🇺🇸🛥🕵️ The US navy has launched an investigation into a petroleum leak that contaminated the water system servicing Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman, Pentagon says.

Last week, the navy said petroleum from a fuel reservoir leaked into a water well that serves the navy water system on the base, which required more than 700 military families to be housed in hotels.

The Coast Guard airlifted a woman's corpse from her vehicle, which was balancing on the edge of Niagara Falls on Wednesday.

A Coast Guard officer was able to descend from a helicopter south of the car on a cable, broke the passenger side door of the motorist with an ax and grabbed the lifeless body from the car, lifting it into the helicopter.

Her death was later confirmed by the United States Coast Guard in the Great Lakes region

🖋 Former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to invalidate the subpoenas issued by the House select committee examining the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The suit describes the subpoenas for documents and testimony issued to Meadows in September as “overly broad and unduly burdensome”.

The key issue in the filing is the committee’s bid to obtain cell phone records from Meadows and “a third-party telecommunications company,” records which Meadows argues the panel “lacks lawful authority to seek and to obtain.”

❓ The committee had no immediate response to the Meadows lawsuit. Will they now move forward with contempt proceedings?

❗️A new 'D11' alliance may result from the Summit for Democracy, which is being hosted by Biden amid rising tensions with Russia and China, former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen tells Newsweek.

The alliance could be led by G7 members, as well as Australia, India, and South Korea.

Overseen by a permanent secretariat, it would set global norms and standards for the use of emerging technology, such as AI and social media. The democratic alliance should also create an "economic Article 5" inspired by NATO's collective defense article, Rasmussen believes.

Data shows that over the past 18 months, carjackings have risen exponentially in many US cities, experts say.

"In 2020, Chicago carjackings were up a staggering 134%, with 1,416 people being forcibly removed from their vehicle," the National Insurance Crime Bureau says. "This trend has continued in 2021, with Chicago seeing a 44% increase, Washington, D.C. up 45%, and New York an 81% increase."

The Public Policy Institute of California says car thefts are up 24% since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
