Two inches from the Civil War: What US pundits say about Trump's assassination attempt

CBS anchor Margaret Brennan rushed to lambast former President Trump, in the wake of Saturday's assassination attempt, for failing to "lower the temperature" of political tensions after the shooting.

US pundits on both sides of the political spectrum have warned of violence spiraling out of control and leading to a civil war.

⚡️ Brennan claimed Trump did not signal his supporters not to retaliate. "This kind of event can inspire violence, it can inspire retaliation," Brennan said.

⚡️ "The shooter missed sparking a bloody civil war by two inches," writes the Washington Examiner, citing deep political divisions already simmering in the US. 

⚡️ "Donald Trump leaves the stage bleeding, as a violent nation looks set to explode," echoes The Toronto Star.

⚡️ "The darkness drops again," writes the Houston Chronicle. "We imagine ourselves as a beacon of freedom and prosperity, but we seem to be under a kind of siege."

⚡️ "We have to recognize that we have all been touched by toxic politics — regardless of our beliefs or where we fall on an ideological spectrum," the Washington Post reports, warning against growing political violence.

⚡️ Former Obama official Samantha Vinograd told CBS the threat of "retaliatory violence" is real, and quoted counterterrorism and homeland security officials as saying that the shooting could be used by conservatives as a "rallying cry" to attack Biden campaign figures.

⚡️ "For months, politicians, the press, and pundits have escalated reckless rhetoric in this campaign on both sides," writes US legal expert Jonathan Turley, singling out the liberal press that claimed Trump would "kill democracy", unleash "death squads", and "destroy the world."

⚡️ Most recently, Team Biden and Democrats linked Trump to the controversial conservative Project 2025, calling it a "dangerous", "diabolical", and an "authoritarian playbook" for his second term.

The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, is agreeable to a ceasefire and the surrender of Ukrainian troops - he does not believe in Kiev's victory, said Verkhovna Rada Maryana Bezuglaya, People's Deputy of Ukraine. She added that this position of Syrksy, and his entourage, was confirmed to her by "a number of sources."

"Unsecured rooftop 150 yards away. Multiple witnesses said they were screaming at the Secret Service and cops for 3-4 minutes, as they watched the guy with the rifle crawl to the spot and line up his shot. Earlier, a man at the rally told a reporter that the police and Secret Service had ignored warnings about the attacker.

US Secret Service were suspiciously slow in protecting Trump – psyop veteran

"The Secret Service were remarkably - if not suspiciously - slow in their protecting of [former] President [Trump], similar to how they were slow in protecting President John F Kennedy when he was shot in Texas," former US Army psychological warfare officer and State Department counterterrorism analyst Scott Bennett told Sputnik.

"Most suspicious was that in the case of Trump, the Secret Service did not respond to reports of a shooter crawling with a gun on the roof nearby as eye witnesses have reported," the pundit continued.

A flurry of theories, ranging from Trump staging his assassination attempt, to President Biden ordering the hit on a political rival, has popped up following the incident. Republicans and Democrats are pointing the finger at each other.

"In the process of this assassination attempt, the shooter has unified, inspired and emboldened the Republican conservatives, and the moderate (patriot) voting bloc in America, to stand with Trump; and villainized and demonized all those politicians, media, and other groups that dislike or vilify him," the expert noted.

As Trump emerges a "superhero" in the eyes of his base, one may expect the Republican's victory in November, Bennett forecasted. He does not rule out civil war-like political clashes between the Democrats and the GOP on the eve of the election.
