Why did the new Sahel bloc emerge & why does it pose challenges to the West?
Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso announced the formation of the Confederation of Sahel States, which will use the acronym AES, during a trilateral summit in Niamey last weekend.
What does the new alliance spell for the Sahel region?
◻️ The confederation was formed on the basis of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a mutual defense pact established in September 2023 in response to the threat of a likely military intervention in Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after the military takeover in the Sahel nation.
◻️ Following a string of protests last year, France’s former colonies - Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso - insisted on French and US troops pulling out after failing to thwart a terror threat in the Sahel region.
◻️ In March, the trio announced the start of a joint anti-jihadist effort. "We are convinced that with the combined efforts of our three countries, we will succeed in creating the conditions for shared security," Gen. Moussa Salaou Barmou, Niger's chief of staff of the armed forces, stated at the meeting.
◻️ The AES treaty marked the official separation of the three Sahel nations from the Western-backed ECOWAS.
◻️ The AES boasts a wealth of natural resources, such as gold, uranium, oil, and land. Mali ranks as the fourth-largest gold producer in Africa, with 800 tons of gold deposits. Niger holds the noscript of the world's seventh-biggest producer of uranium, extracting 2,020 metric tons per year as of 2022. Burkina Faso's arable land occupies 22.3% of its total area as of 2021. The nation is also rich in gold, copper, phosphate, and zinc.
◻️ The confederation has a population of approximately 72 million.
◻️ Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are located within the Sahel corridor, which is a land area between the Red Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This corridor serves as a potential transport route across Africa and offers a shorter alternative to sea lanes.

Macron is under pressure over his NATO Summit trip
French President adherents fear that the left might take advantage of the president's absence to accelerate discussions and assert their position to the government. According to information from Le Figaro, several senior government officials and allies of the President have expressed their concerns to the Elysee about the President's absence for 48 hours, especially as negotiations are ongoing to form the next government.
When questioned by Le Figaro, Emmanuel Macron's entourage initially downplayed the possibility of canceling the trip: "That's not the direction it's heading. He is not in the mindset of not going." However, after a while, they became more resolute: "The President will indeed attend the NATO summit."

Nothing sacred: Ukrainian regime cashes in on own strike on children's hospital in Kiev
The Kiev regime and its Western allies groundlessly accused Russia of striking the Ohmatdet Children's Hospital ahead of the jubilee NATO summit.
A building on the grounds of the Okhmatdet hospital was hit by a surface-to-air missile fired from the Western-made NASAMS air defense system during a Russian attack on military targets in Kiev, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
◻️ Photographs and videos taken in Kiev confirm that the hospital site was hit by a Ukrainian SAM, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The ministry linked the Kiev regime's accusations to the NATO summit, which will discuss Ukraine's potential membership among other issues.
◻️ The US is silent on the incident, hoping to use the controversy for approving new arms deliveries to Kiev, according to Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov.
◻️ In March 2022 Ukraine and its Western allies used the "Bucha massacre" hoax to justify Kiev's decision to tear up a draft Russo-Ukrainian peace deal struck in Istanbul in March 2022. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed in December 2023 that no list of victims in Bucha has ever been published, and international organizations show no interest in investigating the matter.
◻️ Kiev's claims that Mariupol Maternity Hospital №3 was hit by a Russian airstrike in March 2022 also turned out to be a hoax, with local residents confirming the "bombing" never took place. Nonetheless, the fake incident was featured in a documentary that won an Oscar in March 2024.
◻️ Kiev and the Western media routinely ignore evidence of Ukraine's attacks on civilian areas — including the latest cluster munitions strike on a Sevastopol beach, the killings of Russian POWs by Ukrainian nationalists and foreign mercenaries and the Kiev regime's torture chambers.

Fact-checking US claim that Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has ‘fled’ Crimea
White House NSC spokesman John Kirby has claimed that US missiles used by Ukraine have effectively destroyed Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and forced it to ‘flee’ Sevastopol.
“Ukraine has put US-provided ATACMS… to good use in Crimea,” Kirby said in a briefing on Monday. “They sunk the last cruise-missile capable warship in the port of Sevastopol and the Russian Black Sea Fleet has now fled Crimea in response.”
Kirby’s remarks were an admission that Washington is giving Kiev the weapons it uses for terror strikes inside Russia — including the deadly June 23 ATACMS attack on a beach in Sevastopol. As for the claim that Ukraine has “sunk” the Black Sea Fleet’s entire line-up of cruise missile-armed ships, that’s just a bare-faced lie.
◻️ A five-second internet search shows that the Black Sea Fleet’s cruise-missile ship inventory includes five Krivak and Admiral Grigorovich-class guided missile frigates, seven Kalibr cruise-capable Kilo subs, more than half-a-dozen Dergach, Buyan-M and Karakurt missile corvettes and dozens of smaller vessels, some armed with long-range anti-ship missiles.
◻️ Russia has shuttled some of its larger ships out of Sevastopol to other ports in light of the Ukrainian drone threat, but the idea that the Black Sea Fleet has “fled” its home port is another easily-debunked lie told by Kirby. On July 4, local authorities announced night-time live-fire training by fleet units in the Sevastopol area. Similar drills took place in the piers and bays of Sevastopol on June 12 and 15, showing that the Black Sea Fleet hasn’t gone anywhere.
◻️ Kirby has made a name for himself for tripping over his own lies. In February, he falsely claimed that Baghdad was warned ahead of a series of US airstrikes in Iraq. In March, he and other officials were caught lying when they claimed that the US warned Russia ahead of an attack on a Moscow concert hall. Perhaps most infamously of all, in August 2021 — just hours before the collapse of the US puppet regime in Afghanistan — Kirby assured media that the situation in Kabul was stable.
