Pepe Escobar: The West is Hell-Bent on Provoking Russia Into Hot War

🔹 For all their circumlocutions, NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have effectively greenlighted Kiev using Western weapons for attacks deep inside the Russian Federation. The alleged debate, still ongoing, is just a “smokescreen” for the real objective: a pretext that could lead to WWIII.

🔹 There’s no reason to think Kiev will stick to “limited” strikes against relatively unimportant targets. Instead, it is likely to target critical security infrastructure in hopes of provoking an unrelenting Russian response, which in turn would pave the way for NATO to invoke Article 5 and de facto engage in a hot war.

🔹 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, once again displaying his trademark Taoist patience, had to come up with another serious reminder: Russia will regard the deployment of nuclear-capable F-16s in Ukraine – which de facto can only be operated by NATO pilots – as “a deliberate signal from NATO in the nuclear field to Russia.”

🔹 And still the gaggle of armchair Dr. Strangeloves – lavishly rewarded by the rarified Atlanticist plutocracy holding real power, funds, influence and mass media control - is not listening.

🇦🇲 Who is the Archbishop eyeing the post of Armenia’s Prime Minister?

Armenian opposition parties have united behind Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan in elections against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s governing coalition, whose ratings have hit historic lows.

What’s going on in Armenia?

◻️ After Azerbaijan seized the Nagorno-Karabakh exclave in 2023, Baku and Yerevan began re-drawing the border.

◻️ News that this would result in four villages in Tavush being handed over to Azerbaijan sparked protests. Demonstrators blocked roads to Georgia and Iran, calling the process unlawful.

◻️ The "Tavush for the Homeland" civil movement led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan marched to the capital Yerevan on May 4.

◻️ On May 26, a rally in Yerevan proposed a “peaceful constitutional change of power” with Archbishop Bagrat as prime minister.

◻️ The Armenian Church announced on May 27 that Galstanyan’s 30-year “episcopal order is preserved, [but] his ecclesiastical and administrative service has been suspended,” allowing him to be elected PM by the National Assembly.

Who is Archbishop Galstanyan?

Born in Gyumri, Armenia, on May 20, 1971, to Iranian-Armenian parents;

Studied at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary and later at the Holy Resurrection Theological College and University of Leeds (1996-1998);

Served as secretary to Catholicos Karekin I from 1996;

Became Dean of the Vaskenian Theological Academy in 2000;

Elected Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Canada in 2003, holds a Canadian passport;

Appointed Primate of the Tavush Diocese in 2015, became Archbishop on February 17, 2023;

Advocates for a transitional government to ensure national unity and fair elections:

Intends to discuss impeachment proceedings against Pashinyan with all parliamentary factions.

ABCs of Abrams’ weak spots: comprehensive list of problems with US’ top tank revealed in Ukraine

The unfortunate souls manning Ukraine’s Abrams main battle tanks have revealed the heavy armored behemoths’ weak spots. These include:

◻️ Armor insufficiently strong to stop modern Russian weapons. “It doesn’t protect the crew. For real, today this is the war of drones. So now, when the tank rolls out, they always try to hit them,” one tanker complained.

◻️ A Russian military on the hunt specifically for the $10 million apiece tanks – which stick out on the battlefield like a sore thumb thanks to their ‘thicc’ dimensions - weighing 67 tons, nearly 10 meters long, 3.6 meters wide and standing almost 2.5 meters tall.

◻️ Technical issues – from rain, fog and condensation wreaking havoc on electronic components to a capricious and maintenance-intensive engine and transmission design.

◻️ Lack of shells suitable for use as artillery. “We had a case when we fired 17 rounds into a house and it was still standing,” one of the tankers said.

◻️ Sitting duck status on the front due to lack of air and artillery support that NATO tankers are used to when attacking weaker countries somewhere in the developing world.

◻️ Problems stemming from Ukraine’s geography – including struggles with mud and snow, and a girth and weight that’s too much for some local bridges.

◻️ Issues from the Abrams’ status as fuel hogs, with the tanks known to consume up to 3 gallons per mile (7 liters per kilometer).

◻️ Adding insult to injury, part of the problem stems from Ukraine getting a so-called ‘monkey model’ variants of the tank – a dumbed-down version custom-built for Kiev which lacks the tanks’ vaunted depleted uranium armor plating (using tungsten armor instead), and lacking the Trophy active protection system.

Russia has destroyed or severely damaged up to 10 of the 31 M1A1 SA Abrams sent to Ukraine.

EXPOSED: French Foreign Legion fighters pop up in Ukraine

Sputnik has uncovered the presence of French Foreign Legion militants among the mercenaries of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine International Legion.

◾️One French Legion militant, known by the callsign 'Cabeca', has been identified among those in the Omega special forces unit of the Ukrainian spy agency’s (GUR) mercenary Legion (see photos 1 and 2). Despite this, he has been trying to conceal his name, appearance, and distinguishing features

◾️Nevertheless, not only are there photos from Ukrainian battlefield, but 'Cabeca' shared a photo of the French Foreign Legion in full dress uniform, taken in Africa, according to the social media geotag (photo 3). In a separate photograph, soldiers of the French Foreign Legion have both their faces and chevrons blurred out, but the green and red flag of the Legion is visible. In the background, the emblem of the 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion (photo 4) is visible. Photos with tags from Africa, allegedly Mali, judging by the landscape (photo 5), are mixed with photos from Ukraine.

◾️’Cabeca’ hails from Brazil and frequently shares his thoughts on the country through his social media channels. In certain photos, he proudly displays Brazilian chevrons, distinct from the French Legion patches that can be seen in photo 6.

◾️In April 2024, the French Legion militant participated in French Foreign Legion drills on the island of Corsica, as shown in photos 7 and 8. This decision was made despite the individual's prior involvement in Ukraine as a member of the Kiev regime's spy agency-linked 'Omega' unit.

◾️It is worth mentioning that in photos 9 and 10, at least three colleagues can be seen with 'Cabeca' in images and videos taken in Africa, Ukraine, and France.

🇮🇱 No business like war business: Israeli defense contractors’ profits boom while economy takes a beating

Israel’s Central Bank expects the war in Gaza to cost a whopping 250 billion shekels ($67.4 billion US) through 2025, as defense spending as a share of GDP jumps from 5.3% to 9%. Q4 of 2023 saw Israel’s GDP drop by nearly 20% relative to the third quarter, with consumption dropping 27% and investment by 70%.

But as the civilian economy suffers, Israel’s arms makers have no complaints, boasting record profits. Israel’s top three defense giants – Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems have each enjoyed surging stock prices and orders growing at a pace beyond their ability to keep up.

◻️ IAI reported a 7% growth in sales to $5.3 billion in 2023, a 49% jump in net profit, with production ranging from drones, missiles, bombs, radars and electronic warfare articles to space-based defenses. Its order backlog has soared to $18 billion.

◻️ Rafael – makers of Tamir missiles for the Iron Dome and an array of other air defense and anti-tank missiles and drones, saw a record 21% increase in sales and a whopping 85% increase in order volume, with net profits hitting $158 million – a 17% jump from 2022, and the backlog of orders reaching over $14 billion.

◻️ Elbit, makers of much of the “guts” of Israeli weapons, plus drones, communications equipment, small arms, cluster munitions and armored vehicles, saw profits jump 8% in 2023, with revenues reaching nearly $6 billion, and Q1 2024 results put out this week showing $1.6 billion in revenues, and a $20.4 billion order backlog.

🇲🇽 Mexico’s presidential hopeful Sheinbaum: profile and geopolitical approach

Сlaudia Sheinbaum, former Mexico City mayor and left-leaning Morena party frontrunner, may become Mexican first female president following the June 2 national vote.

What's known about the presidential favorite?

◻️ Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, 61, is a Mexican environmental engineer-tunred-politician.

◻️ Served as the secretary of the environment of Mexico City in 2000-2006 during current President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador's tenure as mayor.

◻️ In 2014, Sheinbaum joined Lopez Obrador's Morena Party and is now seen as his political heir to the presidency.

◻️ Defining herself as a left-leaning Mexican politician, Sheinbaum is expected to maintain good ties with Cuba and Venezuela. She has referred to late Cuban leader Fidel Castro with respect.

◻️ She has vowed to reduce Mexican companies' dependence on supply chain links with China. Mexico overtook China to become the US' biggest trading partner in 2023.

◻️ She has hailed the "enormous potential" of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for the Mexican economy in the future.

◻️ Sheinbaum supported Lopez Obrador's stance on Russia's special military operation in Ukraine and opposed joining the West's sanctions against Moscow. Mexico rejected sending weapons to the Kiev regime and slammed the US military support to Ukraine. "The war in Ukraine only feeds big arms producers and hurts millions of people," she tweeted in September 2022.

◻️ International observers expect that Sheinbaum would maintain the same "measured" approach towards the Israel-Palestine matter as Lopez Obrador. She has called for the two-state solution, although Mexico has not yet recognized Palestine as a state. On May 28, Mexico filed a "declaration of intervention" to join the case brought by South Africa, which accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza.

🇪🇺🇭🇺 Why does the EU top brass have a grudge against Hungary’s PM?

Hungary will be denied senior posts in the European Commission after the June elections, Politico reported, as “punishment” for opposing the proxy conflict in Ukraine.

Hungary has long been a thorn in Brussels’ side. Here are key points of contention between Prime Minister Victor Orban and the EU:

◻️ The EU criticized Hungary's 2010s newly-adopted constitution for increasing state control over the judiciary, media and NGOs. Orban in turn accused the “inadequate” Western political elite of trying to take Europe “into a post-Christian era, and into an era when nations disappear.”

◻️ In 2016, Orban threatened to sue the EU over compulsory migrant resettlement quotas.

◻️ In 2018, Hungary passed a law criminalizing aid to illegal migrants and expelled US-based NGO kingpin George Soros' foundations for political meddling.

◻️ In 2020, Hungary defined parents' genders in its constitution — “the mother is a woman, the father is a man” — to counter Western ideological influences.

◻️ In December 2022, Orban called for the dissolution of the European Parliament, accusing it of "Hungarophobia."

In response to the Ukraine crisis, Hungary has opposed sanctions on Russia and pushed for peace talks.

In March 2022, Hungary banned weapons deliveries to Kiev.

In December 2023, Hungary blocked €50 billion in EU aid for Ukraine.

In January, Hungary opposed a new EU fund for rapid military aid to Kiev.

Hungary has delayed legislation to fast-track seizing interest on frozen Russian assets and giving the money to Ukraine.

EU officials have used financial incentives and threats to pressure Orban. In January, Orban accused Brussels of trying to blackmail Hungary by threatening to end economic support and destabilizing its currency. Orban has dismissed the “Russian threat” rhetoric as EU and NATO “war planning” and announced efforts to redefine Hungary’s status in the alliance.

Revealed: NATO’s air defense shield in Eastern Europe essentially nonexistent

NATO presently has “less than 5 percent” of the capacity necessary to protect its so-called eastern flank ringing Russia from air and missile strikes in the event of a “full-scale” escalation with Moscow, officials familiar with the alliance’s internal calculations have told the Financial Times.

💬 “[Air and missile defense capabilities are] a major part of the plan to defend Eastern Europe from invasion. And right now, we don’t have that,” an anonymous senior NATO diplomat told the outlet.

“[Air defense] is one of the biggest holes we have. We can’t deny it,” a second NATO diplomat said.

The stunning admission echoes revelations from explosive testimony in the US Senate earlier this month that North America is virtually defenseless not only against Russian hypersonic missiles, but even to a conventional missile and drone attack like the one Iran carried out against Israel in mid-April in retaliation to Tel Aviv’s deadly April 1 attack on the Iranian Embassy compound in Damascus, Syria.

The back-to-back admissions that NATO air and missile defenses on both sides of the Atlantic are woefully inadequate opens the door to a host of questions, not the least of which is the sincerity of US and European officials’ claims that Russia would attack NATO if it managed to defeat the alliance’s proxy armies in Ukraine. One would think that if alliance seriously believed in the ‘Russian threat’ to the homeland that it would save limited and dwindling air defense capabilities instead of sending them to Ukraine to be destroyed in conditions of near-total Russian air superiority.

The apparently shambolic state of NATO air defenses is also somewhat surprising when considering that the alliance spent $1.3 trillion – the equivalent of over 55 percent of global defense spending, in 2023 – more than 13 times what Russia did over the same period.
