Iraq and Jordan have withdrawn their signatures under the communiqué of the conference on Ukraine, according to the list of countries at the bottom of the document on the website of the Swiss Federal Council.

Initially, these countries were shown at the presentation as having signed the joint declaration. Later, the list was updated, excluding Iraq and Jordan. The reasons for the withdrawal of signatures were not specified.

The Holy See, as the Vatican Press Service told Sputnik, did not sign the document because of its observer status.

Record number of ‘double haters’ loathe both US major party presidential candidates

Lawmakers in the US consistently stress the importance of exporting American-style freedom and democracy around the globe, but recent evidence suggests the American system of governance has seen better days.

“Biden, Trump are least-liked pair of major party presidential candidates in at least 3 decades,” declared a report by the Pew Research Center polling firm. “With the 2024 US presidential election about five months away, a quarter of Americans hold unfavorable views of both major party candidates – President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump… That is the highest share expressing negative views of both candidates in surveys conducted at about this point in the election cycle by the Center and other organizations dating back to the 1988 election.”

Online media outlet Axios identified a number of groups making up the growing number of Americans who reject both major candidates. Perhaps the largest group of “double haters” are pro-Palestinian voters, including Arab-Americans and young people who oppose Biden’s support for Israel’s deadly military operation in Gaza. Trump also remains unpalatable for this segment of the population given the former president’s steadfast pro-Israel stance and threats to deport pro-Palestine campus demonstrators studying in America on student visas.

“Activists are increasingly rejecting the ‘lesser of two evils’ paradigm that historically has benefited Democrats, raising the risk that they'll boycott the election or vote third party,” Axios reported. Among prominent third-party US candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has also expressed a pro-Zionist stance, but Green Party candidate Jill Stein has distinguished herself as a supporter of the Palestinian cause. The activist and physician was arrested at a pro-Palestine demonstration in St. Louis in April.

Libertarian Party candidate Chase Oliver has also pledged to “end the genocide” against Palestinians if elected president. A number of smaller left-wing formations such as the Party for Socialism and Liberation also oppose US backing of Israel, but third party candidates typically struggle for influence and recognition in the United States’ pay-to-play political system.

Houthis say they have attacked US destroyer and 2 ships in Red and Arabian seas

Yemen's Ansar Allah rebel movement, also known as the Houthis, said that it had attacked a US destroyer and two commercial vessels in the Red and Arabian Seas.

"The missile unit and naval forces of our Yemeni armed forces carried out two military operations in the Red Sea," Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said.

The spokesman said that the Houthis fired missiles at a US destroyer and the Captain Paris vessel in the Red Sea. He also added that the movement attacked with drones the Happy Condor vessel in the Arabian Sea.

The Houthis have been launching attacks on commercial and military vessels in the region for months in response to Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip. The attacks prompted the US to form a multinational coalition to protect shipping in the area, as well as to strike Houthi targets on the ground.

Palestine's membership in UN will help launch negotiations with Israel

Russia is convinced that Palestine's membership in the United Nations will help launch equal negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik.

"We are convinced that Palestine's membership in the UN would help launch an equal negotiation process between Palestinians and Israelis on a set of final status issues, the outcome of which would be the creation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with its capital in East Jerusalem, coexisting in peace and security with Israel in accordance with approved international legal decisions," Nebenzia said.

The Russian diplomat recalled that the US had earlier vetoed a resolution recommending that the General Assembly admit Palestine to the UN, threatening to do so again if the issue was reconsidered.

"The Americans believe that the issues of recognizing Palestine and its admission to the UN should be resolved in direct negotiations with Israel. At the same time, the US itself "torpedoed" them, imposing unilateral approaches, bypassing the universally recognized international legal basis with the internationally approved formula of "two states"," Nebenzia said.

Nevertheless, the US position "finds less and less understanding in the world, especially against the backdrop of the bloody events in Gaza," he said.

US Treasury Secretary claims seizing profits from Russian assets is not ‘theft’

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that there are legal grounds for seizing income from frozen Russian assets in favor of Ukraine and it is not a "theft."

"There is no sense at all in which it's theft … So there's no legal issue here. And our allies, our partners, the G7 will provide Ukraine a $50 billion loan, which will be repaid over time from these proceeds," Yellen said in an interview with the ABC News broadcaster.

Yellen is also convinced that there is a "battle of wills" between the West and Russia regarding these funds. According to her, Russia believes that the Western coalition "will crumble in the sense we won't go on providing Ukraine with the resources that they need to fight this war."

"And this is a way of showing that we have the capacity and the will to do so," the treasury secretary concluded.

Last week, G7 countries agreed on a loan structure to provide at least $50 billion to Ukraine in loans, which will be funded by revenue generated by the interest on Russia’s frozen assets, but they will not confiscate the principal amount of those funds.

Russia has maintained that any attempts to confiscate its assets amount to theft and a violation of international law.

Israeli insiders slam ‘arrogance,’ ‘bulls**t’ of Netanyahu’s leadership

As the nation of Israel suffers a rapid decline in its global standing, prominent Israelis are blaming the country’s longtime leader for its political, diplomatic and economic deterioration, according to the media reports.

I think the policy of managing the conflict [with the Palestinians] has collapsed before our eyes,” said Israel’s former National Security Council head Eyal Hulata. The ex-official was one of a number of prominent former Israeli government figures who spoke on the record to the online outlet The Daily Beast about the shortcomings of Netanyahu’s leadership and how they contributed to Israel’s massive security lapse amid Hamas’ unprecedented October 7 attack.

Above all the ex public servants alleged Netanyahu’s personal political calculations informed a strategy more geared towards ensuring his own self-preservation than achieving security.

“The more he had coalition partners who were pro-settlement, and against a Palestinian state, the more he had to take that into consideration politically and even personally,” Uzi Arad, a veteran of Israel’s state security service, told the newspaper, referring to hardline members of the prime minister’s governing cabinet.

There is a question to what extent the intelligence people were politicized in their assessment because it was comforting,” he added, saying the prime minister constructed “a reassuring narrative” that the conflict with Palestinians was under control out of “political expediency.”

“The most significant failure was arrogance and the inability to absorb the idea that the Arabs can be smart enough to do what we would have done under similar circumstances,” said former PM Ehud Olmert to the The Daily Beast, while discussing the October 7 attack. “We thought we are the start-up nation, we are sophisticated, we are the smart guys. The Arabs, these bunch of primitives, turned out they were smart.”

Russia will not allow restoration of mechanism for reprimanding North Korea

Russia will not allow the restoration of a mechanism for imposing restrictions against North Korea in the UN Security Council, similar to the group of experts of the sanctions committee, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik.

"Today, if our Western colleagues want to restore the same or a similar mechanism for reprimanding Pyongyang in the Council, we will not allow this. And outside the Council, any attempts to follow this path are doomed to failure, since a corresponding mandate from the Security Council is needed to consider sanctions restrictions," Nebenzia said.

On March 28, Russia blocked a US draft resolution in the UN Security Council to extend for one year the work of the UNSC's Committee 1718 on sanctions against North Korea. Its mandate expired on April 30. On May 1, 50 UN members, including the US, Japan, and South Korea, said in a joint statement they were considering alternatives to ensure continued "objective and independent" monitoring of sanctions on North Korea after the expert panel's dissolution.

The termination of the mandate caused an outrage among Western members of the UN Security Council because they used this mechanism "to denigrate the leadership of North Korea," stated Nebenzia.

Meanwhile, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said in an interview with Russian newspaper Izvestia that it is necessary to resume cooperation with North Korea, as the country has an ambitious nuclear program.

"I believe that we need to resume cooperation with the DPRK … for example, in the area of nuclear safety. The country has a very ambitious nuclear program, including fuel production, uranium processing, regeneration, and nuclear reactors. And I am not talking about nuclear weapons, but about a huge number of nuclear facilities, the only ones in the world that are not monitored," Grossi said.

Political posturing, wishful thinking, and no results from Zelensky's pointless "peace conference" - Bundestag MP

Volodymyr Zelensky’s Swiss-hosted “peace conference” on Ukraine was bound to be pointless without Russia’s participation, Steffen Kotre, Bundestag MP for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, told Russian media.

“It was to be expected that the conference would not bring any results, since Russia did not take part in it. The United States and its allies once again offered Ukraine pledges of support, and promised to supply it with weapons. Therefore, Zelensky spouted assurances that Russia can be defeated. This is nothing but wishful thinking, and is far from reality. In three weeks, everyone will have forgotten about this conference,” said Kotre.

The German politician urged a ceasefire, insisted that the "rights of [Russian speaking] minorities must be respected,” and underscored that “Ukraine cannot become a member of NATO if Russia’s security interests are to be taken into account.”

“Territorial issues must be resolved jointly by the conflicting parties,” Kotre emphasized. The conference tailored to discuss Zelensky's so-called 10-point "peace plan" on June 15 and 16 fell short of its much-touted goals.

Major leaders such as US President Joe Biden, China's President Xi Jingping, as well as the leaders of Brazil, South Africa, and India opted to give the summit a miss.

Furthermore, BRICS countries along with several other states did not sign a joint declaration on the results of the talks on Sunday.

Russia dismissed the conference, to which it was not invited, as “meaningless” and “not result-oriented.”

New batch of Su-34 fighter-bombers delivered to the Russian Army

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has delivered a fresh batch of Su-34 frontline bombers to the Russian Defense Ministry under a state defense contract. After a series of factory tests, the aircraft were sent to the troops, the state corporation’s press service said on Monday.

"Rostec's aviation enterprises continue regular deliveries of military aircraft under this year's production program. Another batch of Su-34s has been delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces. These bombers are currently in great demand in the air defense sector. The aircraft's capabilities allow pilots to effectively perform tasks in any theater of military operations using unguided and guided weapons," the press service quoted Rostec First Deputy Director General Vladimir Artyakov as saying.

The Su-34 fighter-bomber is designed to destroy ground and air targets, as well as infrastructure protected by air defenses and located at a considerable distance from the home airfield. The aircraft can operate in the face of enemy fire and electronic countermeasures, day and night, in all weather conditions.

‘Disappointing’ results of Zelensky’s peace conference mirror ‘Russia’s continuing international economic power and influence’ - Western media

As the two-day Swiss-hosted summit on Ukraine wrapped up on Sunday, Western media outlets could not help but admit that the gathering had “hit a wall.” The summit was a “struggle” and failed to win over support from the Global South, they conceded.

Britain’s The Telegraph acknowledged the “disappointing end” to the Ukraine summit in its headline story, and went on to dub the peace declaration “watered-down.”

The Guardian highlighted the fact that key global powers like Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates all failed to sign the summit’s communique.

These key refusals reflected “Russia’s continuing international economic power and influence,” the Financial Times begrudgingly admitted.

Bern-based Swissinfo of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation referred to the summit as having been a “struggle,” and noted that it ended with an “unresolved declaration.”

Politico whimsically remarked that “Russia’s ghost loomed over the summit,” after Russian President Vladimir Putin laid out conditions for an end to the Ukraine conflict the day before the gathering started.

It “reinforced the reality that the Kremlin eventually will have to be dealt with,” Politico summed up.
