What should you know about the North Korean-Russian border?
▪️ Russia and North Korea have a common border. It is located in the Russian Far East near the large port city of Vladivostok on the Sea of Japan and the province of Hamgyong-Pukto and the city of Rason, which has the special status of "city of direct subordination".
▪️ Russia's border with North Korea is the shortest section of the state border with other countries. Its total length is only 39.8 km.
▪️ The border is mainly along the waterway: 22.1 kilometers - along the Sea of Japan and 17.3 kilometers - along the Tumannaya River.
▪️ Since the proclamation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948, Russia has been actively developing rail communications with the country.
▪️ In 1959, a Friendship Railroad Bridge was built over this river. It is still in use for commercial and passenger traffic.
▪️ In 1990, the USSR and the DPRK established the state boundary line along the channel of the Tumanaya River. The USSR received Noktundo Island with a total area of 32 square kilometers, which was inherited by Russia.

Military-political alliance between Russia and N Korea challenges US hegemony in Northeast Asia
The new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and North Korea, signed today by Putin and Kim Jong Un, heralds a paradigm shift in Northeast Asia, says Artyom Lukin, a professor of international politics at the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok.
The clause stipulating mutual assistance in case of aggression against the treaty’s signatories essentially means that Russia and North Korea established a military-political alliance, Lukin explains.
This, he notes, is a significant development since until now, only the United States maintained comprehensive military-political alliances in the region with Japan and South Korea.
According to Lukin, this new alliance effectively amounts to issuing a “direct challenge to the United States’ military-political hegemony” in the “heart of the Asia-Pacific region."

Dr. Teo also argues that Vladimir Putin’s proposal to review the UN sanctions imposed on North Korea appears “understandable” in light of the new treaty between Russia and DPRK.
Artyom Lukin, professor of international politics at the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, however, suggests that, while Russia may not necessarily stop formally adhering by the UNSC sanctions imposed on North Korea, there may be ways to ensure that these sanctions do not hamper the cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

The International Naval Salon "Fleet-2024" showcasing modern Russian ships, submarines and anti-submarine warfare equipment opened on June 19 in the northern Russian city of Kronstadt.
The opening ceremony began with the hoisting of the Russian tricolor and St. Andrew's flag, the official symbol of the Russian Navy, by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseev. The Vityazi aerobatic team on Russian Su-35 fighters demonstrated their impressive skills.
Military equipment at the exhibition includes:
🔸 Two large submarines of projects 636.3 and 677 of the Admiralty Shipyards, corvette of project 20380, small missile ships of projects 21631 Buyan-M and 22800 Karakurt;
🔸 Naval Minesweeper Project 12700 and Small Amphibious Hovercraft Project 12322;
🔸 Almaz-Antey's upgraded Komar 3M47-03E turret system. It is capable of defeating both air and sea drones due to the installed Igla-S and Ataka missiles;
🔸 Series of unmanned boats, including the Vizir, Arkan, BAK-1000 and the MT-300 autonomous unmanned vehicle, will be demonstrated to foreign customers for the first time;
🔸 Hydrographic unmanned boat "Vizir-2M" with a gyrostabilized high-sensitivity platform is also among the brand new products.
