launching rockets, it scrambles control signals for small drones and quadcopters at a distance of up to one kilometer;

▪️The Garpiya (Harpy) is an anti-drone rifle that has already seen use by Russian forces in the Ukrainian conflict zone. This weapon emits a powerful electromagnetic impulse that disrupts a drone’s communications at a distance of up to two kilometers.

🇹🇷🇷🇺 Turkiye & Russia share the approach to the war in Gaza, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said, emphasizing that both governments wanted the conflict to end as soon as possible.

"As you know, Russia’s position on the war in Gaza is closer to where we stand. Russia’s position on ending the war as soon as possible, delivering humanitarian aid and on the two-state solution coincides with ours," Fidan told A Haber news channel on Sunday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to attacks on hospitals and other civilian infrastructure in the Palestinian enclave following the October 7 Hamas incursion into Israel and the retaliatory attack by Israel on Gaza.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Putin are expected to hold talks in Turkiye later in February. Fidan said that Erdogan was keeping tabs on the situation in Syria and in the Gaza Strip, which he would want to discuss with Putin.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan suggested the United States is “prepared” for war with Iran Sunday, vowing the country would take “more action” after US strikes in Iraq and Syria have already killed 40.

“This was the beginning of our response, there will be more steps,” Sullivan declared during an appearance on US television. “Some of those steps will be seen, some may not be seen,” he added cryptically.

Meanwhile the Iraqi and Iranian foreign ministries blasted the move. “Iraq reiterated its refusal that its lands be an arena for settling scores or showing force between warring countries,” read a statement from Iraq.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the US strikes are “another adventurous and strategic mistake by the United States that will result only in increased tension and instability.”

Republican lawmakers criticized US President Joe Biden’s recent retaliatory strikes in Iraq and Syria this weekend.

“If the goal is to deter Iran, you’re failing miserably,” said Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) during an interview on US television. “If you’ve convinced Iran you don’t want a wider war, they believe you.”

“They’re not afraid of us. They were afraid of [former US President Donald] Trump,” he added.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) blasted the US president in a statement Friday for waiting a week to launch the strikes, which have killed at least 40.

“Unfortunately, the administration waited for a week and telegraphed to the world, including to Iran, the nature of our response," the official stressed.
