Ukraine uses prohibited toxic substances against Russian military – Russian soldier

The Ukrainian military used banned toxic substances, presumably phosgene, against Russian troops in the Kherson direction, a Russian intelligence officer from the Dnepr group of troops told Sputnik.

Phosgene was actively used as a chemical compound warfare agent during World War I and has a suffocating effect.

"Phosgene poison, in my opinion, if I am not mistaken now. The people do not know what to do with it, to be honest. Such a nasty thing. I have now graduated from tactical medicine at the military academy, and there was just a case at the front line with this gas. That is, a very sad experience," the officer said.

Why did the new Sahel bloc emerge & why does it pose challenges to the West?

Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso announced the formation of the Confederation of Sahel States, which will use the acronym AES, during a trilateral summit in Niamey last weekend.

What does the new alliance spell for the Sahel region?

◻️ The confederation was formed on the basis of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a mutual defense pact established in September 2023 in response to the threat of a likely military intervention in Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after the military takeover in the Sahel nation.

◻️ Following a string of protests last year, France’s former colonies - Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso - insisted on French and US troops pulling out after failing to thwart a terror threat in the Sahel region.

◻️ In March, the trio announced the start of a joint anti-jihadist effort. "We are convinced that with the combined efforts of our three countries, we will succeed in creating the conditions for shared security," Gen. Moussa Salaou Barmou, Niger's chief of staff of the armed forces, stated at the meeting.

◻️ The AES treaty marked the official separation of the three Sahel nations from the Western-backed ECOWAS.

◻️ The AES boasts a wealth of natural resources, such as gold, uranium, oil, and land. Mali ranks as the fourth-largest gold producer in Africa, with 800 tons of gold deposits. Niger holds the noscript of the world's seventh-biggest producer of uranium, extracting 2,020 metric tons per year as of 2022. Burkina Faso's arable land occupies 22.3% of its total area as of 2021. The nation is also rich in gold, copper, phosphate, and zinc.

◻️ The confederation has a population of approximately 72 million.

◻️ Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are located within the Sahel corridor, which is a land area between the Red Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This corridor serves as a potential transport route across Africa and offers a shorter alternative to sea lanes.
